S51 PT #3 - SHL Board Game
#31

Check out the latest SHL themed ripoff of your favorite childhood board game: The Game of SHLife!

In the original Game of Life, the game simulates a person's travels through his or her life, from college to retirement, with jobs, marriage, and possible children along the way. The SHL version is similar, but instead of spouses and children and all that boring bullshit, the game simulates a person's travels through his or her hockey career! A player spins the wheel and moves the number of spaces indicated with mandatory stops along the way for things like Draft Day, Signing a Contract, Trade Deadlines, and SHL Awards Shows. For each of these mandatory stops, players will draw a card and that card will determine the outcome of the stop. For example, when you stop on the Draft Day space, the card you draw will determine which team you're selected by. The Contract card you draw will determine how much money you make. The Trade Deadline card will determine whether you get traded or not and which team you go to, etc. The first player to reach retirement under the best circumstances (no injuries, lots of money and awards, etc) wins the game!

SHL Monopoly is an interesting take on the classic game with a bit of comedy and an SHL twist. You will find the classic layout with properties replaced by IIHF teams, SMJHL franchises, and the more valuable spaces filled by SHL teams. The comedy comes from what is in between these spaces. Roll the dice wrong and you could end up with a TPE audit resulting in going all the way back to square one. Rolled a 6? Oh no your bank account is in the negative and you now have to give up your best asset. Oh damn, looks like you've ended up on the space of a troll and will now be forcefully removed from the game for the next 2 weeks. Rolled a 5? Welp you are shit out of luck because now you've landed on an unwritten rule space and the rest of the players will get to decide a proper punishment. Play your cards right and win the game and you will replace Eggy as the new commissioner of the league.

I'm going to go with SHL Munchkin. For those of you that may not know what this is I'm not gonna bother explaining it as I'm lazy. Google it. But Munchkin already has a ton of themed games so going with SHL won't break the core gameplay. I'm not super creative when it comes to these but I can easily see some basic gear involved. There is already a concept of gear so we can just make some of those hockey typed (+2 Skates of <something witty>).

For class we can add some of the basic hockey roles. Maybe a goon card that can -5 from some opponents but makes you slow so run away isn't an option. Or a sniper option that allows you to draw an additional card.

As far as monsters go, you these will all be named after SHL HO. We all know that HO is the worst, so it's easy to plug them in. Eggy and SDCore can each be high level monsters while SMJHL HO can can be lower level cards.

If I was more witty I might actually try to build this as an expansion. But, alas, I am not.

Settlers of SHL is an interesting take on a resource gathering game and a luck based game. You start off as the GM of two teams, a juniors and a majors. These become important later on. The board upon opening is the layout of North America. The goal of the game is to farm the best players and increase your reputation as a team in order to get to the coveted challengers cup first and take victory. To do this you have to encircle certain states that have different resource production. These resources are the different stats for all of the players but limited to: Defense, Scoring, Passing, Checking, and Skating. Each of these stats can be used to recruit players from a vast pool of players who can then be sold back to the pool for money in order to build and develop new outreach tools. You have to manage your players effectively though because at the same time as managing these sellable contracts, you have to create a team of 5 players that will determine your on ice strength. When a person has successfully recruit 5 players then they may announce to the other players that they will be “making a run” at the Challenge Cup and this will signal that all other players have one last turn to make any last ditch attempts to buy, sell, and bolster their teams for the final competition. After every player has taken their final turn, total power of each player is counted to determine “seeds.”
What follows is each player rolls an amount of dice equal to their total power. On each player card next to their strength are faces of a die which indicate on what rolls that player scores a point. If a roll is matched on one of your defensive players then you can block that many shots from your opponent. This continues until 6 rounds are completed. Whoever scores the most goals in the matchup wins. Of course there is a lot of praying to Simon in this game as even the top seeded team can be defeated by a cohort of juniors.

It is not Secret Hitler anymore, instead the game is now Secret Enforcer. It is no secret that Enforcers are unwanted in the League, unfortunately, so this game players around those players hiding their player archetype from the rest. Everyone pretends to be a Sniper Forward, because those are the best of course, and instead of Liberal or Fascist policies, the tiles are now Goal or Fight. One player is secretly Tiger Williams who is the biggest Enforcer of them all, and instead of Chancellor and President the positions are Department of Player Safety Head and NHL Commissioner, respectively. Instead of a bullet in certain game mode versions it will be a Game Misconduct penalty that removes the player from the game. The Sniper Forwards win by getting enough goals that the lead becomes insurmountable, the Enforcers win by either getting enough fights that the opponents are physically unable to play or by getting Tiger Williams elected as DoPS Head

Although it is not exactly a board game, welcome to the SHLs version of Blackjack!

In a simple explanation, there are two types of players in Blackjack: the players and the dealer. In SHLs version of Blackjack, each team will have a seat at the table, designating one of their GMs to be their representative. In this, Simon T. is the dealer. In Blackjack, each player begins with two cards face-up, and the goal is to get as close to 21 as possible without going over, as if you go over, you "bust", and the dealer wins. In 21, you can "hit" as many times as you want to get as close to 21, and when you feel confident, you say stop. The dealer also has their own two cards and can do the same, but has the benefit of going last, so if you bust before the dealer, you lose.

The reason why I chose to do SHL Blackjack is because Simon T is a sneaky motherf*****r who often gives off random ass results to random ass teams every sim, similar to the dealer giving you random cards on every new hand. Additionally, you could think you have the dealer/Simon T figured out, until the dealer/Simon T proceeds to go 5-4-3-9 and take all your money.

Stay away from casinos, and stay away from Simon T.

So basically my board game just requires a poker deck and the custom board that looks like a pyramid. 4-8 players are needed for it. You pick the little icon of the team you want to play as. So a little Chief man for the Chiefs or a little plastic piece of poop for Hamilton for example. Once everyone has selected who they want to be you decide you who face off against in a march madness/FA Cup style knockout round.

It basically works like heads up poker. Whoever can make the best hand wins a point and is a best of 7. Like heads up poker it may not always be good to wait for incredibly strong cards and you do not lose anything for trying. Once we have a winner they go to the next round.

You repeat this moving your little piece up the board until one person is the winner! Then you can lift the little plastic championship you know all dumb as fuck kids will probably attempt to eat. The lack of 3+ disclaimer will capture the issues SHL sometimes has perfectly then. It is a simple and quick board game that I think will sell decently.

Okay so this game is kinda like the NHL where there are teams that compete for a cup, lets call this cup the Challenge Cup and its a one team thing that is one after a regular season. The regular season will be some strange number of games, something like 50ish, where you play teams some random number of times which does not really make much sense. Now the playoffs will have a cool format where there are actually 5 teams that make it and the first round is a play in much like baseball has, but rather than a single game we can use a best of 7. Playoffs from that point on will ne the same format as the NHL. Now for the important distinction, we will use a real simulation engine to help us get through hte games, something like Franchise Hockey Manager, where we wont have stupid things like a forum where you can pend 5 minutes and find that stats like checking and passing actually do not help you, but rather hurt you in the sim.

Most important aspect is there will be one team who the entire league hates for some reasons, likely some drama that is over played in the off season. For this aspect of the game i would prefer this not be my team again but that seems unlikely.

I made an SHL version of clue, where you have to figure out who did the penalty. Instead of someone being murdered, a random Manhattan Rage player was seen hitting a rookie in the head and he passed out on the ice, out cold. You're the refs and you gotta figure out who the heck did that. You didn't see a number but you're gonna go around different parts of the ice asking who dun it. Was it Barret McCarthy in faceoff circle with the hockey stick? Or was it Alex Winters in the crease with an elbow? You have to figure out which one of the six culprits on the ice then for Manhattan did it, it could even be the goalie Peter Larson don't rule him out. After you figure out who did it you have to go to the penalty box instead of the pool to guess and see if you're right by looking at the replay (a substitute for the envelope).

Shl the board game…

So I am going to try and build a shl board game based on a couple of other games I have tried and played. Actually. No I'm not.. I'm just going to straight up adapt dominion..

Dominion is a deck building game, where players compete over card options to add to their deck. These consist of cards that do things, resources for getting more cards and victory points that do nothing but are needed to win.

Adapting for the SHL. Each player is a general manager of a hockey team and is tasked with building an organisation (their deck of cards) capable of winning the most games over the course of the season (season ends when all the "reault" cards are exhausted).

There are still three sets of cards:

1.equipment/player cards these are the action/ deck engine cards, and also have game affecting modifiers on them.

2. Fan cards, with fans you have access to "money", these are your resources, and are used to buy equipment/player cards and result cards

3. Result cards! These are the results of matches played at the end of each round as well as any extras that have been acquired during the game.

Each round every player takes their turn, drawing cards, playing cards, acquiring new cards, in increasingly effective ways as the game goes on(as their team gets better resourced and has better players/equipment). So far for those that know dominion this is all sounding familiar. The change is at the end of each round there are a series of games, where players draw cards, use their hockey game modifier stats on any equipment/player cards they draw and matches are resolved between players, and result cards awarded accordingly to players.

Winner is the player with the most win result cards at the end of the season.

How dare you, i'd OBVIOUSLY beat him to death with my helmet like a Cleveland Browns player might
