Recently, two Calgary Dragons asked me to write a little scouting report for them. Whether it’s for leverage in contract discussions, to build hype around their legacy or to just fill their egos, I will always be happy to write about any Calgary Dragon. The first player who asked for a little piece on them is Joseph Weston.

Joseph Weston is a 6 foot 1, 202 pound winger from the United States. In 61 games played this season, he has 27 goals, 25 assist and is a tremendous +30 on the season. Tack on 63 shot blocks, and you got a winger who is willing to do anything for the team to win. Talking a deeper dive into his offence, he simply has an amazing hockey iq. His shooting range isn’t the best by any means, but his ability to get open and his vision for the entire offensive zone is simply incredible. He gets into the soft spots of the defence, and uses his great puck handling, passing and shooting accuracy to be a triple threat. He can dance around you, pass the puck to an open teammate’s tape or snipe it past the goalie when he’s within range.

Weston’s defensive abilities are pretty good all things considering. His iq in the offence zone translates into the defensive zone. He uses his smarts and overall hockey iq to be in the proper spots to retrieve the puck back and help keep the puck out of the net. While his stick checking and shot blocking need a little work to make it to the next level defensively, his checking and hockey smarts keep him reliable enough in the defensive zone. By no means is he a liability, but he is not known for his defence just yet.

The raw athleticism of Joseph Weston is just off the charts. He has a great first step, great turning ability and great top end speed. He’s not the best in any of those categories just yet, but still in the prime of his career, he has lots of time to tune it up just a bit to get to that next level. His balance, endurance and strength though are some of the best in the league, especially at his age. He will not be out muscled without a fight. He will do everything he can to stay on his feet, keep the puck himself and out muscle opposing players for the puck. He can be relied on for extended shifts at the end of the game if coaches want him out there without missing a step. He will give you 100% for heavy minutes if need be. This man has the tools to be a hall of famer, and he is definitely on the right track to get there.

Boris “The Beast” Poroshenko is a little older than Weston, but still wanted a bit of writing on himself. I think this one requested it more for his ego, cause everyone in the league knows this is one of the best two way players in the game today. Standing at 6 foot 3, 203 pounds, this guy is literally a beast. Taking a look at his stats for this season, he has 21 goals and 27 assists. The more mind boggling stat is he has 195 hits on the season on top of the offensive production. Poroshenko is the perfect grind it out guy for the Dragons. He will give you offensive production and wear down the opposing team in a game, or in a 7 game series. A great player, an maybe an even better playoff player. He has a great ability to get open and get into high danger scoring opportunities with his puck handling. He adds on a good shot and good passing ability to round up his offensive skill, but a little more work could be used on his range.

Poroshenko’s defensive ratings are pretty good all around. He has amazing checking ability, good defensive positioning, good stick checking and a great iq of the defensive zone. There is nothing Poroshenko does specifically that puts him in the top end of a specific category, but the fact that he does everything so well with no weakness makes him hard to game plan around. Offensive players gotta try a little bit of everything against Poroshenko, and hope one works on that particular night.

The athleticism of Poroshenko is honestly pretty good. He doesn’t have top end speed as some players, but he’s got enough to make a difference. Add on an above average foot step and quick cuts, he can keep up with some of the best skaters in the SHL. His strength, stamina and balance though gives him the huge advantage over some of the better pure skaters. Once he gets the puck, he will not give it up easily. Just like teammate Weston, he will out muscle you to keep the puck or get the puck from you. If you see this beast of a man coming at you, you better be prepared to get into a gritty battle with him for the puck.

In conclusion for Poroshenko, he is a gritty player who will force you to play tough every shift you’re on the ice against him. He will give you no shifts off and will punish you when given the opportunity. Whether that means punishing you on the score sheet or physically is up to him.
