Podan Podanović’s first team building experience of his career was not a typical or expected event, game, or exercise. Arriving directly from Plzeň, Czechia in a full American flag jump suit, chock full of beer and excitement, Podan’s enthusiasm was not met in kind by the benevolent Detroit TSA.

Expecting to suit up for the first Simulation Major Junior Hockey League preseason exhibition of the season, and of his career, later that night, Podan was held by US Customs and questioned about the contents of his carry on and checked baggage.

Arriving with a duffel full of his goalie gear and two rolling bags filled with Pilsner Urquell, the rookie spent 5 hours explaining to US Visa & Green Card agents why I.C.E. should be disbanded, eventually opening his bag and sharing a couple rounds with the boys (in blue).

Unfortunately, in a misunderstanding based on events from his childhood and upbringing, Podan did not realize that a sizable amount of beer and bringing no clothing or personal items did NOT qualify for entry into the country.

Fortunately, his teammates were able to come help get things sorted out. Yan Dolff, who also tried to enter the country under the pretense of bringing a sizable amount of beer and no clothing or personal items qualified you, was able to sort things out, and also have a few rounds with the boys (in blue), but unfortunately was not able to grant Podan his freedom until after game time.

Still - the experience was bonding for the team, as they helped Podan explain his misunderstanding. Look for chemistry with the other net minders this season, and Podan learns more about his cultural differences.

To welcome the new rookies to the team, the Anaheim Outlaws decided to host a game night for all their players. One of the rooms in stadium got converted to a little gaming pad, with a bunch of tables and differnt kinds of board games and cards. They also had a tv set up for online games like jackbox. Ryuuji Kawashima and Sekai Wollker had a big showdown going on in the jackbox whiplash games, swapping wins every round as they cranked out the funniest lines. Thomas Rose, Arturs Tumovs, Bob Duncan and John Donair were playing some poker and the stakes got a little high. Let's just say Tumovs had to take a cab home that night. Staff had ordered a bunch of pizzas and drift for everyone. Everyone got to know each other a little bit better and the teamwork was felt the next day in training. All in all the night was a great time for everyone involved.

Pasta the Turtle was very eager as he showed up the Newfoundland Berzerker training camp. Daunted and awed by the history of the franchise, he was quickly relieved when he saw a mural of Thatcher Demko on the wall in the locker room. This was an immediate signal to him that this was a club of substance and excellence. Training begun very quickly after arriving, where Pasta developed immediate chemistry with his defensive partner Sabarro Torretta. The chemistry culminated in a play during the scrimmage at the end of the day; Pasta dove accross the ice to block a shot, redirecting the puck onto Sabarro's stick. Sabarro went coast to coast depositing the puck in the opposite net.
After the boys had hit the shower, the rookies were shocked to see the locker room filled with bottles of rum, and an assortment of cod, at varying stages of life. This was a historic welcome to Newfoundland; a "Screech-in" where each player had to take a shot of rum, kiss a cod, and say a prayer to Demko.
God Bless the Zerkers!

The Anaheim Outlaws had the young team go on a team-building exercise over the past weekend so the players could get to know one another better.  The exercise was to go to into Disneyland blindfolded. One person, the sighted leader, had to lead the others on the path from the gates all the way to Space Mountain, on the ride and back again.  Bob Duncan was a good leader. So was Sekai Wiollker. Arty Tumovs led everyone to the tea cup ride instead but it was funny.

It definitely helped all the players to be aware and familiar of each others voices and who to be looking for when they are all calling the action on the ice.  Sometimes a player will need to change the rehearsed play if one is not in the right place.  Being vocal and loud and sure will help the guys to be a better team and work together. Also it helped to trust the voice that was calling out directions.  Fun was had by all and no one puked.  Many Mickey shakes were drunk.  It was a good day.

To build our team’s communication and cohesion, (and have a little fun), Richard Hogsworth (@LordBirdman) sent the Dino Gang to the local escape room. Angus McFife XVIII (@micool132), Jack Nishimori (@qWest), Russell Rattie (@alilSlug), Ruggs McOoooh (@Ruggsy), and myself were grouped together for 60 minutes, where we had to solve the mystery of the museum heist. The museum heist was no joke.

We began in a room that resembled a porch, where it took a few minutes before Nishimori discovered a key under a floorboard that put us into the main room. Our group immediately made the mistake of going our separate ways and ransacking the room. Without any organization, we failed to piece together a single clue that would advance us in the game.

With the clock ticking,  Ruggsy took charge and narrowed our focus to one task at a time. We searched the bookshelf where Russ found the code that unlocked a chest. The group moved to studying art around the room. Jack realized the black light found in the chest exposed hidden messages scattered throughout the art. McFife eventually found the level that lowered a key from the ceiling to put us in a hidden room containing the heisted items.

With less than five minutes on the clock, our group escaped our room. We took our victory photo and then retreated to the snack bar for popsicles. While enjoying the spoils of our success, we realized who the captain of the Season 58 Colorado Raptors needed to be. Ruggsy was our guy.

Shirakami Fubuki is a new player hailing from Japan so was really confused about what was happening when she was invited to a team's group training day. It was mainly stuff like training drills such as testing peoples ability at skating, shot and pass accuracy, and other such things.

She came across a fellow Japanese player there called Videl Valor who she recognised from playing together on the under 14s for Japan together. Valor had more of a grasp on the english language than Fubuki so she became a translator of sorts over the period of these sessions. One of the oddest things that was asked during theses was actually in a getting to know you event where they asked what is your favourite song to everyone. Fubuki, didn't fully understand the question but recognised the question was about songs so she started to sing "I'm Scatman" by Scatman John, after she was finished she looked really proud of herself but she recognised that the english language barrier could become a problem.

The Kraken's team building exercise was eventful, to say the very least.

The send downs and coaches told all of the rookies to pack up all of their equipment to go on a trip. They were then blindfolded and loaded onto a team bus. Fast forward, they stepped off the bus and found themselves in a winter wonderland. A few feet of snow and a frozen over lake. The rookies have no idea how they found snow in near Carolina, but there they are. They were told to get ready to skate and put their equipment on by the send downs, who were already dressing. They did what they were told and got on the ice, where they did various drills and teamwork exercises. For Blixtstrom, this was totally normal as he had played on OHRs his whole life, but the more inexperienced members struggled. At the end of the day, they felt a lot closer as a team and were excited to do it again the next year.

Having been signed instead of drafted, I missed the initial locker room bonding events, but was welcomed with open arms after signing with the Carolina Kraken. Despite my late entry into the team, I was quickly informed of the "Rookie Fight Club" that takes place within the Carolina locker room. I was definitely not expected to be in a fight club as soon as I joined a team, but I wound up getting ready to fight fellow free agent signing Harald Malmquist while everybody else cheered us on. He's a power forward and I haven't ever been much of a fighter but you gotta do what you gotta do in Rookie Fight Club. It was not pretty and I got destroyed pretty handily. At first I didn't think it was really important for rookies to fight in order to become a closer team but the whole team morale seemed to be boosted by it and I do feel a little closer to everybody else after that.

Coming back for his third season hyped up that Tom Brady won a 7th ring Noah was ready! He had no time to stop and needed to grind it out as he now only has 3 seasons to get picked up by a SHL team. Time is running short so Noah makes sure to work extra hard in practices but also tries to help his teammates as much as possible. To start the season it was mainly a bunch of team building excersies along the way with a bunch of skating drills trying to get you into shape for the season. Age kind of showed in this as the older players skated by the younger ones easily! After all the workouts they had today the team talked about how the offseason had gone and how crazy the Super Bowl was. Noah was excited to be back around his teammates and everyone went to dinner and all had a good time overall. Time to repeat the process tomorrow.
