Taking a look at the Vancouver Whalers today, the team I currently play for. The Whalers currently sit 11th in the league and are having a hard go of things this season. At one point earlier in the season they had climbed the standings due to a seven game win streak but things have settled down for the team as of late.

Sitting 11th is exactly where they also sat in season 68 but this year their winning percentage is a few points higher. This is a very young team with several rookies this season. In season 68, Pyotr Gallen led the team in goals (24) and points (75) so with him moving up to the SHLs Hamliton Steelhawks there was going to be a large hole to fill.

So far, the rookies have really played well and have been making an impact showing a lot of promise for Vancouver for the next few seasons. Anthony Simmons II playing the ride side for the Whalers scoring 11 goals and 16 assists for a total of 27 points. LeBron James isn't far behind with 13 goals and 15 assists for 28 points. Wednesday Addams is also having a solid rookie season scoring 6 goals and adding 24 assists for 30 points. Finally, Jeff Lewis has 21 goals and 17 assists for 38 points. Lewis currently leads all rookies in goals and sits third in points amongst rookies.

While it's fantastic that the rookies are doing a good job on the ice, the second year players are also performing quite well. Klaes Ashford is sitting at 13 goals, 21 assists for 34 points. Kool-Aid McKinstry has 14 goals and 14 assists for 28 points.

Bojack Calhoun is in his fourth season with the Whalers. He currently leads the team in shot son goal with 103. He has 9 goals and 12 assists for 21 points from the blue line. Bojack also leads the team in blocks with 65. Also putting up points from the defenceman is anther rookie, Alex Orpheus with 7 goals and 9 assists for 16 points.

While the team doesn't drop the gloves at all, it does try to lay the body. A few guys stand out in this regard. Sven Panda is an absolute monster on defence standing 7 feet tall and weighing in at 300 pounds. He leads the team in hits with 118 with Sergey Bombay (114) and Wednesday Addams (110) next inline for hits.

For overall game rating, Jeff Lewis leads the way with a 73 followed by Wednesday Addams, Sergey Bombay, and Anthony Simmons II all at 71. For offensive rating, Jeff Lewis leads the way here as well at a 78 followed by Wednesday Addams at 72 and both Sergey Bombay and Anthony Simmons II at 69.

The defensive ratings see Sven Panda on top with a 72, Bojack Calhoun at 71 and LeBron James at 68.

In goal, Noah Charlevoix carrys most of the games so far with Sam Conroy backing him up. Despite Vancouvers issues keeping the puck out of their end, Charlevoix has four shutouts this season tying his personal record for a season and we still have 20 or so games to go.

The Whalers are having a tough time now but they have a lot of promise and hope to see some improvement over the next few season as their players continue to mature and grow.
