Once Friends, Now Rivals

Andrew Martin. Alex Winters. Linemates. Friends. Long ago, the two players played together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nati- wait, that’s not the right story. Hold on.

Andrew Martin and Alex Winters were friends and linemates at one point in time but the Fire Nation didn’t attack. Part of the same, potent S43 Class, Winters and Martin formed two parts of a deadly trio with Philip Winter for around a season and a half before everything fell apart. Once Kimmy left the team, underlying cracks in the friendship began to shine through. According to sources close to the players, Martin allegedly tried to cancel a joint appearance the two were going to make on a podcast, due to the fact that Winters had more points than him at the time the podcast was to be recorded. Additionally, Martin attempted to cancel Winters’ plane ticket for the Raptors’ latest road trip in a desperate attempt to keep him off the ice. Martin was unavailable to comment, but Whalers’ officials indicated that he and the team would not answer questions for this story.

On the flip side, Winters isn’t free from blame in this situation. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police confirmed to us here at STSN that a man was stopped entering the country with a police baton, 1000 CAD, and a note that appeared to be from Winters asking the man to break Martin’s kneecaps in order to prevent him from catching Winters in the point race. There was also an order allegedly placed from Winters IP address in downtown Denver that would have sent a glitter bomb to Martin, a devious device that would release spring loaded glitter pouches out into the room in which they were released. Glitter, of course, manages to get in everything and it would have been unlikely that Martin could have possibly cleaned it all up. Calls to Winters’ agent were left unanswered, but we can presume that he would deny the allegations leveled against him.

The two players went from great friends, players that worked well together on the ice and were putting up tons of points and had success against all teams to rivals, players that watch the stat sheet in an attempted to ensure their place above the other, and players that will continue to compete at the SMJHL level into their careers with Hamilton and Manhattan. Both players are fantastic players in their own right, one an elite level scorer with a high caliber shot and the other an elite playmaker with SHL caliber vision. Their rivalry will likely benefit both of their teams, each pushing themselves to be better than the other and earn more success both with a team and on a personal level. While the fans of each team and the organizations will be reluctant to stop the rivalry, this writer will reminisce about the days of the Winter – Martin – Winters line and the success that these one-time friends had and will continue to hope that they can one day bury the hatchet.

Let the record show that Winters tried to glitter bomb me first and I was just retaliating.
