Happy Friday everyone. As we now have hit the midway point of the season with, for most of us, 33 games played of the 66 game season it is time to check in on some of our J award progress to see who is in the running.
JARED HANSON AWARD
Points Leader Shadow Fenix - - 54 Points Shadow is having a bit of a show this season with Colorado leading the way with 54 points, however that lead going into the halfway point is not very much as others are hot on their heels, namely... Froya Solberg - - 52 Points and Lily Jin Morrow - - 51 Points With only a two and three point lead, respectively over these two, it could really be a toss up through the second half of the season. Other's to watch out for in the Hanson Award listing include... Brandon Gilleyes - - 49 Points Ubba Lodbrok - - 48 Points
and
Jussi Mutou - - 48 Points
ROBERTO MARTUCCI AWARD
Goals Leader
Lily Jin Morrow - - 31 Goals
A familiar face from the points race is Lily Jin Morrow from Vancouver. I wish I could say that going into the halfway point their lead was surmountable but once again, it is a very tight race through the top five-ish players looking for this particular award. Hot on Lily's heels this time is points frontrunner
Shadow Fenix - - 28 Goals
Who is looking most likely to take ownership of both awards this coming season. The closeness of leaders of course doesn't stop there. Other notables in this race are as follows and also, based on their current production, have just as good a chance as any at taking the top Goals Leader award at the end of the season.
Betzee Nickelback - - 26 Goals
Froya Solberg - - 26 Goals
Gordon-William Gibbles - - 22 Goals
Cal Juice - - 22 Goals
Jesus Murphy - - 22 Goals
Vyacheslav Shevchenko - - 22 Goals
Brandon Gilleyes - - 22 Goals
BRANDON HOLMES AWARD
Top Defensive Forward
While I personally have no idea, other than prior listed statistics, the awards team will go by on this...my thought is that since it is a Defensive Forward award, it should include forwards who's roles are tactically oriented more towards defense than offense, which includes two-way players. As such then, I only included forwards in the following tactical roles: Two-Way Forward, Up and Down Winger, Grinder, Aggressive Forechecker, Backchecking Forward, Shadow. I didn't include roles like Counter-Attacking forward and others as they are, I feel, more offensively oriented in their archetype.
With that being said, and utilizing specific statistics from prior award ceremonies, I took an account of top five-ish leaders in each category and then summed up how many categories that player is a leader in to come up with this list. It is also the same method I used in Quilha Agante and Alexis Metzler below.
Roger Murdock - - Leader in 3 Categories
20 P / 29 SB / 26 HIT / 13 GvA / 19 TkA / 1.46 GA/TA / 33.3 SA/60
Marek Carda - - Leader in 3 Categories
40 P / 23 SB / 62 HIT / 18 GvA / 24 TkA / 1.33 GA/TA / 25.4 SA/60
Ryland Murphy - - Leader in 3 Categories
42 P / 22 SB / 93 HIT / 50 GvA / 45 TkA / 0.90 GA/TA / 31.4 SA/60
Johnny Patey V2 - - Leader in 3 Categories
33 P / 22 SB / 60 HIT / 14 GvA / 28 TkA / 2.0 GA/TA / 27.9 SA/60
Sonja Solberg - - Leader in 3 Categories
47 P / 20 SB / 80 HIT / 36 GvA / 38 TkA / 1.06 GA/TA / 32.2 SA/60
Caper Poirot - - Leader in 3 Categories
13 P / 27 SB / 71 HIT / 22 GvA / 14 TkA / 0.64 GA/TA / 47.2 SA/60
Other notables in this line with two category leads each includes:
Dag-Otto Bjorntjanst -
Cob O'Corn -
Entropy Sanchez -
Nathan Abel -
Bog Damsel -
QUILHA AGANTE TROPHY
Top Defenseman
Eric Vanderberg Jr - - Leader in 3 Categories
8 G / 25 A / 33 P / 4 GvA / 52 TkA / 13.00 GA-TA / 37 SB / 61 HIT
Chuck Chunky - - Leader in 3 Categories
8G / 23 A / 31 P / 4 GvA / 38 TkA / 9.5 GA-TA / 46 SB / 75 HIT
Juan Tymer - - Leader in 2 Categories
Groaty Bronson - - Leader in 2 Categories
Olivija Agate - - Leader in 2 Categories
Demir Bellona - - Leader in 2 Categories
Its hard enough as a defenseman in most leagues to be a top 5 leader in one category, but when you are involved in two and three categories as a league leader, its time to pay attention. In my own personal opinion, the race is between Vanderberg and Chunky in this one. It is either of theirs to lose as the season goes into part two. Based on team performance though, I wouldn't be surprised to see Tymer from Quebec jump up into three categories of lead, but only time will tell.
ALEXIS METZLER
Top Defensive Defenseman
Similar to the Defensive Forward award, there are tactical roles that by archetype are more defensive than others, even in the defenseman world. Those included here for this award are: Stay-At-Home Defenseman, Punishing Defenseman, Old-School Defenseman, Crease-Clearing Defenseman and Shutdown Defenseman. These are the roles, by FHM definition are Defensive Defenseman. From there, and from the categories listed in prior award ceremonies, the defenseman to watch are as follows:
Groaty Bronson - - Leader in 4 Categories
58 P/ 115 SB / 58 HIT / 11 GvA / 40 TkA / 3.64 GA-TA / 5.2 GA/60 / 42.8 SA/60
Niclas Sundqvist - - Leader in 3 Categories
67 P / 43 SB / 67 HIT / 9 GvA / 39 TkA / 4.33 GA-TA / 2.9 GA/60 / 26.8 SA/60
Sebastien Levesque - - Leader in 3 Categories
80 P / 49 SB / 80 HIT / 9 GvA / 38 TkA / 4.22 GA-TA / 3.2 GA/60 / 25.2 SA/60
Eric Vanderberg Jr - - Leader in 3 Categories
61 P / 37 SB / 61 HIT / 4 GvA / 52 TkA / 13.00 GA-TA / 2.2 GA/60 / 30.4 SA/60
Others to keep an eye on as they are all leaders in two categories each are as follows:
Jean-François Bokassa -
Napoleon Dinklage -
Josh Fewer -
Valerija Serapin -
Chuff D'Lee -
Cracker Pizza -
So while we relax this weekend and prepare for round two of the season, arguably the more important part of the season, we'll keep a close eye on these players and see where they end up by the time the final buzzer has sounded and we hop into the post-season.
I'll also be curious to see where this stacks up vs the official mid-season watch list that should come out soon from the SMJHL Awards committee.

Nice job Chevy. I love how you calculate the Brandon Holmes Award stats. SA/60 can be misleading though, as some good defense-oriented players are put in priority in your defensive zone or on PK, and they might/should get more shots against, compared to players put in the offensive zone or are on the PP.

I hadn't actually taken that into consideration. Its good to keep mindful of though for sure.

@Chevy how did you find out what roles players used? Is there a place to see this?
