#1

Detroit Beats Halifax in Hate-Filled Showdown

Falcons Detroit 3 - 2 Halifax  raiders

Scoring Summary

1st Period:
5:38 - Detroit Goal - Raino Kyllonen 8 (Kit Smeb 9) -  Falcons 1-0  raiders
Detroit's Raino Kyllonen won a face-off against Kobe Krisp in the Raiders zone following an icing, giving the Falcons possession in a dangerous position. Kyllonen played the puck to Kit Smeb, who immediately returned it to his center. Kyllonen made a move to split the defenders and beat Halifax's Mike McKorsy low to his stick side, tallying his eighth goal of the season.

8:08 - Detroit Goal - Josh Driver 4 (Espen Knutsen Jr. 7, Aaron Freakin Rome 12) -  Falcons 2-0  raiders
Once again, the Falcons took advantage of an offensive zone face-off after an icing by Halifax. This time, Espen Knutsen Jr. took the face-off and won it against Matt Kholin. Detroit cycled the puck around the perimeter before working it in to Josh Driver in the slot. Driver took the pass from Aaron Freakin Rome and passed it right back out to Knutsen Jr, who fired a slap shot on net. Driver was able to net his fourth career goal, deflecting Knutsen Jr.'s shot through McKorsy's five-hole.

10:10 - Halifax PP Goal - Perry Morgan 7 (Ricardo Cotalay 9, Jimmy Slothface 8) -  Falcons 2-1  raiders
Detroit's Aaron Freakin Rome took a minor penalty for elbowing at the 9:46 mark of the first period. The Raiders went to work on the power play, looking to take advantage of the opportunity to get back in the game. After Detroit managed to ice the puck and get a line change, Ricardo Cotalay retrieved the puck behind his own net. Cotalay passed to Troy Reynolds and just two passes later, Perry Morgan had the puck in the Falcons zone. Halifax missed the net on two quick attempts before Morgan had the puck back and was firing a third shot. Detroit's Miikka Salo blocked the shot, but the puck bounced kindly back to Morgan who was then able to beat Luke Derion for his seventh goal of the season.

2nd Period:
9:24 - Halifax Goal - Jimmy Slothface 3 (Perry Morgan 10, Andrej Doskocil 15) -  Falcons 2-2  raiders
Detroit was able to win yet another offensive zone face-off following an icing, but this time it was Halifax who made an opportunity out of it. Raino Kyllonen won the face-off and attempted to play the puck back to Jimmy Cahill. Andrej Doskocil jumped the pass and intercepted it, then passing it up to Perry Morgan in the neutral zone. Morgan carried the puck into the Falcons zone with Doskocil and Jimmy Slothface on the wings for a three on one against Detroit's Miikka Salo. Morgan slid the puck over to Doskocil, drawing Salo over to one side. Doskocil returned it to Morgan, who passed it over to Slothface and left Salo scrambling to get back over. Slothface fired a wrister high on the nearside and beat Luke Derion to tie the game.

9:44 - Detroit Goal - Franz Cooper 8 (Scott Niedermayer Jr. 3, Wibbly McButternutz 5) -  Falcons 3-2  raiders
It took just twenty seconds for Detroit to regain their lead. Following Halifax's goal, Kalvins Zvejnieks won the face-off for Detroit against Mr. Faceoffs. The Falcons quickly worked the puck into the Raiders zone, before a pass by Zvejnieks was intercepted by Dylan Karlsson. Karlsson's attempt to pass the puck out of the zone was then intercepted by Wibbly McButternutz, who passed to Franz Cooper. Cooper fired a shot that would miss the net and provide Scott Niedermayer Jr. with a rebound opportunity off the boards. His shot was blocked by Dominic Montgomery, the puck ricocheting off of his skate and onto the stick of Cooper. Cooper buried it behind Mike McKorsy for his eighth goal of the season.

3rd Period:

No Scoring
No goals were scored in the third, but there was plenty of action as the hatred felt between these two teams spilled over into a brawl. Frustrated to be losing to the lowly Falcons, Perry Morgan was called for boarding after a cheap shot on Miikka Salo. Jimmy Cahill came to Salo's aid, going after Morgan and earning himself a roughing call. Andrej Dockocil ended up with a high sticking call after he attempted to go after Cahill, and Salo was called for roughing after he then went after Doskocil. As all of this was happening, six pairs of gloves hit the ice and a donnybrook ensued. Tobias Viklund fought Raino Kyllonen, Mr. Faceoffs fought Marc Palicka, and Joseph Laraque fought Kit Smeb. Everyone landed some punches, but no one managed to gain an upper hand on their opponent. All three fights ended as stalemates, and a total of thirty-eight penalty minutes were handed out at the 11:37 mark of the third period.

Comment 2: Third Period Brawl
After Perry Morgan sent a Detroit player into the boards dangerously a huge brawl erupted between the two teams. Viklund stepped in to defend his teammate and started pushing Morgan, that's when Kyllonen came in and then all hell broke loose. We saw Viklund and Kyllonen fight with both players getting some good punches in but they just ended up running out of gas. At the same time, we had Mr. Faceoffs and Marc Palicka that just ended up being a quick wrestling match with neither player really able to land any good punches. And finally we had Laraque and Smeb go at it, two smaller players, but Smeb definitely the smaller of the two at only 5'7" and 150lbs. At the start, Smeb was just getting tossed around but managed to land a few good punches before the refs ended up stepping in. Overall, great fights from both teams with players you wouldn't expect to be fighting stepping up.

Comment 3: Three Stars
Third Star: Scott Niedermayer Jr. (DET)
Finishing the game with an assist a plus/minus of 2, a shot, a hit, and a block, Niedermayer Jr. didn't have an amazing game in any single category but had a well-rounded game that helped his team come out on top. Sometimes having a well-rounded game and doing the small things right is the most important thing you can do.

Second Star: Franz Cooper (DET)
After Halifax tied the game up midway through the second period Cooper scored the game-winning goal just 20 seconds later. Cooper finished the game with a goal, 3 shots, a hit, and plus/minus of 1. Cooper also played major minutes on both the powerplay and the penalty kill.

First Star: Josh Driver (DET)
The third liner didn't even get to play 10 minutes this game, but still managed to put up a great goal, a hit, and a blocked shot. Driver managed to help his team achieve victory in multiple ways and all in such a short period of time.

Comment #2:

The fights
These two teams don't like each other. That's one way to put it and probably the easiest way to describe how this game between Detroit and Halifax went. Combined the two teams had 58 penalty minutes and the majority of them (38) were handed out during a line brawl in the middle of the third period. At this point the game was pretty much decided already as no further goals were scored. Below you can see some material of how one of these fights went down. Overall there was no clear winner, but everything was a little chaotic too and it took the refs some time to sort everything out as there were not only the fights, but also several minor penalties. The penalty boxes were rather crowded after this.

Top 3 Gritters of the Game
1. Marc Palicka (DET) - For the first time in this stat series, we've had a brawl. A straight up brawl. They were draws, all the fights, but they were good. This man collected 5 PIMs with his fight, 2 more for roughing, and stood out otherwise, with 2 hits, a blocked shot, and going 4/7 on faceoffs.
2. Mr. Faceoffs (HAL) - Another fighter, the man also blocked a shot and went 13/27 on faceoffs, which is just shy of .500 ball.
3. Aaron Freakin' Rome (DET) - Okay, I'd told myself this was only going to fighters, but the rest of them didn't do anything other than their fight. Rome, on the other hand, collected 4 hits, 2 blocks, and 6 PIMs! Those penalties were for roughing, roughing, and elbowing, which is fantastic!
