Deep Dive 1

7.

On January 15 2043, Nevada Battleborn faced the San Diego Tidal. Both of these teams are neck and neck in the Southern conference of SMJHL. Nevada is currently sitting at 4th and San Diego at 5th. You can imagine that this game was going to be crazy. The game begins and surely, Nevada takes the first goal of the night, scored by Weldon McConnell in only 4 minutes of play. But this lead was short lived as the Tidal came back strong and evened the playing field with a goal from Gina Pinard. They then commenced to take the lead with another goal from Jurijs Ralfs. First period ends and it is 2-1 for the Tidal. This first period was an onslaught for San Diego as they took 15 shots whereas Nevada only had 5. The second period begins and both teams are playing very well. Not much happens and the period ends with no goals. 13 shots from both teams for this period. Finally the 3rd period begins and it is basically the DO or DIE. This is where Nevada turned to steroids and just started pummeling San Diego with shots. They took 24 shots in this period and surely you can expect some goals. Being behind one goal, they scored three goals in this period to take and capitalize on the 4-3 win. What a game this was, and this put Nevada on top. They are on a winning streak and hopefully can continue it.

Today we talk about the first ever stream, as it became a joke among friends for a time. My player, Gwendolyn Telenn, got her first point ever against the Carolina Kraken. The problem with a ram's arrogance though is that fighting in the ocean leads to drowning. While Gwendolyn started Nevada strong, the Kraken tightened its grip around them quickly and drowned its prey on a 10-1 game. For the rest of the stream, Nevada also lost. With a Nevada-Maine score of 1-4 and Nevada-Ottawa score of 3-4 Nevada had a truly weak start to the season. Literally Wizard had good points, just really carrying the team for the time. Past Nevada, QCC (The team with a few friends on it) won both of their games, crushing both Yukon and the Raptors with 3x and 5x the points of their opponents. STL (Another team with a friend) got crushed 2-7 against Detroit and was beaten by Tidal 3-6.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

7. On February 5th 2043 during a SMJHL match between Falcons and Highlanders things turned bizarre. In the second period Highlanders center Pique Boo took a two minute minor penalty for hooking and was seen putting something in their mouth in the penalty bin. The referee F. Astley, who prides himself on being able to make calls quickly, promtly assumed Pique was using narcotics and gave Pique another penalty for tripping while Pique already was serving a penalty. Pique explained after the game that it was in fact a breath mint they enjoyed and not a pill.  This event has sent waves across the league. Astley has been suspended while the league investigates his actions. Needless to say, this sort of arbitariness should not exist in ice hockey refereeing or in any other refereeing for that matter.  The debate of whether or not use of narcotics should be grounds for a tripping penalty is ongoing. For  7.  (comment on a SMJHL steam): I picked the SMJHL S76 Regular Season Day 19.

The stream started with a 3-2 win from Anchorage against Vancouver. Muon was the start of the goal with the hatty. Next up, Quebec City, once again, won a game, this time against the Newfoundland Berserkers. Newfoundland is one of the only team that can aspire to beat QCC in the playoffs. After this, Kelowna had a rare victory of 5-1 against Yukon. Their goalie Grant Berd had a great game stopping 37 shots. Maine won the next game 5-0 against Detroit also off the shoulders of their goalie Shotty McStopper who had a shutout facing 27 shots.  Finally, on the final game of this first day of the sim, the Raptors beat Ottawa in a high schoring game, 6-5. This was a well rounded win for Colorado with no player accumulating more than 2 points.

A sad moment of the stream was when Carolina beat St-Louis 4-1. Another loss for the crows against their rivals.

7. Watch a Stream:

S76 Regular Season Day 19 Stream
Van 2 Anchorage 3
Another tough day offensively for the Whalers, failing to score three once again. However, NoNo Jo continues to be a bright spot, scoring twice more to add to his total. The Stranger had a tough outing, rocking a .893 save % while Stun Gun shut down the Whalers, stopping 34 of 36 to collect the win.

Newfoundland 3 QC 2
Newfoundland grabbed the lead less than four minutes into the first and refused to give it up, tallying three goals before QC scored one to secure the win.

Kelowna 5 Yukon 1
This was a penalty-filled affair, with neither team staying out of the box with a total of 30 PIMs on the night. Kelowna was efficient on the PP, scoring twice on the man advantage

Detroit 0 Maine 5
While Detroit was undisciplined tonight, they got buried at 5v5, giving up 4 ES goals on the night

Colorado 6 Ottawa 5
Barn burner of a game, with Colorado capitalizing on Ottawa mistakes to score twice while down a man

Anchorage 2 Vancouver 5
Vancouver’s offence showed up tonight, led by a two goal outburst by rookie defenseman Trevor Lopez

(Way over word limit so will only comment on Vancouver games now)
Yukon 5 Vancouver 2
Once again an unlucky night for Vancouver running up against a hot goalie, but there comes a point where the team needs to start finishing with the season beginning to be on the line. 3two goals on 35 shots needs to improve

Nevada 1 Vancouver 4
And just like that the Whalers respond with a much better night with respect to offence. Scoring 4 on 28 shots with GM’s Son leading the charge and walking away with first star honours, it was a good night for the lads

Vancouver 0 Great Falls 3
Another frustrating offensive night for the Whalers. The team needs to keep doing the right things and get those good looks, but it’s clear the team will need more guys to take the next step and really lead this team offensively

7. Watched the SMJHL Playoff stream from earlier today. Happened to catch the games between CAR and COL. The first game, COL got away with a quick 1-0 lead and never looked back. It was my first time ever watching one of the streams and honestly I know nothing about Hockey so it's difficult for me to analyze - but even to an untrained eye it was obvious that CAR was outmatched. Within minutes COL went up 2-0. CAR had a few early shots on goal but nothing ever came from it. Colorado RAN away with the game, ending up 8-0 to take game 6. You'd think with all of this momentum that it was a done deal for game 7. APPARENTLY NOT. Somehow, Carolina came crawling back like a cockroach making it's way out from under the fridge. You think you could spray it with some RAID and it'd be done - but noooo, Carolina just refuses to die. Game 7 would be tight in the first period, but Carolina would score on a powerplay early in the 2nd. They followed it up with another quick goal a few minutes later to go up 2:0, and then proceeded to hang on to the lead for the rest of the game. COL managed to score once to bring it to 1:2 - but CAR answered quick and ended up running away with it 1:4. A tragedy for fans everywhere.

7. The game I watched was the Simulation Major Juniors Hockey League Finals for the four-star cup where the Quebec City Citadels stood off against Main Timbers. It was a harrowing first round where the Citadels and Timbers went back and forth shot for shot going 3 for 3 and forcing the battle into overtime where the Citadels managed to claw their way to victory with one distinctive shot. In the second game, however, it was a wash. Either tragedy or crushing victory depending on which side you were cheering on. The Citadels started strong quickly taking two points and managing to defend their goal with ferocity until the second period where the Timbers smashed their way back into the lead managing to rack up five goals in quick successions dismantling their opponents in one fell swoop. The final period started off with the Timbers gaining another goal before the Citadels quickly fired back with two of their own but there just wasn't enough time and despite the grit and determination of the Owls they where simply no match for the trees.
