The Timber Rookies
#1

The buzzer has sounded the season was officially over.  An early playoff exit with a team that had gone to the finals the previous year and now he sits in the locker room wondering what this will mean for this future. Nathan Thomas wakes up from his dream remembering the unfortunate ending of last season. Though it was a tough ending to a team that had a lot of potential and legitimate chance he knows he can’t dwell on the past and needs to look to the future. He makes his was to the Timber training camp for the final as it is the final year in the SMJHL. It brings him a smile to see that returning players Rikard Bjerg, Victor Ball, Walton Stromberg, Jesse Seppanen, and Alexander Oscarsson have also come back to make one final run at the championship with the Timber. They look out on the ice and see a promising site. The rookies have shown up and are ready to compete. There is no easing into it with this group. Right away you can tell there is something special with this group of players. They are HUNGERY to prove themselves and ready to do whatever it takes to make an impact for their new team. This team looks like they may just be able to come together and do something special. Preseason comes and we quickly realize that we are coming together as a team. Like any young team there are some ups and downs but they are able to battle them out and get ready for the long season to come.

This season will have its challenges it will be one of the longest season to date with 66 games. The Timber have a tough schedule to start off as well. But that is nothing to worry about this team will be able to pull through and show what they are made of. Though it is a tough start to the season they are able to battle every game and float in the .500 wining percent. Until the back to back with Kelowna where they win split the back to back with them and then it is like something just clicked for the growing trees. Going on an 8 game win streak. Pulling up the standings and being one of the top teams in the league. How did this happen how did we get here? Well typically you would say it is the great play from your special teams and capitalizing on the man advantage but their power play has not been that good, only capitalizing on few chances. So where is the success really coming from? In the end it would be what Maine’s strength would always be a complete team game and everyone buying in. The Veterans on the team have stepped up returning players like Jesse Seppanen, Stromberg, and Alex Oscarasson have lead the way for the Timber yet again but it is the rookies that have really stepped up their game and made major contributions that have finally given the timber an edge that has helped them find the success this season. Between the rookies they have totaled 24 goals and 33 assists this means the first year players are contributing 40% of the goal production for the Timber this year. So give some credit where it is due. The Timber rookies: Puddles O’Duck, Ellis McPickle, Don Reid, Dogwood Maple, Jonny Tsunami, and Fredrick Stefansson have truly stepped up this year and helping make a statement for the Timber on the ice. If these young cardiac kids are able to keep this pace the Timber will not only have a good year but hopefully be able to put together a playoff run.

Of course we are forgetting one of the most important people on the ice. Bigga Foryu has been the backstop for the team and has really stepped up his game after becoming the starter this season. With a 14-6-2 record with a 0.923 SV% he has been an anchor for the team and has a major part in the success. He is poised to have a great year with the Timber and should equally have some share in the success they are having. He had some big shoes to fill when Bloomy moved onto the SHL and so far he has filled them. He has been consistently on his game to help this team find their footing.

It is only 27 games into the 66 game season so we are not quiet halfway yet but it has been a very good season for the Timber so far and that deserved some recognition and to point out the rookie class for the Timber deserves some notes! SHL teams looking on and recruiting for this the S58 draft should be keeping an eye on these rookies and taking notes as they are some of the best rookies coming up and will make an impact on any team they sign with. Other players that have already been signed to their respected SHL teams are looking like they are ready to take that next step and make meaningful impacts for their teams as well. But of course they are looking to make a lasting mark for the Timber in the SMJHL first. Let’s keep this season rolling and continue the trend of being a force in the Eastern conference and league.

As always GO TIMBER! :maine:
