Playoff Squidcap - Round 2

Welcome back to the second edition of the Playoff Squidcaps, the recap for each round where I let you know what happened in this playoff round in case you didn't tune in to every game for every round. This week we are back for a recap of Round 2, featuring the top seeded teams that had a first round bye coming in against the round 1 winners.


Falcons  Detroit Falcons vs Maine Timber  Timber

Result: Maine wins in 4 games

After beating out the Quebec City Citadelles in round 1, the Falcon's good luck tailed off this series and resulted in a sweep for Maine. Maine was the second place team in the regular season and made sure to show the Falcon's why they were. Scoring kicked off 8 minutes into the first period of game 1, with Jordan Thompson scoring for the Timber to push Maine to an early lead. With 2:14 seconds left in the first period Maxwell King II scored for the timber, this would set off a run of 4 goals in 1:31 seconds for Maine, with goals coming from Swayne Swanson, Julian Kuznatsov and Logan Webb. The Timber would run away with this game, winning 9-1 with shots being 58-17 in their favour.  Logan Webb and Shootin Blanks would pop off with 4 points each for the Timber. It was closer in game 2, with Maine winning 5-1 and 6 of Maine's players notching 2 points each. The Falcons were outshot 31-45 this game as well, and despite Wayne Holloway turning away 40 shots, the Falcons fell in their second straight game. In game 3 another dominant performance  was put on by Maine, with Gewmba Stolemamoney putting up his first shutout of the playoffs with 20 saves. Ace Guilded put up the first 2 goals for the Timber and Dwayne Swanson, Mick Mayhem, Icee Richardson had 2 points each as well. Entering game 4 the Timber had outscored Detroit 19-2 in the series so far. Maine would put on another great performance outshooting Detroit 47-18, as they clinch up the series with a 4-2 win.  Cameron Dallas would open the scoring, followed up by Shootin Blanks, then Dallas, then Blanks again. Dallas ended with the game winning goal and 2 points, while Blanks had 2 goals and an assist in order to help bring the sweep through Detroit.

The Maine Timber will be challenged with a matchup against the only team that finished above them, the Vancouver Whalers.

Berserkers  Newfoundland Berserkers vs Regina Elk  Elk

Result: Newfoundland wins in 6 games

After a long 7 game series between Newfoundland and St. Louis, Newfoundland knocks out the Regina Elk in 6 games. Game 1 was a big  4-2 win for Newfoundland, putting them at their fourth win in a row.  Dan Craig continued his hot streak and scored 2 goals including the game winner, and Cracker Pizza put up 2 points each Game 2 swung in favor of the Regina Elk with a 7-3 win, outshooting their opposition 49-31. The game winner came from none other than Mercedes Bayle, who put up a 3 point night with 1 goal and 2 assists for the Elk.  A multi-point night from Regina's Adrians Skalbergs, Rowan O'Beirne and Guy Incognito were able to push Regina up to 7 goals on the night. Despite a 3 point performance from Newfoundland's defender Adelbert Steiner, they came up short.  Regina won back to back games with a 5-3 win in Game 3, in an evenly matched game where shots were 36-35 in favour of the Berserkers. Ally Mathieson had a good game for the Elk, turning away 33/36 shots. Rowan O'Beirne led the way on offense for Regina, with 1 goal and 2 assists. Game 4 would see Newfoundland bounce back with a 7-4 win, despite being outshot 45-35. Ben Harrison had 41 saves for the Berserkers with a .910 save percentage to pick up his 7th win in the playoffs. A big 4 point night from Erik Erikson and Sad Ketchup let the Elk take this handily. Erikson had the game winner to go along with his hat trick, in which Ketchup had an assist on every Erikson goal. Newfoundland would seize the opportunity to eliminate Regina in game 6, winning 6-3 while outshooting them 46-40.  Rowan O'Beirne scored twice for Regina but after gaining a 2-0 lead 16 seconds into the second period, Newfoundland would go on to score 6 straight goals. Ben Harrison had 37 saves and a .930 save percentage for the Berserkers and was stellar in the team's win. A strong defensive game from Ondrej von Stoodrick and Temetrius Jamel "Ja" Morant Wick was able to lock down the win after Entropy Sanchez's 3 point night put Newfoundland ahead. Newfoundland has been able to get contributions from everyone on the roster during this playoff run so far, with 7 players having 2+ points in the series clinching game.

Newfoundland moves on after a big series win against Regina, as the Berserkers gear up to face the Yukon Malamutes.


Grizzlies  Great Falls Grizzlies vs Vancouver Whalers  Whalers

Result: Vancouver wins in 7 games

After a stunning 7 game upset against the 3rd best regular season team, Great Falls came into the series facing the best regular season team; the Vancouver Whalers. After an exciting 7 game series yet again, Vancouver would come out on top this time. Game 1 started off quickly with 3 first period goals for Great Falls, before Inactive Forever struck back for Vancouver in the second period. Great Falls would hang on for the  4-1 win, with Bryson Basham, Peanut, and Jani Manty each chipping in 2 points. Beau Kavanagh put up another crazy game with a .960 save percentage with 25 saves as the Grizzlies took game 1. A back and forth game, with Great Falls striking first with a goal from Andre Latreille, the teams would alternate goals into the third period with a 2-2 tie entering the final 10 minutes of the 3rd period. Austin Dodd would be the hero for the Grizzlies, with a goal coming with 4:58 left in regulation, assisted by Strongstick and Poiklm these three combined for the second goal for the Grizzlies and came up clutch to put together the game winner as well. Game 3 was a dominant win from the Grizzlies, winning 6-1 and holding the Whalers to only 19 shots. Andren Akerson would have the game winner, with 5 players putting up 2 points for the Grizzlies. Peanut played well on defense for the club, putting up an 89 DGR with 1 takeaway in 24 minutes of icetime. Entering game 4 down 3-0 in the series lit a fire under the Whalers who went down 3-1 in the first period. Just 2 minutes into the second period the Whalers went down 4-2, before Thomas Liebold and Jaden Tanner potted back to back goals to tie it 4-4. Poiklm scored for Great Falls with just half of the game left to play, and it remained 5-4 for GFG until with only 14 minutes left Colt Fox tied the game for the Whalers. The game would remain tied even after 2 Vancouver penalties late in the third period, sending us off to Overtime which would end 4 minutes in from RD Scott Seitz's first goal of the playoffs. Game 5 would see the Whalers build off of the late game heroics of game 4 with a 4-1 win. Scott Seitz and Wehadababyitsaboy each had a solid game on defense with a DGR of 83 for both of them. Erno Joonas and Lily Jin Morrow each had 1 goal and 1 assist to lead the team offensively, as Scary Jerry backstopped the team with 21/22 saves and a .960 save percentage. Game 6 was another close game, with Vancouver edging out the win with a score of 4-3.  A 2-2 tie after 2 periods of play, Brandon Strongstick would push Great Falls out to a lead 4 minutes into the 3rd period. Ryan Quintana-Green would step up offensively with the tying goal with 10 minutes to play in the third, adding onto his great 83 DGR. Colt Fox would pot the game winning goal 2 minutes after Quintana-Green tied the game up. Erno Joonas had 3 points on the night, getting an assist on the first 3 goals, forcing a Game 7 after being down 3-0 earlier in the series. Game 7 would be another tight game, with Vancouver striking twice in the first period with goals from Inactive Forever and Aumy Junior II. Great Falls wouldn't let that slide though and struck back with 2 goals in the second period, coming from Poiklm with their 7th goal of the playoffs, and Levin Schattenaxt who netted their 13th point of the playoffs. The game winner for Vancouver would come from Johnny Fourstar 8 minutes into the third period being assisted by Inactive Forever and Thomas Liebold, with Lily Jin Morrow adding in an empty net goal to lock up the reverse sweep for the Whalers.

After a stunning run from the Great Falls Grizzlies, Vancouver takes them out with a reverse sweep and moves on to face the second best team in the league, the Maine Timber.

Battleborn  Nevada Battleborn vs Yukon Malamutes  Malamutes

Result: Yukon wins in 7 games

A hard fought series between the two teams saw the Yukon prevent the reverse sweep and win in 7 games over the Nevada Battleborn. Game 1 had Thomas Sawschuk, Brock Samson, and Sergey Ivanov combine for 2 first period goals for Nevada, with Newton Campbell and Jaxson Reaper potting 2 in response for the Malamutes. Colin Zwiers would get one goal at the end of the second to gain the lead for Nevada before Yukon's Theodore Svatos would tie it 7 minutes into the third period. Shevchenko would add in the game winner 3 minutes later, with an empty net goal coming from Fred Bread. A two point night from Fred Bread and The Great Khali as well as a stellar defensive performance from Furious Chicken with a 95 DGR and 5 takeaways was enough to lead the Malamutes to a 5-3 win in game 1. The second game of the series  ended 5-2 for the Yukon, with Tony Blundetto opening the scoring 1 minute into the first period. Svatos and Bobby Tkachuky would score twice more before getting an answer from Nevada, who scored twice in the second period with goals from Sawschuk and Shnopple Lopple. Tony Blundetto would score again to make the lead 4-2 with 4 minutes left in the third, and Fred Bread potted another empty net goal to cap the game off 5-2. Blundetto had 2 goals and 1 assist as the rookie led the team to a hard fought win over the Battleborn. Kristian Seppanen was solid for the Malamutes on defense with an 88 DGR and 1 takeaway. I-Stir MyPudding was phenomenal on defense for the Battleborn with a 99 DGR! They blocked 6 shots and had 1 takeaway while finishing as a +1 with 22:20 TOI. Game 3 was a 3-1 goaltending duel between Just Perfection and Jim Wen, with Wen clutching up in this game for the Yukon. Just Perfection had 29 saves with a .940 save percentage for Nevada, and Wen had 29 saves and a .970 save percentage. I-Stir MyPudding opened the scoring with a goal 3 minutes into the first period for Nevada before Theodore Svatos scored for the Yukon 7 minutes into the second period. Bobby Tkachuky would score 11 minutes into the 3rd period for the Malamutes, securing the game winning powerplay goal. Squidwardo Tentacles would notch an empty net goal as the Yukon go up 3-0 in the series. Kristian Seppanen and Furious Chicken each had 4 blocked shots for the Yukon, with  DGRs of 85 and 82. Game 4 would see Nevada battle back hard with a 6-2 win, outshooting Yukon 40-27. A big game from Just Perfection saw them make 25 saves and post a .930 save percentage to backstop Nevada to their first win of the second round. Cal Juice scored first for Nevada, followed by Bobby Tkachuky before Nevada scored 5 unanswered goals to dominate the game. Cal Juice had 2 goals and an assist in the win, with Carl Hatchimal putting up 3 assists. Jake Berry had the game winning goal as well as an assist, and I-Stir MyPudding continued their great defensive play with a 91 DGR  with 3 takeaways and an assist.  Game 5 went the same way, with Nevada scoring 6 goals again enroute to a 6-3 win. With the Battleborn outshooting the Malamutes 37-23, Nevada's big players came out and dominated the game. Aksel VINSen had 3 points with 2 assists on the top line, with Thomas Sawschuk putting up 2 goals and 2 assists, and their right winger Brock Samson also put up 1 goal and 3 assists as they shut down the Malamutes and scored in bunches. Aksel VINSen scored first, followed up by Yukon's Jordan Tanner and Florian Soderberg-Motyla before Brock Samson tied it for Nevada. Sawschuk scored twice, grabbing the game winning goal as Nevada forced the series to 3-2. Nevada would quickly make the series 3-3 and force a game 7 after a 5-2 win in game 6, outshooting Yukon 36-22. Sergey Ivanov scored 2 minutes into the game to push Nevada in front, before Squidwardo Tentacles potted a short handed goal 5 minutes later to tie the game. Jake Berry had the game winner again, notching 2 late first period goals, with the 3rd being the winner. Furious Chicken would chip in with another goal for the Mutes but VINSen and Horror would lock it up for the Battleborn and force game 7. Shnopple Lopple locked down on defense in game 6 for Nevada, with a 99 DGR to go along with 3 blocked shots and 4 takeaways in 25:20 TOI. Game 7 was back in the Yukon, with the Malamutes outshooting the Battleborn  44-28 and winning 6-2. Jaxson Reaper scored first, 7 minutes into the first period followed up by Theodore Svatos scoring 1 minute into period 2. Thomas Sawschuk opened the scoring for Nevada 4 minutes into the second period with a powerplay goal from Lopple and MyPudding. Langston Hardison-Laurent scored 2 minutes later with what would be the game winning goal, from Fred Bread and Vyacheslav Shevchenko. Squidwardo Tentacles would score on the powerplay 3 minutes later, before Sawschuk scored his second of the game with 5 minutes remaining in the second. The third period saw Fred Bread score an empty net goal and Shevchenko scoring with 8 seconds left to push the Yukon to the semifinals. A solid defensive game from the Mutes saw The Great Khali put up 3 takeaways and a DGR of 87, same as defense partner Newton Campbell who had 2 blocks and 2 takeaways. Jordan Tanner played great as a two way forward, putting up a 90 DGR with 5 blocked shots and 1 takeaway.

The Malamutes move on after Nevada battled back with 3 straight wins and forced a game 7, the Yukon will go on to face Newfoundland in the next round.
