S55 mPT #1 - Home Ice Advantage

In the SHL, the team with the biggest home advantage in New Orleans. New Orleans is clearly a party city and the people who live there and visit have also taken their fun to the arena which creates an incredible ambiance.

I think Newfoundland has the biggest home advantage in the SMJHL solely because of their goal horn. Can you imagine around 20k people all screaming HAHA DING DONG simultaneously every time they score a goal? That has to affect the opposing team's morale big time.

Hamilton has major home ice advantage that begins before the game even begins. As the other team begins traveling to the rink, fans begin clogging the right hand lane of all major roads in the city. Since passing of any kind is illegal in Hamilton, the away team is forced into major traffic delays and show up late for games, giving a major advantage to the Steelhawks.

By far the Kelowna Knights have the best home ice advantage in the SMJHL. Why? Well, the absence of an airport is a biggie, no railroad tracks have been laid there, a city wide bus ban in effect since 20 years and the surrounding terrain of mountains and forests are infested with bears, wolves and mountain lions. Most star player from opposing teams just wimp out and come down with some sort of illness we like to call the "wouldyadidya". God bless!

Colorado has the best Home Advantage. If the visiting team gets too rowdy they let the raptors loose on the ice, and well all know how clever they are. Would you check a raptor? I wouldn't that's for sure.

Texas has the best home ice advantage in the SHL because they literally make the opposing team practice and pre-game skate on their outside practice arena (state of the art I may add), which causes a hell of a lot of heat stroke.

Newfoundland definitely has home ice advantage, due in large part to the 'zerker fans. Like a raucous longhouse, they drown out any chance the opposing team have of communication. The longer the game goes, the louder they get.

The Maine Timber have by far the best home ice advantage. They have without a doubt the best fan base in the SJMHL. The fans get rowdy and stay that way the entire game! It helps get the timber fired up and we are seeing the results of that already this season with winning both the homes game this year!

Baltimore is a tough arena to play in, often visiting teams get their gear stolen or assaulted by soft-shell maryland blue crabs which throw old-bay in the visitor's eyes.

I think Maine has the best home ice advantage of any team. No one can figure out exactly where they are so the number of games they win by forfeit is pretty spectacular.

Winnipeg's home advantage is that there's nothing to do in Winnipeg so the other team is just dulled into a state of boredom and malaise and lack of will to live.

I believe the two teams with most signifcant home ice are actually the two I play for.

Carolina Kraken and New Orleans Specters. Reason being not every team is used to coming into town and playing hockey in soupy ass weather. Those lungs will be working hard when they have to sift through the moisture in the air to find one gasp of oxygen.

Newfoundland have the greatest home field advantage in the J right now for one reason: their embracing of the masterpiece ‘Jaja Ding Dong’. The fans and players want to hear it so badly when they are at home that they work extra hard to get the goal necessary for it to play once again. And, as other teams view it negatively - seeing it as an annoying distraction - when it plays 7 times a night during our dominant performances it would only server to drive the advantage home even further.

Of course I have to go for the Anchorage Armada, I detailed out last year the miles traveled by the Armada when having to play the other teams in the league. Nothing has really changed, and probably even more miles added with the addition of Nevada and Quebec City to the league. Last year the Armada traveled 91,633 miles total. An average of over 1800 miles per trip to play an opponent, and the shortest flight is just around 1300 miles from Vancouver. That's 3 hours and 18 minutes if they fly direct, let alone if they need to take public and transfer, which adds on another 2 hours or so.

Which means, rough estimate, that most other teams in the Western Conference will have to travel at least 5 hours, if not 7-8 just to get up to Anchorage to play a game. And if you're coming from Nevada or Anaheim and aren't used to the subzero temperatures during the winter, it's a drastic change to acclimate to the surrounding area. With that extended travel, temperature shock, and die hard fans in Anchorage, it's no surprise that Anchorage has one of the toughest barns to play in for visiting teams.

Edmonton has the largest home ice advantage. It is such a depressing city that no team enjoys going there. It sucks all will out of the visiting team, where they look forward to the bus ride back to the airport.
