SMJHL Teams TPE/Standing analysis part deux

CORRECT CALCULATIONS EDITION

We're now officially past the midway point of the season and we've had some shakeups in the standings. Quebec City has been knocked off from their comfortable perch atop the league for the first time this season, and there's a massive logjam in the middle of the pack as teams are vying for playoff position. Rookies are starting so make more of an impact, and several teams have picked up free agents and/or made trades. Here are the current standings and TPE totals per roster:

S58-59 cap: 350
S57 and under cap: 425

Kelowna is clicking at the right time, winning back to back games over QCC and cementing their place at the top in what could be a preview of the finals. The Knights don't seem to have much of a weakness and are primed to coast into the playoffs on a first round bye/home ice.

The Citadelles are in an unfamiliar position, having someone above them in the rankings for the first time all season. They are still comfortable favorites in their division to take a first round bye, but losing back to back games to the Knights has to be concerning. No reason to panic if you're a QCC fan yet, but the focus should be on a game plan to beat the Knights.

The boats are coming in a strong 3rd place. They're not a huge threat for first or second, but they boast a +23 goal differential and seem to be kicking it into high gear in the second half of the season. They seem to be getting solid contributions from their S59 draft class which can only mean good things for this season and beyond.

The Berserkers are coming in a quiet fourth place right behind the Armada. Newfoundland seems to be slipping a bit lately, they may just be having some bad puck luck but it could be cause for concern. They had a pretty strong grasp on third place last week, but are now stuck in the logjam with the rest of the middle teams.

The Falcons are turning it on at the right time, riding their defense on their way up the rankings. They were definitely underperforming earlier in the season, but they seem to have found their groove and expecting to go even higher.

The Raptors are a bit of a surprise. Yanno Rosejac has carried this team, as they are the only team in this 40+ point group with a negative goal differential (-7). The Raptors are going to need more offense to help out Yanno if they want to keep up with the rest of the pack here.

The Battleborn seem to be treading water lately, not necessarily doing bad but definitely not excelling. They're in a good spot to set themselves up for a playoff push, but they're going to need to find that on switch before then.

The Whalers are getting some solid contributions from their rookie class, including potential rookie of the year Alexis Saint-Michel with his 15 goals on the season to date. Vancouver also picked up late bloomer Makrus "The Tater" Jager, who hopes to make a solid impact as the team gears up for a surprising playoff push after a dismal start to the season.

Speaking of potential Rookie of the Year candidates, Lebron Brady is right there with Alexis Saint-Michel with his 23 points in his freshman year. The Scarecrows are terrifying on offense, they just have a hard time keeping the puck out of their own net and are constantly racing to outscore their opponents with mostly poor results (-30 goal differential). If the 'crows find some defense before the playoffs they can run with the best, if not they're gearing up for an early exit.

The Kraken is remaining mostly unreleased in Carolina this year, with a -62 goal differential to date. Carolina needs to find a way to coax more production out of their younger players, but it's obvious they're learning on the fly this year.

Anaheim is having troubles in net this year, having the most goals scored against them in the league with 166. They can score on par with most of the other teams having success this year, but their defense and netminders are very young and will need some time to get used to the speed of the game. They did make some waves this season by trading veteran Walter Burke to Maine f, perhaps signaling that they're already looking toward the future.

Maine is still in the same boat they were last week, making slow progress towards getting their young players experience. They were the other half of the Walter Burke trade, which is a bit puzzling since the team is very much not in a "win now" mode. Bigga Foryu continues to play out of his mind to give the Trees a chance, but they're just currently outclassed by other teams in the league. There is a lot to look forward to in Maine however, as multiple Timber defenders are showing up on league leaderboards for shot blocks.
