Elwulf finished chopping the last log for the day when he heard the phone from inside. He looked at his watch and was shocked. He had been cutting wood for the entire day and lost track of time. The SMJHL draft would have been finishing up. He wondered if that was a team on the phone, saying they had drafted him. He hoped so and put his stuff away before entering the house.
As he came inside his parents ran over and gave him a great big hug. "You did it. You got drafted." His parents were nearly in tears. Their kiddo was growing up. All their sacrifices were paying off. "Who was it? Who drafted me?" Elwulf couldn't believe that he had even been drafted, fully expecting to have to go tryout for teams to even give him a shot. His father stood up straight. "St. Louis. You are going to be a Scarecrow." Elwulf could tell the pride in his father's voice was genuine. St. Louis was a long way from home, but at least it wasn't on the other side of the country. He ran upstairs and started packing his bags when his cellphone started blowing up. All his friends and family had seen the draft and were so excited for him. After all, it wasn't every day that a small town kid got to live his dream. His parents helped him pack the car and headed off to the Jetport. Training camp was to start this week and he didn't want to be late. He was already looking into hotels for his first stay. Nerves started kicking in about moving yo a nee city. St. Louis was huge compared to just about everything in Maine (twice as many people just in the city versus the entire state of Maine). It was going to be a huge change. He waved goodbye as he went through the gate and got on the plane. Just a few hours left. Elwulf couldn't rest while on the plane. Everything was just too exciting. As the plane landed and he grabbed his bags everything began to sink in. This was it, he was over a thousand miles from home. There was no turning back. A kid walked by westing a Scarecrow's jersey. Elwulf smiled. One day, his name would be on the back of that kid's jersey. (403 Words)
