Rick Metcalf-Kearns: The story behind the player
#1

After the retirement of Richard Metcalf at the end of the regular season, he announced his son Richard Metcalf-Kearns had the intentions of playing in the NWJHL next season. A lot of buzz came from the emergence of RMK, most of which was where did this player come from, how did he come to be. Today we take a look at Richard Metcalf-Kearns: The story behind the player.

The Beginning
Our story starts in Hamilton. Metcalf was just starting his career with the North stars who were playing the steelhawks this night. Now Metcalf had just come off winning the challenge cup with the comets and was at the peak of his game. With ring in hand he had a good amount of confidence and was becoming well known around the league. He was getting sponsorship offers, interviews and most importantly wheeling in absolute smokeshows. This night in Hamilton was different though. After a win against the steelhawks Metcalf and a couple guys went to a bar where Metcalf laid eyes on Casey. Now Casey was the fiance of Dylan Keanrs Jr. and was out with her BFF's for her bachelorette party. Metcalf approached Casey and they hit it off. Metcalf, like the outsanding gentleman bought a round of drinks, and another, and another. Both of them were heavily intoxicated and one thing lead to another and they ended up back at Metcalf's hotel room. At this point Metcalf realized he was out of condoms but he decided to risk it anyway. T'was a fabulous night indeed and after that morning the two never spoke again, well alteast until 9 months later. Metcalf recieved a call from his bud Dylan, who was not happy. Dylan's and Casey's "child" looked a lot like Metcalf for some odd reason. Metcalf then realized what he had done. In an attempt to save their marriage and his friendship he came clean but it was to no avail. After the DNA tested showed it was Metcalf's kid the Kearns' gave up any custody of the child leaving Metcalf to raise it on his own.

Metcalf and Kearns after the incident

Tensions were high between Richard and Dylan for the remainder of their careers. Constantly jabbing at each other during games, none of which turned into an actual fight. It was a prolonged battle but eventually both of them simmered down. At this time RMK was 16 years old, and at this age would be the first time he met his Mom. Casey was also a hockey player and she was looking for a jump to the pros. Metcalf still felt sorry for that night and gave Casey a hefty contract to come play for his new team in Madrid. RMK would be there at the signing to finally meet his Mom while Metcalf and the Kearns' made amends. Dylan, Richard, and Casey all are now excited to see how RMK will do following in his dads footsteps.

Rise of a star
RMK began skating at the age of 3, and picked up his first hockey stick at the age of 4. The natural talent was already present. By age 5 He was already playing Squirts for his dad's hometown Lakeville, MN. He continued his dominance throughout youth hockey playing 1-2 levels up. At age 13 he decided to try out for his high school. Now a 7th grader playing Varsity hockey is unheard of in Minnesota but RMK was already 5'11" 160 pounds so he had the size and talent. He made the 2nd pairing for his high school team and by 9th grade was on the starting line.

RMK stepping up against EP

In the 10th grade he was named captain of the team but the team was on the decline. Players were leaving for different leagues and the core that stayed didn't really care about the sport. RMK started to become frustrated with the team and wanted to leave for the USHL. At the end of his sophmore year in high school after a disappointing exit from the section playoffs he got a call. He was offered a spot on the USNDTP (NTDP?) U-18 team. Once again RMK would be playing a couple levels up but he thrived in Ann Arbor. Th defensive dman who also has an unnatural talent at playmaking finished his playing career at Ann arbor by winning the 4-nations cup. He captained the team that year and rpoved to be an outstanding leader on and off the ice. He now looks to take his talents to the NWJHL and hopefully the SHL.

The Future
Filling out at 6'4" 215 pounds, he is bigger and taller than both his parents. The future looks bright for this Phenom. He has a lot of the same attributes as his Dad and the name to go with it. He has some big shoes to fill. This puck-moving blue-liner will most likely take the league by storm but will he go underrated like his dad? Only time will tell. But where will he go? Where does he want to play? Questions will become answers in the next segment; RMK: The Future
