Season 71 Scouting Report Part 2.
#1

Picking up where we left off, Nevada Battleborn to Yukon Malamute. I am only scouting active members that have logged on this month and have done something to improve their player.

Brock Samson – Nevada Battleborn – Right Wing
TPE – 234
Games Played: 50 – Goals: 10 – Assists: 26 – Rating: -8 – Blocked Shots: 28 – Hits: 132

Two-way forwards with a scoring touch are worth their weight in gold, and Brock is a prime example of a budding premier two way forward. He has a good shot; he is good at moving with the puck with good stick handling skills and speed. He is no slouch in the defensive end with above average defensive skills but knows how to read and react to plays. If there is a negative in Brock’s game, his shooting while good is only effective closer up then some of the elite shooters in this class.

Strength:
Defensive Reads – 13
Shooting Accuracy – 13
Getting Open – 13

Weakness:
Hitting – 9
Shot Blocking – 9
Shooting Range – 10

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Max Carnage – Nevada Battleborn – Center
TPE – 282
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 24 – Assists: 18 – Rating: -6 – Shots Blocked: 31 – Hits: 91

Max may be the best all-around player in this draft. No weaknesses to his game, and everything is above average to good. He is not elite in anyone area, but he can do it all and every week he just keeps getting better and better. He is not afraid to mix it up, work the dirty areas, he lays hits, he is really good in his own zone. And he has not sacrificed his face off skills to get good (56.4% won this season).

Strength:
Offensive Reads – 13
Defensive Reads – 13
Face Offs – 13

Weakness:
Aggression – 7
Bravery – 9
Screening – 10

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thomas Sawschuk – Nevada Battleborn – Center
TPE – 257
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 27 – Assists: 18 – Rating: 11 – Blocked Shots: 36 – Hits: 97

A playmaking two way forward, Thomas strength is in his offensive game and how he moves the puck around. With good speed and acceleration as well as puck handling skills he is good at moving the puck. He can read the play extremely well and knows when to make a signature pass. Defensively he doesn’t lay big hits but knows how to play the body and does well reading the play. He is a solid overall player that has few weaknesses to his game, if he would work on his hitting and screening he would be one of the top two way forwards in this draft.

Strength:
Offensive Reads – 14
Puck handling – 13
Speed – 13

Weakness:
Screening – 5
Hitting – 5
Shooting Range – 9

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

shnopple lopple – Nevada Battleborn - Left Defense
TPE – 238
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 8 – Assists: 26 – Rating: 22 – Blocked Shots: 65 – Hits: 131

A true offensive defenseman, Shnopple will become a power play QB1 at some point, if he is not already there. He has a strong shot from the point, and he is good at moving the puck whether he carries it himself or dishes with a good pass. He knows and reads both offensive and defensive plays very well and he has good speed to go with his skill set. Shnopple relies on his stick work and position on defense both of which are average maybe above average but keeps away from the rough stuff.

Strength:
Offensive Read – 14
Shooting Range – 14
Puck handling – 13

Weakness:
Checking – 5
Hitting – 5
Screening – 9

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heem Team – Newfoundland Berserkers – Left Wing
TPE – 195
Games Played: 29 – Goals: 6 – Assists: 9 – Rating: 5 – Shots Blocked: 3 – Hits: 67

This offensively gifted new addition to the league has a good shot and can shoot from almost anywhere with great range for a forward and good accuracy. He reads offensive plays well and can moves the puck well with good passing and puck handling skills. His speed is above average, and he is not a liability in his own end, but he does not excel there either. It is still early in his junior career, and it will be interesting to see how he develops.

Strength:
Shooting Accuracy – 13
Offensive Reads – 13
Puck handling – 13

Weakness:
Bravery – 5
Shot Blocking – 5
Screening – 11

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luke Labrie – Newfoundland Berserkers – Right Wing
TPE – 219
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 7 – Assists: 35 – Rating: 25 – Blocked Shots: 47 – Hits: 195

A two way force good in both ends of the ice. Luke is has done a masterful job of working on all aspects of his player to ensure there are no character faults on the ice. Perhaps the strongest part of Luke’s game would be puck possession as he excels in puck handling and getting open. With so much parity in his build there are only a few weaknesses to speak of, hitting, screening and shooting range, but he makes up for these areas with other strengths.

Strength:
Puck handling – 14
Getting Open – 13
Checking – 12

Weakness:
Screening – 5
Hitting – 7
Shooting Range – 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Erik Erikson – Newfoundland Berserkers – Right Wing
TPE – 270
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 26 – Assists: 23 – Rating: 15 – Blocked Shots: 15 – Hits: 73

Erik is a two way forward that excels in the offensive aspect of the game. Offensively all of his stats lean towards great, but nothing stands out as elite among the draft class, which is not a knock at how well he is build offensively as there is no weakness to his game in the opponent’s zone, he can, skate, shoot, and pass, all are top notch. Defensively he has a solid build with the only lacking area being shot blocks, as it evident on the stat line.

Strength:
Shooting Accuracy – 13
Speed – 13
Passing – 13

Weakness:
Shot Blocking – 5
Hitting – 9
Screening – 9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Adelbert Steiner – Newfoundland Berserkers – Right Defense
TPE – 274
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 10 – Assists: 21 – Rating: 20 – Blocked Shots: 86 – Hits: 125

One of the best two way defenders in the draft this year. Steiner has done a masterful job at honing his craft. He has put his focus in aspects of his game that are best suited to his talents, and he can be a menace in his own zone, or a QB on the powerplay and he doesn’t look out of place in either spot. If there is a weakness to his game, and there are so few, it would be foot speed, if a forward gets a step on him they can get by him, that is if they can get around him.

Strength:
Checking – 14
Defensive Reads – 13
Passing – 13

Weakness:
Shot Blocking – 10
Shooting Range - 11
Shooting Accuracy – 11

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Net Man – Quebec City Citadelles – Goalie
TPE – 234
Games Played: 29 – Wins: 6 – Losses: 16 – OTL: 1 – Shut Outs: 1 – GAA: 4.56 – Save %: 0.871

Net Man has been building an overall solid build, there is no weakness in his game, but nothing is a standout in turn. Relying on a solid foundation to his goaltending playing positionally sounds hockey with good rebound and reflex control. Net Man’s best aspect may be how mentally tough he is, he doesn’t let a bad goal shake him and he is ready to go at moments notice for Quebec City.

Strength:
Mental Toughness – 12
Rebound – 12
Positioning – 12

Weakness:
Passing – 10
Skating – 10
Poke Check – 10

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boho Biscuit – Regina Elk – Left Defense
TPE – 201
Games Played: 49 – Goals: 5 – Assists: 18 – Rating: -13 – Blocked Shots: 55 – Hits: 69

A defensive defender that has some offensive flair to his game. At this point Boho will not be confused or thought of as an offensive defenseman. But Boho has a great pass to get the puck out of the zone, and a strong enough shot to be utilized in the offensive end, take a look at those 5 goals. Defensively Boho is slowly becoming a monster. Still there are steps to take, but he has all the makings of a top shutdown defender of the future.

Strength:
Defensive Reads – 13
Checking – 13
Passing – 13

Weakness:
Screening – 6
Puck handling – 9
Offensive Reads – 9

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ally Mathieson – Regina Elk – Goalie
TPE – 224
Games Played: 43 – Wins: 17 – Losses: 20 – OTL: 2 – Shutouts: 2 – GAA: 3.37 – Save %: 0.888

Ally is a positionally sound goalie working on the fundamentals of her position, rebound control, recovery, and reflexes. Ally is a stay at home goalie and will not come out to play the puck or the skater, and if a bad goal happens it can affect the rest of the game for Ally. Her form needs a little work as it is average but that will come in time as the focus has been on the foundation of Ally’s play.

Strength:
Positioning – 14
Rebound – 14
Reflexes – 14

Weakness:
Mental Toughness – 5
Skating – 5
Poke Check – 5

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just-to-Buy My-Love – Regina Elk – Right Wing
TPE: 250
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 10 – Assists: 27 – Rating: -14 – Blocked Shots: 35 – Hits: 144

I can’t call My-Love a defensive forward, but that is where Just-To excels in his game. You see he is a great offensive forward too in a lot of aspects. While he may not put as many goals in the net, he is an amazing setup man, reads the play well, and can move with or without the puck. Shooting may be his weak point in both offensive and defense.

Strength:
Defensive Reads – 13
Positioning – 13
Passing - 13

Weakness:
Shot Blocking – 9
Shooting Range – 10
Shooting Accuracy – 11

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mercedes Baylé – Regina Elk – Left Wing
TPE – 277
Games Played 66 – Goals: 22 – Assists: 31 – Rating: -20 – Blocked Shots: 11 – Hits: 156

Over 66 games Mercedes only blocked 11 shots!? I figured you would get 20+ by dumb luck alone, either she is the luckiest player around or unluckiest I am not sure which way you want to take that. With that out of the way she is an offensive force of nature! Phenomenal at creating room to move, great at putting pucks on the net, creating chances by screening, or moving the puck to an open teammate. Defensively she is no slouch with the exception of blocked shots, and she is fast enough to beat most defenders.

Strengths:
Offensive Read – 14
Puck handling – 14
Getting Open – 14

Weakness:
Shot Blocking – 5
Hitting – 5
Bravery – 5

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kyle Baretto – St. Louis Scarecrows – Goalie
TPE – 190
Games Played: 33 – Wins: 5 – Losses: 21 – OTL: 5 – Shut Outs: 2 – GAA: 3.96 – Save % 0.881

When Kyle is on, he is on, with two shut outs the most out of any rookie goalie. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened to often this season. Kyle has an average build across the board with the strength of his game in positioning, reflexes and he is mentally tough. He is not afraid to play the puck but that can catch him out of position. Kyle will have a good amount of work ahead of him as he continues to develop, the good news he has a good mentor to help him over the next few seasons in Kay Lee.

Strengths:
Positioning – 12
Reflexes – 12
Mental Toughness – 12

Weakness:
Skating – 9
Puck Handling – 9
Recovery – 10

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Marshall Madden – St. Louis Scarecrows – Left Wing
TPE – 243
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 13 – Assists: 15 – Rating: -44 – Blocked Shots: 46 – Hits: 174

A true two way forward. Marshall has a good range for shooting, but not elite in accuracy. He is good at moving the puck but average at passing the puck. His defensive side is much the same; good at using his body and working over opponents, knows how to be in the right place at the right time, but below average in shot blocking. It’s hard to get a beat on Marshall as he is slowly developing into a very good all around two way player.

Strength:
Offensive Reads – 13
Acceleration – 13
Positioning – 13

Weakness:
Shot Blocking – 8
Passing – 10
Strength – 11

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dominik Winters – St. Louis Scarecrows – Center
TPE: 281
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 11 – Assists: 33 – Rating: -33 – Blocked Shots: 66 – Hits: 76

I am curious how Dominik is going to develop over the next while. Most players you can see what they are doing and what their most likely next steps will be. Winters has a two way forward build but it is everywhere. He is elite in reading and understanding what is going on in the offensive zone, but only good to great in his skills he brings in the offensive zone. Defensively you could argue he is better skilled and while talented his defensive reads are not as good as his offensive reads. Overall Dominik could be the future mold of two way forwards.

Strength:
Offensive Reads – 15
Face Offs – 13
Positioning – 13

Weakness:
Screening – 8
Shooting Range – 10
Checking – 10

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jay Bryzi – St. Louis Scarecrows – Right Defense
TPE – 276
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 5 – Assists: 12 – Rating: -35 – Blocked Shots: 95 – Hits: 125

At this time Jay is a defensive two way defender…I feel like that is a copout, but here me out. Jay’s shot is nothing great, to be honest it is average at best for a defender. But Jay excels in all other aspects of the offensive game, great passing, puck handling and getting open. Defensively Jay is great at reading the plays and good at acting on it. If his shooting was better I would put him as an offensive or at the very least two way defender, but with a lacking shot he gets a defensive grade.

Strength:
Puck handling – 13
Getting Open – 13
Defensive Reads – 13

Weakness:
Balance – 10
Shooting Accuracy – 10
Hitting – 11

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ryan Quintana-Green – Vancouver Whalers – Right Defense
TPE – 249
Games Played: 52 – Goals: 6 – Assists: 18 – Rating: 4 – Blocked Shots: 49 – Hits: 89

Two way defender that is incredibly hockey smart. Really, really good at reading the plays both in the offensive and defensive zone but may be lacking a few of the tools to excel in either zone. Clearly Ryan’s calling card is how well he moves the puck, crisp passes and a quick first step with excellent control. Defensively Ryan is average in everything he does but always knows what is going on. A lack of top speed will hurt Ryan when opponents break out on him.

Strength:
Passing - 15
Offensive Read – 14
Defensive Read – 14

Weakness:
Stick Checking – 9
Balance – 9
Strength – 10

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Johnny FourStar – Vancouver Whalers – Right Wing
TPE – 278
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 18 – Assists: 37 – Rating: 10 – Blocking Shots: 43 – Hits: 182

One of the key members to Vancouvers youth movement Johnny has taken advantage of the opportunity he has been given to shine. An offensive stud with a phenomenal shot, great at getting open and reading the play for one timer opportunities. Defensively Johnny’s game needs a little work as he is average or below average in that part of his game. Simply put, you want someone that will create offense get Johnny, you need someone who is defensively minded keep looking.

Strength:
Shooting Accuracy – 15
Getting Open – 14
Offensive Read – 14

Weakness:
Hitting – 5
Shot Blocking – 9
Stick Checking – 9

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thomas Liebold – Vancouver Whalers – Right Wing
TPE – 282
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 18 – Assists: 45 – Rating: -2 – Blocked Shots: 47 – Hits: 230

I don’t know what they put in his breakfast cereal, but Thomas was a human wrecking machine, 230 hits! He is also a very good all around two way player. With good stats in everything he does. There is no real weakness in Thomas’ game and his stat lines shows it, nearly a point per game player in his rookie season is amazing. I would expect as Thomas grows he will work on his shot as a lower stat on offensive and shot blocking on defense.

Strength:
Hitting – 13
Passing – 13
Speed – 13

Weakness:
Getting Open – 11
Shooting Range – 11
Shot Blocking – 11

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bob Wehadababyitsaboy – Vancouver Whalers – Left Defense
TPE – 250
Games Played 66 – Goals:6 – Assists: 23 – Rating: 3 – Blocked Shots: 79 – Hits: 111

Number one shutdown defense man. I gave Bob the Number one because he is the only player so far that has improved his Stamina. Defensively he is sound with a great positional game, reads the plays well and can react to them as needed. Bob also is good at moving the puck out of the danger areas with a good pass or can carry it if needed on his own. Just don’t ask Bob to shoot the puck.

Strength:
Stamina - 15
Positioning – 14
Defensive Reads – 13

Weakness:
Agility – 8
Shooting Range – 9
Shooting Accuracy – 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inactive Forever – Vancouver Whalers – Right Wing
TPE: 278
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 27 – Assists: 37 – Rating: 5 – Blocked Shots: 24 – Hits: 185

A pure goal scorer that is what Inactive brings to the table. His job is to get open and put pucks on net. He has a wicked shot and reads the offensive zone extremely well. Defensively it is a work in progress as most offensive forwards tend to be. Forever also has a step up on most of the competition with a great first step and top speed so he can blow by defenders or take the hot pass in for a break away on net.

Strength:
Offensive Read – 15
Getting Open – 15
Speed – 14

Weakness:
Checking – 5
Hitting – 5
Defensive Read – 9

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Larry Johnson The 3rd – Vancouver Whalers – Center
TPE – 176
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 15 – Assists: 20 – Rating: -26 – Blocked Shots: 15 – Hits: 76

Vancouver has some elite rookie talent and some active that will require more time to develop. Larry is the later, he is active but needs to put in the work to get rewarded on the ice. He is built a face off machine, setup man. That can be called upon for key wins at strategic times. While he reads defensive plays very well, he doesn’t have the tools to act upon the plays yet. Up close he has a good shot, but the power is not there for farther shots.

Strength:
Passing – 14
Face offs – 13
Defensive Reads – 13

Weakness:
Positioning – 5
Checking – 5
Stick Checking – 5

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bellamy Blake – Vancouver Whalers – Left Defense
TPE – 287
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 15 – Assists: 37 – Rating: 11 – Blocked Shots: 87 – Hits: 120

A very talented two way defender that could become a powerplay QB1. Bellamy has very few weaknesses in their game. The biggest dip I can see is a lack of desire to lay out hits, Bellamy’s shot from the distance doesn’t seem to have the power most offensive defenders have. Outside of that Blake has a very healthy mix of good to great stats across the board. Perhaps foot speed would be the last area that could use a touch up to keep up with top end forwards.

Strength:
Passing – 15
Getting Open – 14
Stick Checking – 13

Weakness:
Hitting – 7
Shooting Range – 11
Balance – 9

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nate Gray – Vancouver Whalers – Left Wing
TPE – 176
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 11 – Assists: 23 – Rating: -23 – Blocked Shots: 16 – Hits: 132

ALRIGHT ENOUGH VANCOUVER WITH YOUR ACTIVE ROOKIES! In seriousness it is great to see.

Nate is active but falls in the same category as Thomas, needing some time to develop a bit more. Hopefully he will apply his craft and continue to develop his player as the season move forward. Nate relies on a HELL OF A SHOT, A quick first step to create separation and while not exactly fast, can keep the puck safe on his stick. Unfortunately everything else is a work in progress at this point.

Strength:
Shooting Accuracy – 15
Acceleration – 15
Puck handling – 15

Weakness:
Passing – 5
Defensive Read – 5
Positioning – 5

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Crazy Tomato – Yukon Malamutes – Center
TPE – 215
Games Played: 32 – Goals : 5 – Assists : 9 – Rating: 0 – Blocked Shots: 24 – Hits: 40

Tomato has developed into a solid two way playmaking center. His best skills are passing and faceoffs. And everything else is average to good depending where you look, as a whole it is pretty evenly split between defensive and offensive side of the game. Perhaps the one area he could work on is bravery so he will have the confidence to make the right move when the opportunity presents itself.

Strength:
Passing – 14
Face Off – 13
Defensive Reads – 12

Weakness:
Bravery – 6
Screening – 9
Positioning – 11

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Might-go IA – Yukon Malamutes – Right Defense
TPE – 249
Games Played – 66 – Goals: 9 – Assists: 19 – Rating: -9 – Blocked Shots: 79 – Hits: 86

Offensive Defender with a two way tendency. There isn’t a lot of holes in IA’s game. Hitting, Bravery, and general physical nature can be labeled as weaknesses. What Might-go offers a long hard shot from the point, a great pass, good offensive instincts. A solid defensive foundation with good skills not great and a great hockey mind on both sides of the ice. Might-go could go any sort of way in development, a more well round two way defender, pure offense. I would work on improving some strength and speed to win those battles for the puck.

Strength:
Shooting Range – 14
Passing – 14
Acceleration – 13

Weakness:
Hitting – 5
Strength – 11
Stick Checking – 11

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jordan Tanner – Yukon Malamutes – Left Wing
TPE – 254
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 20 – Assists: 22 – Rating: 2 – Blocked Shots: 22 – Hits: 144

Jordan is an aggressive all around forward, his strength is in his overall good to great offensive skills and being brave enough to pull the trigger when needed, something a lot of Rookies lack. On the defensive side he is average as a whole but offers few gaps in his game. He’s also one of the few players willing to drop the gloves, even though he couldn’t find a dance partner this year. He is going to be a pest for years to come to opposing teams.

Strength:
Getting Open – 13
Shooting Accuracy – 13
Speed – 13

Weakness:
Shooting Range – 10
Shot Blocking – 10
Checking – 10

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Donny Dangle – Yukon Malamutes – Right Wing
TPE – 211
Games Played: 32 – Goals: 4 – Assists: 10 – Rating: -9 – Blocked Shots: 11 – Hits: 68

The right winger is an offensive talent. Besides screening the goalie, he can do almost anything in the offensive zone and he does it very well, with a great shot being his signature. Defensively there is work to be done as he is average at best in his own zone. One of Donny’s strengths he is aggressive and will be brave enough to call his own shot if needed. The only downside, Donny is great but not elite in any aspect of his game.

Strength:
Shooting Accuracy – 13
Offensive Reads – 13
Speed – 13

Weakness:
Shot Blocking – 7
Hitting – 8
Defensive Reads – 9

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theodore Svatos – Yukon Malamute – Right Wing
TPE – 280
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 27 – Assists: 29 – Rating: -2 – Blocked Shots: 15 – Hits: 169

Perhaps the most gifted sniper in this draft, he is able to read the plays, get open and handle the puck like few others, with a pinpoint accurate shot and great velocity behind it. Offensively his only weak spot is working in front of the net. Defensively Svatos is average, his hitting and blocked shots need a lot of work but that is not why you draft Svatos (not that you can). Svatos looks to be the focal point for his team’s offense going forward.

Strength:
Shooting Accuracy – 15
Getting Open – 15
Offensive Reads – 15

Weakness:
Hitting – 5
Shot Blocking – 5
Stick Checking – 10

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Furious Chicken – Left Defense – Yukon Malamutes
TPE – 292
Games Played: 66 – Goals: 2 – Assists: 17 – Rating: -3 – Blocked Shots: 68 – Hits: 116

Defensively sound hockey. Chicken maybe the poster boy for shutdown defender, he is excellent at reading defensive plays, seeing them develop and positioning himself to take away lanes or knock a puck loose. He has a great pass to get the puck out of the zone and he is above average at carrying the puck if needed. He will not be used in offensive situations; his shot would miss the broad side of a barn at 2 feet away.

Strength:
Defensive Read – 14
Checking – 14
Passing – 13

Weakness:
Shooting Accuracy – 5
Shooting Range – 5
Offensive Read – 11

There you have it, all active season 71 rookies and their scouting reports. Good luck to all draftees in the coming draft!

Hey you got me as a two way forward and that’s 100% what I’m going for! Despite not really having crazy offensive build numbers, Winters definitely had some great moments offensively this year and it’s just a matter of maintaining the good defense while building on the base of offense
