ESS: Mikael Jakobsen Report [Double Media Week]

[ESS] Elite Scouting Services
Mikael Jakobsen

Hello everyone! Quite some time ago, myself and a group of people got together to make an article scouting services on the simulation hockey league to encourage activity and our bank accounts. The small price was charged for people wanting a scouting report done for them (I believe it was 500k if they wanted one done) and then the total pot for what the articles gathered would be split amongst those that helped pitch in for the Elite Scouting Services. Looking back on these days, I’m fond of the hockey simulation memories that I shared with the bunch of these members and we really did something cool while largely benefitting us and the SHL community. We made a lot of money, bonded and had a lot of fun doing it. To look back and see that we wrote over 25,000 words (and there may have been more articles) is pretty cool to see. Unfortunately, I’ve tried clicking the links to the articles and I’ve been unable to go to them which is kind of disheartening but it is what it is. I doubt it’s going to come back in much of a form, but for my first article with my newest player, I decided we’re going to bring it back for the sake of personal celebration. With that being said, put on your seatbelt and let’s take a rocket ship adventure down nostalgia memory lane! Apologies, as it likely won’t be as good as the ones so long ago.

Player Information
Name: Mikael Jakobsen
Position: Left wing
Handedness:  Right
Jersey Number: 83
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 206
Birth Place: Stockholm, Sweden

Mikael Jakobsen was born on September 20, 2004 in the beautiful, cobble streeted city of Stockholm, Sweden. He is the son of former Simulation Hockey League sniper, superstar and hall of famer, Magnus Jakobsen and Julia Jakobsen, a professional, silver medalist figure skater for Team Sweden. Unlike his father, Magnus, who grew up in some form of poverty and hardship in his motherland Sweden, Mikael lived a very different lifestyle. Being the son of not only one, but two professional, popular Swedish athletes comes with it’s perks and when growing up, the younger Jakobsen hadn’t any issues when it came to wealth. Jakobsen was one of three children. He had an older sister and an older brother - both of which also followed in their fathers footsteps to become hockey players. Their sister currently plays in the Swedish Elite Women’s Hockey League, and their brother played over in the GOMHL, prior to it folding some years ago (he now plays in the Swedish Men’s League). Growing up together, the siblings had the absolute perfect recipe for success and they were sure to take advantage of every single moment of it.

When the Jakobsen children were young, they were fortunate to only be a year apart in age each. This allowed the children the opportunity to grow with one another, gain relationships with one another and most importantly as children, play with one another. This allowed their relationships to grow very strong and the siblings were very close. When they were in school, they still decided to hang out with one another and their peers despite the minor age difference. They’d sit on the bus together, eat lunch together, play together and eventually help one another study. The best part about the age gap for them was probably that they got to alternate playing with one another in team sports - more importantly, hockey. The middle child, their brother Hans, was probably the most fortunate as he got to play with his sister one year and his younger brother the next. It kept switching and switching all the way until each graduated in the game to higher levels where they could no longer play together. When this day came, it was a little hard for them but looking back, they had tons of amazing memories. Having parents that played in the game of hockey, or in some version of skating, really contributed to their successes and passions for the game.

During their childhoods, the kids rarely missed a home game. It didn’t matter if they were in school or had something minor to do, the only time they’d miss one of their fathers games was when it came to their own hockey games or practices. When their father Magnus Jakobsen played for the Hamilton Steelhawks, there were no bigger, louder fans on the stage than his own children and right there beside his two siblings, the littlest at the time stood loud and proud (yes, Mikael). During every intermission, the kids would stand near the hallways and as the team came roaring through, they’d each stick out their arms for a fist bump as the players went by. With every fist bump, fueled the kids passion and motivation for the game. This is where they wanted to end up. These are the things they want to be doing when they’re older. As each game went on, the kids got more and more involved in the game, travelling with their parents everywhere for the Simulation Hockey League.

When the off-season would roll around, the Jakobsen's team would always take a short break and go somewhere fun. One year they went to Hawaii and did a bunch of adventures. The following year they were in Mexico eating a lifetime supply worth of tacos and doing some deep sea fishing. The year after that, eating the finest spaghetti in Italy. So many beaches, so much adventuring, so much fun and experience for the young players. So many lessons for them growing up that would help shape them into the being they were meant to become. One of Mikael’s fondest memories though was when he was able to go to the Olympics and watch his father play for Team Sweden while the tournament was being held in Canada. Outside of the hockey portion, they had so much fun travelling from coast to coast - seeing the Niagara falls, visiting the mountains and exploring Vancouver.. But when it came to hockey, there was nothing crazier than watching his dad play for Team Sweden. What an honour it was! What a dream! Despite not winning gold, his kids were so proud of watching their father win a silver medal with team Sweden.

Once the fun cooled down in the off-season, the kids and their parents would continue their hard work into getting in shape and sharpening their skills. For the kids, this might have involved training with their parents, training with themselves or going to their private camps together. Mikael tried really hard to be the best and always wanted to beat his dad when it came to how good he once was. As he continued to age, he would always joke with his dad that he slowed down too quickly due to scandals and for this reason he would be the better Jakobsen. Through his hockey years, he quickly showed that he had his family's hockey talent and bloodline. He was an explosive offensive threat that was able to take the puck from one end of the ice all the way down to the other. He was also able to play a little bit of a defensive game but the biggest surprise was how he was able to score and lay people on their asses at the same time. He was the complete package and once people found out about him and watched his game, they knew he was destined for some form of fame. How much? Time would tell.

As he progresses through his career, all eyes are on him. He’s officially declared himself eligible for the SMJHL and SHL, so the clock is now ticking and the people are watching to see what he can become. With that being said, let’s take a look at his hockey days before he makes the big jump to the big times.

Youth Career Review
Age:15
Team: Stockholm Stags
Swedish Elite Junior League

Entering his first year of elite junior level in the Swedish systems, fans and all those who were part of the Swedish hockey world had their expectations on Mikael Jakobsen. Since a young age, the spotlight has been on him because of his brother. At hockey games that they went to with their father, they’d be showing him on the screen as the next Jakobsen to do what his father was doing for Sweden. As he aged and his talent grew, the spotlight became more and more. During his first year of true professional hockey in Sweden, he did not disappoint either. While it took him 3 games to register his first goal and point, after that, the rest was cake on a kids plate. The team huddled around their new star youngster and took them under their wings (or antlers in this case?). The team ran on to a 39-13-4 finish through the 56 game season and he managed to put up 21 goals, 28 assists for 49 points as he led all rookie players in scoring. The team lost out in the Conference finals of the playoffs in 6 games to Malmo but he managed to collect some hardware for rookie of the year.

Age:16
Team: Stockholm Stags
Swedish Elite Junior League

His sophomore season came quickly after the off-season training with his family and it went exactly how people thought it was going to go. You could notice in the stands as the season went on that more scouts were showing up from games from all over the world. There were scouts from the North American juniors leagues, VHL, SHL and even the NHL/KHL systems! The word spread of how strong this rookies campaign was at 15 years of age and really wanted to come check out his sophomore performance to see if he was going to continue it. Not only did he continue it, but he elevated his game to a whole new level and clearly was working on sharpening his strength and skills in the off-season. Despite missing one game due to a minor injury, he still put up some amazing numbers. Through 55 games on the year, he put up 32 goals, 42 Assists for a total of 74 points to place 3rd in the league for scoring. The team, now even more developed because of their sophomore, made it all the way to the finals. Despite the loss, tons was learned on the season for Mikael and the stags.

STATS
55 GP, 32 Goals, 42 Assists, 74 Points, 21 +/-, 77 Hits, 9 SB

Age:17
Team: Stockholm Vipers
Swedish Elite League

After putting up two insane seasons in the Swedish Elite Junior League, he definitely got his name out there. He was drafted second overall to the Stockholm Vipers and while they obviously weren’t the strongest team at the moment, he was excited to go to his hometown team and even more excited to be progressing in his career. This was the season where he really felt like all his hard work was paying off. He improved in his rookie season as a junior, then got even better in his sophomore season. So much so that it landed him second overall in the SEL’s draft and was snubbed in most scout’s opinions for first overall. Coming into this league with the Vipers, I think 99% of people were expecting his play to be good. At the start of the year,  for the 72 game season, 9% had him in at 0-15 points, 16% had him at 15-30 points, 19% had him between 30-50, 27% had him between 50-70, and the final 29% had him at 71 or higher. It’s safe to say that a majority of people thought he was going to have a strong year. Turns out the ones that voted higher were either the true fans that were at the game and had done their research (or got lucky) but damn did he ever have a season to get his name on the map. Through the 72 games, he scored 43 goals, collected 56 assists and totalled up to 99 points on the season. The team went all the ways to the finals and ended up capturing Jakobsen’s first major championship in his career and set him up to walk into the SMHJL/SHL eligibility period as a champion.

Jakobsen’s Prospect Review and Draft Analysis

In this portion of the ESS’s scouting report of Mikael Jakobsen, we’re going to dig into who the player and agency are behind the player to give the SMJHL GM’s and his future SHL GM’s a better idea of who and what he is. Being a GM myself for the last 32 or 33 seasons consecutively in the Victory Hockey League, I know as well as most that even the best seeming prospect can run into troubles in life, consistency with training and go from being dubbed a “hero” to a “zero” very fast. Life happens! Shit happens. I also know that some late picks can turn into excellent picks and surprises that leave other GM’s wishing they would have. Every player in the draft is important because they have potential and no man or woman should be left behind. With that being said, let’s take a quick look and dive into what makes Mikael Jakobsen.

PROS & CONS
PROS

Longtime member -> If I remember correctly, I found some posts and my first player’s information on tapatalk or a site or something like that. The name started as something and then I believe was changed to Axelei Kyecholyze (RW). This player was created in S4 or 5 and was selected 1st overall by the Anaheim Outlaws. The member and agency have a long history and experience in the league, despite numerous breaks in between periods. This could have potential to be a plus for the team that drafts them. Nostalgia led to a return!

Scoring Forward - Similar to the storyline that Mikael Jakobsen is S17’s Hall of Famer Magnus Jakobsen’s son, he’s a scoring forward that can get the job done for any team that he plays for. He’s building himself up to be an absolute beast from anywhere on the ice and has the motivation to win cups… but his eyes are also strongly set on scoring titles! Individual success is important too and a player this hungry isn’t a detriment to having on your side.

Loyal - If the teams play their cards right, do the right things and are leading in the right direction, he’s fine with helping through a rebuild as long as it doesn’t take too long and they consistently head in the right direction. With that being said, he’s also fine with starting on a different team that is stronger and earning his role on the team. He doesn’t want to go somewhere though, learn to love the place and management, and then once his time comes along be shafted away because he no longer fits into the plans. Example, drafted to a good team.. Develops in 5 seasons and come that time they’re rebuilding so they move him. We get it. Business is business, but he’d rather not waste his time on that team then!

Motivated with a strong past - He’s created some good players here.. But he hasn’t been the most consistent and well touch on that too… but he’s been incredibly consistent in the Victory Hockey League and if a team and it’s management finds a way to get even some form of that consistency here - LOOK OUT! Again, a long time member with a lot of proven players in multiple leagues. At the end of the day though, this is the SHL. This is the only league that 100% matters when it comes to his past. His potential is good though with the motivation + past players of Fujikawa, Lindstrom, Kycholyze, Sven Wolf and Magnus Jakobsen.

Checking/Hitting/Strong - We could go on for days on what we think could be good about this prospect but the last thing we’ll briefly touch on is his ability to play a physical game. We’ve compared him to a certain NHL player, as we used to do with every scouting report, so once that’s listed you’ll get a better idea of this. Hopefully he remains a strong physical force while being able to stay out of the box the best they can.

CONS
His Consistency in the Past - Similar to the PRO that we had listed for him, he’s proven to be an amazing, consistent player and member in the SHL and VHL - especially the VHL. He’s been consistent there for the last 40+ seasons… and he’s had a good past here too with dabbles of managing and some good players… but he has a tendency with the last few players from the agency to play well, do well and then all of a sudden fizzle out. The biggest red flag before was the swap to FHM. They were so used to STHS that they just were too old and stubborn with no motivation to learn FHM. This would be my red flag - how big the flag is I’m unsure but I’d keep my eye on it. You have to gamble to win the pot though! Just remember, you can also lose your cash on hand!

Passing - His passing will be good but it won’t ever probably be super great. At the start, he wants to be a decently balanced player but everything is going to be focused on his ability to score and help score as much as possible to win games. He’s fine with assists and doing whatever he has to do to win, but at the end of the day who doesn’t love being the one to score the goals? Who knows though, maybe one day this becomes more of a plus too, but SC will always be stronger than PA!

Defensive Game - He will be balanced as we’ve stated, but at this time he’s going to be focusing more on his offensive side of the game. He wants to score goals but knows preventing them is just as important. Despite this, I don’t expect too much to go towards DF for the time being. I’d expect, if we could put a range on it, for him to be anywhere from 70-80% offensive right out of the gates, maybe even a little bit more. At the end of the day, this might even be how he turns out as a player. Good enough to stop the puck and not be a liability.

Player Analysis and Draft Thoughts

We believe that Mikael Jakobsen would be a strong candidate for any SMJHL team and that the teams should have him on his radar. Based on the information above, plus the other information we have that can be provided upon GM contact and request, we feel like overall he’s going to turn out to be an amazing SMJHL talent. Will this contribute to points? That’s tough to say. The TPE talent and skill will be there to do the job though. Now, looking into the future and thinking about his SHL days comes with some risk and we find that the major risk associated with this player is going to be his consistency issues in the past. He will easily make it into the SMJHL and thrive. He’s going to be one of their best prospects - whoever selects him. However, once he heads into the SHL it could be a different story and we somewhat explained why above. He always comes out of the gates hot and if you piled everything into an informational graph you would slowly start to see a decline as they hit the 1K range. Now, they do say that hopefully this time will be different but you never know. The agency is a very busy one, whether it be with other leagues or real life things. At the end of the day though, we feel he’d be a great top selection in the SMJHL draft and if you’re willing to hold discussions and be a gambler, the payout could be huge in the SHL too.

Player Ratings:
9.0C

A quick explanation: 9.0 states that this player’s ceiling and potential to reach strong talents are high. The potential and the player he could become are set at 9.0. However, this could fluctuate 0.5 in either direction. The “C” stands for the risk and the probability we find the 0.5 plus or minus will come into effect, with a majority of it (90%) leaning towards the risk factor. With the risk being higher, that means we feel like he leans, if he were to go one direction (plus or minus), that he would go towards the minus and be lower than 9.0. This also means that we have calculated risk with the player and he may make it, but he also might not make it and it’s up to the manager to do their homework and have their talks. For us, don’t let the “C” scare you away from taking and developing a good player. If things work out, the possibility of 9.0-9.5 is too strong to pass up. At the end of everything, for the SMJHL, we think he'll be a 9.0B and heading into the SHL is where the risk and probability could transition to a higher amount.
