Write your predictions for this year's IIHF tournament or WJC! Tell me about your team! How far do you realistically expect to go this year? What nations do you want to match up against, and which do you dread?

Like always, I expect big nations to succeed. Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia and USA are powerhouses which should dominate IIHF event year after year because hockey culture is there something else than in for example in Japan, Great Britain, Ireland, Austria, Norway or Latvia. Canada and Norway dominated round robin last year and I expect them to have now even more success in the playoffs too. I also expect that Germany's hockey will continue its rising season after season even though two seasons ago they were already in a bronze medal game and repeated it last season. On the other hand success of other rising hockey nation Latvia was a positive surprise. Germany is lead in the attack by Red Kirkby who is a good hockey player as are defenders Jonas Kahnwald and Kermit Murphy. From Nordic countries I expect that Finland will again strong this year because goalie tandem Smith-Carpet is elite even though Carpet is now younger version and they have good forward group. They are ready to win again like on season 62 and S64 and S66. When it comes to Russia, I expect the same. They are way too big hockey nation to underperform again which means everything lower than achieving a gold medal.

How does your player feel about playing against SHL teammates in the IIHF? Do you ease up on your hits, or do you go harder? Do you grin at each other across the ice, or is this a point of national pride?

William Salming loves to play against his Seattle teammates. Speaking generally, he is a big fan of international hockey and playing against own teammates is even more fun. Especially against his linemates in Seattle, Max Manning and Vaseline Podcalzone, Salming has some nice battles in the corners and near the boards. He also tries to shut them down extremely well when they are at the same time on the ice. Salming also likes to play against UK because there are lots of his friends too like Daryl Urquhart and Landon Fischermann. Against Sweden Salming focuses in scoring because goalie of that country is Seattle's number one guy Willie Miller. Behind him William likes to scory very much and has succeeded in it a couple of times. Salming plays never without attitude but you have to admit that against his teammates he goes even harder in his hits because he is so competitive two-way winger. Wearing a lion jersey is a huge proud for him and he wants to serve it well.

Buffalo hasn't put up the same offensive numbers as the Aurora, but they haven't needed to. Their points leader in Konstantin Selich has 19 points in 16 playoff games, an impressive number in its own right, but the Stampede's hero has been Casey Fantobens, their brick wall with a casual *0.929* save percentage over the playoffs so far. In a battle of unbelievable offense vs the stoutest playoff defense this league has seen in a while, does Buffalo have what it takes to bring home the trophy and send the Aurora back to Winnipeg yet again?

Defense wins championships.  Winnipeg has put up some amazing numbers and they should be proud, and they have won a lot of games leading up to and through the playoffs.  But in the end there is an old saying, defense wins championships, and it is more often than not proven to be true.

But it goes beyond just stopping a puck or blocking a shot.  When a goalie is on fire and comes into a series hot, it plays games with opposing forwards minds.  They start to believe the goalie can’t be scored upon.  Once that happens their shots come in with less velocity, they second guess when to shoot and typically pass more often.  All Buffalo needs is a few timely saves to start the series and it is already all over.

This series will not be decided by who will score more goals…well it will, but it will be more about which goalie and defense will hold back the most shots and goals.  Casey Fantobens has become an impregnable brick wall, and as such has already won the cup for the Buffalo Stampede.

Continuing an emergent tradition: this year's final features a god-bear of cosmic wind facing an unfamiliar rival on a familiar battleground: this year, the great glowing north faces a furious herd of buffalo! Tell me who wins and why! The arena and the rules of the fight can be whatever you desire. Get creative!

The unease peace between the kingdom of Buffalo and the kingdom of Winnipeg has finally broken. Winnipeg’s Grand Duke Cardinal has finally heard from it’s god and it has decreed war, breaking a 100 year old treaty between the two nations! They march across their frozen wasteland 10,000 priests strong heading to the war grounds. Banners whipping in the wind as they march on down to Buffalo. Buffalo’s warrior King has heard rumors from his spies in Winnipeg and knowing he would have a month to prepare, he setups up his horde of war beasts and marches them out 1000 strong.

They meet on the boarder on the great plains of Manitoba. The Grand Duke Curses, he had hoped to find a forest or mountain area to due battle to give his chosen the advantage. The great king laughs on top his great beast. “Last chance to turn around ‘old friend’ take your priests and march home, all can be forgiven with a higher tithe to pay.” The King announces.

The Grand Duke looks at his faithful followers and smiles. “As long as we stand our god stands, now chant brothers, pray for our god and he shall come to vanquish our foes!” With the Grand Dukes words the 10,000 priests start to chant, a light emerges from the heavens and a glowing Polar Bear descends to the battlefield.

The King looks to his army, “Attack!” He yells. The 1000 rush the great beast riding on the back of Buffalo. Spears drawn the aim to mow down a 40 foot glowing polar bear god.

The first row rushes in and the bear swats them aside with no effort at all and 50 Buffalo and riders are taken out of commission. The Bear roars and an icey blast shoots through the middle of the line freezing enemies in an icy tomb.

The Grand Duke laughs, “NOTHING CAN STOP OUR GOD AS LONG AS WE STAND! KEEP PRAYING BROTHERS THIS BATTLE IS ALREADY OVER!”

The King during the commotion with his honor guard made their way around the battlefield, 50 men strong. They worked their way around behind the Grand Duke and his priests. The priests too focused on their prayers the Grand Duke and God focused on the fight. The King and his men now behind the Grand Duke’s army rush in with weapons drawn and plow over the priests running them through with spear and sword. Arms fly, heads roll and as priest become aware of the surprise attack the chants change to screams. The great bear flickers as believers begin to be silenced. The Grand Duke turns in time to see the King come charging down with his spear and run him through the chest. The bear bellows in agony as the Grand Duke falls.

An hour later the priests heave either been captured or scattered running for safety, they are unarmed and unable to match forces with the warriors and their beasts. The King and his men say a prayer for their fallen, 377 men and 289 beasts laid down their lives this day for the King and the Kingdom of Buffalo. 3788 priest have also paid the price for their foolish belief and breaking the treaty. The King prepares an envoy with the Grand Duke’s head as it is now time to pick the spoils of war from Winnipeg and lay claim to his new land.

Now at 46 passes and counting

I got curious about this and started counting numbers.

not all of them have claimed it, but it should be 68 GMs who can claim it. There are other roles that get a CW pass as well, but there is a lot of overlap because many people do multiple jobs that get a CW pass (like Frenchie, who is a J GM, SHL HO, and recruitment head, but only claiming one of those). For example, SHL HO gets it, but only five of us wouldn't already be getting a pass from being J GMs anyway. SMJHL HO gets it, but only six of them aren't also SHL HO or SHL GMs. Simmers get it, but only six of them aren't also HO or GMs (in the league they don't sim in). Fileworkers and developers also get it, and I haven't counted them (or the overlap between that and GM/Simmer/developer/etc) but all in all, unless I'm forgetting a large chunk of people, it's less than 100 people. The average activity check is floating around 350 people or so these days, so it's probably a little less than or around 30% of the league claiming a pass for this.
