S66 SMJHL Draft Class | Full Rookie Season Ranking
#1

Now that season 66 is in the books, I thought this would be the perfect time to take a final look back at the S66 SMJHL Draft Class! For this final evaluation we'll be focusing on every pick in the first two rounds. In other words, picks 1 through 28 will each be graded to see how they performed in comparison to one another over the course of their entire rookie seasons. In addition, we'll also grade the GM's to see how their picks turned out in relation to the position from which they chose to select them.

To try and create a playing field as level as possible, we'll be using a metric that takes into account both offensive and defensive statistics so as to not favor one group over the other. That way we can try and give everyone a fair shake no matter how they chose to build their player. The power rating formula is as follows: (P(+/-)+/-)+HGR+FF% = RSPR. In plain English it's Points (plus or minus) plus or minus, plus Highest Game Rating plus Fenwick For Percentage equals Rookie Season Power Rating.

Points and plus/minus are fairly self explanatory, while highest game rating means the highest rating of the three, no matter if that's overall GR, offensive OGR, or defensive DGR. Last but not least, Fenwick For Percentage is an advanced stat similar to Corsi except it only calculates actual shots. Which means FF% represents the cumulative total of team shots for and against while any given player is on the ice.

With the preamble out of the way, let's begin with a graphical recap of the first two rounds:

Now then , let's move on to an analysis of where each pick placed in our power ratings. We do this to establish several things, such as which players moved up or dropped the most, and which GM's got the most value from their picks. (i.e. Who won the draft):

1) The number one pick D Jobin was taken by Anchorage and finished 26th. A drop of 25 points. Armada

2) Second overall was Theodor Larsson, selected by Yukon and finishing 3rd. A drop of just 1. Malamutes

3) The third pick went to Vancouver who choose Meta Knight. Meta finished 5th. A drop of 2. Whalers

4) Kelowna choose Jacques Hammer 4th overall. Hammer finished 25th for a drop of 19 points. Knights

5) The fifth pick went to Great Falls who opted for Bobby McGinnis.  Bobby came in at 17th for a drop of 12. Grizzlies

6) Jack St. Clair was drafted 6th by Quebec, and finished with the 9th best power rating. A drop of 3. Citadelles

7) 7th overall was Carolina's time to select Kyle Murray. Kyle finished 19th for a drop of 12. Kraken

8) Maine stepped up and claimed Pawter Meowski with the 8th pick. Pawter finished 11th for a drop of 3. Timber

9) Pick 9 was Hodor who headed off to Regina, Hodor placed 13th for a drop of 4. Elk

10) Completing the top ten was Isaac Forty-One, selected by Colorado and finishing 6th to move up 4! Raptors

11) Nevada tabbed Alexi Piastri 11th overall, only to see him finish first for a powerful gain of 10! Battleborn

12) The 12th pick went to Quebec who selected Tam Kove. Tam had a good season finishing 15th for a drop of 3. Citadelles

13) Newfoundland choose next, making Rasmus Bergling the 13th pick. Rasmus fell to 23rd for a drop of 10. Berserkers

14) Yukon selected Shea O'Connall 14th overall, with Shea going on to rank 10th for a gain of 4! Malamutes

15) Antonio Flusso was the 15th pick taken by Vancouver. Flusso ranks 8th for a big gain of 7! Whalers

16) The 16th selection went to Anchorage who picked Sean Davies. Sean finished 18th for a drop of 2. Armada

17) Jon Bell went 17th to Kelowna, but only managed to place 27th, resulting in a drop of 10. Knights

18) Great Falls made Neal Newland the 18th pick. Unfortunately Neal ranks 28th for a drop of 10. Grizzlies

19) Axel Kirby went 19th to Carolina before ranking 21st in the rookie class. A drop of just 2. Kraken

20) Brendan Laroux was chosen by Regina with the 20th pick. Brendan soared all the way to #4 for a huge gain of 16!  Elk

21) Twenty first was the landing spot for Bohdan Jarovsky and the Detroit Falcons. Bohdan ranks 16th for a gain of 5! Falcons

22) The Maine Timber grabbed Daniel Swift 22nd overall. Swift climbed the rankings to 7th for a giant gain of 15! Timber

23) Diablo Rose was chosen 23rd by St. Louis, before going on to rank 12th for a big gain of 11! Scarecrows

24) Newfoundland picked next and they made Brennan Kennedy III 24th overall. Brennan ranks 22nd for a gain of 2! Berserkers

25) Paul Peterson was drafted 25th by Nevada and went on to an amazing 2nd place finish for a whopping gain of 23! Battleborn

26) Pope Coswi Jr was taken 26th by Newfoundland and finished the year with a ranking of 24 for a gain of 2! Berserkers

27) Great Falls used their 27th pick on Terry Leviathon, who finished 20th for a substantial gain of 7! Grizzlies

28) The final pick of the 2nd round was Nevek Kove who was drafted to Quebec. Nevek ranks 14th for a huge gain of 14! Citadelles

- - -

So the biggest individual winners from the S66  draft are as follows:

11) Pope Coswi Jr +2 - Berserkers

Everyone else was a net drop.

- - -

So now we arrive at the moment we've all been waiting for. Namely who won the draft? (a.k.a. GM/Team scores). The final tally is as follows:

1) Battleborn leads the way with a whopping +33. Somebody give these folks a raise!

2) Timber comes in tied for 2nd at +12. I'm looking at you @SouthPaw and @CementHands!

2) Elk are fit to be tied at +12!

4) Scarecrows crack the top 4 with a +11!

5) Citadelles are a top five rated front office! +8

6) Falcons only had one pick, but they made it count! +5

6) Whalers brought home a big catch at +5!

8) Raptors also with just one pick, but choose wisely! +4

9) Malamutes produced a positive effort! +3

10) Berserkers will have to settle for -6.

11) Kraken struggled a bit at -14.

12) Grizzlies clawed their way to -15.

13) Armada the Boats capsized down to -27.

14) Knights at the bottom of the pack. -29.

Sorry, my bad. I wasn't sure where to find all the undrafted info. If someone could point me in the right direction I'd be happy to include them. Smile
