S75 SMJHL PT #2 - Season Preview Due: Sunday, February 18th @ 11:59 PM PST
#16

The Whalers are a young team, with a young GM, but with a ton of potential for development from a few stars, as well as some new draftees that really have the chance to elevate the back end of the roster. While they have started the season slow, look for continued progress throughout the season for this young group as the bigger plan from the newly named GM begins to come into focus. A few players do watch out for this season are:

Niclas Wastlund, LW
One of the SHL’s most exciting young prospects, expect Wastlund to tear up the juniors this year as one of the leagues most lethal wingers at getting open. His vision for the game is second to none, and it will translate to goals all season long.

GM’s Son, C
Arguably the team’s best player when it comes to playing the puck and breaking into the zone, Son is a key piece of the Whalers team this season. One of the best face off takers in the league, he plays a key role in maintaining possession and setting up his wingers in transition or once in the zone for the one timers.

Samuel Jalopski, C/RD
A center playing on the third defensive after recently having his rights acquired by Vancouver, Jalopski brings a unique skillset to team when he is on the ice. Expect to see Jalopski taking some face offs this year, as well as reaching the back of the net more than just a few times. However his defense should still be a key part of his game that will grow as the season progresses.

Detroit has a lot to live up to winning the last cup was the start of the Detroit legacy. While everyone on the team is simply amazing three particular players stand out:

Anastasia Soderstrom: Is a rookie goalie with a lot to prove. They are the main goalie on the team and have proven to be an asset for defending the Falcon nest. They deflect pucks and keep them from hitting the back of the net. I am excited to grow with Anastasia Soderstrom on my team over the next few seasons.

MAREK CARDA: Is leading our team in goals. Marek has been a large part of us being able to close out games by scoring more goals into the enemy net. In offensive matchups being able to score more than the opposing team is crucial. It is a great fall back as Anastasia is getting grounded.

Brayden Point: Natural that I speak about Brayden Point. He is still one of the most active rookies (being one of the first class of S76 to complete the rookie tasks, write 2 deep dives, and general discord/forum activity. He also  scored a hattrick.

Detroit we have big plans in store for you

For any team looking to bolster their defense Kristians Mikelis could be their guy. This left defenseman from Latvia is looking to make an impact at the junior level in order to get drafted into the SHL. Kristians is going to be primarily modeled after NHL defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. This means building a solid skillset of defense and skating while excelling on the offensive side of the ice. For now, I'm sure many SMJHL teams could use a solid defenseman to fill out their third line. Down the line, I believe this could easily make Kristians a first pairing defenseman, who would pair well with either an offensive defenseman or defensive defenseman. Even another two-way defenseman could pair well with Kristians! Lastly, but definitely not least Kristians looks to bring an elite locker presence to a lucky team. They understand that working to improve their skillset is very important, but they also understand that making friends along the way is crucial for building chemistry and fostering team success. To wrap things up, Kristians skillset brings a lot to the table and to say that he could be a teams "key to success" definitely isn't an overstatement.

Our team is the scarecrows and being honest we are team of rookies and almost rookies. BUT we are guaranteed a playoff spot and VAN is a dead team being honest so our keys of success can be anyone but I am guessing it will be. Wyhatt King because he is a key center. Alexa Johansen is our captain should be a key and our young goaltending should help a lot being Kris. Our goal as a team is simple win a playoff game. We are a team full of rookies and our goal should be simple to show progress winning a single playoff game would be a great year one goal year 2 goal is going to be to win a playoff series and year 3 is to win the whole thing. But this year we focus on getting TPE getting our chemistry in the locker room and establishing our roles for the future.

The Nevada Battleborn aren't poised to be breaking the doors off of the league this year, but that's okay. With an organizational commitment to building through youth, they'll be an absolute force in a season or two. That doesn't mean there's nothing to gain from this season though, as Nevada can still look at the aforementioned youth to develop during the year and start making a real difference towards the end. The top line of Cal Juice, Literally Wizard, and Jim Wieners is something that the Battleborn will really look at to take meaningful steps forward through the season. The top pair of Caspian Leevi and Sergey Ivanov will also be very important for the team in the rest of the season. This season isn't as much about winning as it as about preparing to win, and as long as the young depth through the lineup continues to develop they'll put themselves in a good spot to do so.

Going into the S75 season for the Nevada Battleborn was a ready for what would most likely be a very rough season. It is known all through out the SMJHL that Nevada would be heading into a rebuild and that is exactly how this season has started. Even with the tough start though there have been some bright spots as far as veterans and rookies for the Battleborn. Left Wing Cal Juice, SHL 74 draft, has been the leader of this team so far. Juice is currently leading the Battleborn in goals and tied with the points lead through 31 games with Sophmore Literally Wizard. Wizard has also been a steadying factor for this Nevada team so far this season, who shares the points league with Juice at 32 points. The last part of that big first line has been Jim Wieners, the rookie who is surprising the SMJHL with 27 points of his own and will be a big part of the Nevada Battleborn's future for the next few

There are three key components to the success of the Carolina Kraken this season:

1. Betzee Nickelback - Betzee has been an anchor of this forward core for two seasons now and has generated mixed results. At her best she's a top player in the league, but that best - like most Carolina products these days - is inconsistent as they come. In order for Carolina to take the next step, their captain and top line center for multiple seasons, is going to need to take the next step as well.

2/3. Ongo Gablogian and Olivija Agate - The dynamic rookie pair put up respectable numbers their first season in the league, but now the training wheels are fully off. Both Os have taken off developmentally, and they're going to be massively relied on with the departure of standouts Westley Kirkpatrick and Lazer Gato, the top pairing for multiple seasons before them. They have the talent to fill those shoes, but they're leading a young and very inexperienced defensive six.

The SMJHL preseason is a lot like the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?. The games are made up and the points don't matter.

It's never wise to put too much into preseason games, no matter the sport or the league. How many times has a random player gone off and quickly anointed as THE player to watch. "Player X has scored x amount of goals in the preseason. He's going to bust out this year!". Everyone scrambles to their fantasy teams and tries to pick him up off waivers or trade for this new miracle player. And once the regular season hits, what happens? Player X fades away into obscurity. Year in, year out. The good ol' preseason.

Regardless, the preseason games must be played. If anything, it's a good exercise for players to shake off the rust they've accumulated over the offseason and get their game back in form before the games that really matter take place.

Now, with all of this in the back of our minds, here's a few players to keep tabs on for the Anchorage Armada as we get set for regular season action:

1. Ubba Ludbrok - C (7GP, 8-8-16): Preseason games or not, all eyes were going to be focused on Ludbrok going into this season. Entering his fourth full season with the Armada, it has been expected that Ludbrok would be a catalyst for the teams offense. After averaging over a point per game in season 72, he took a step back statistically last year with only 49 points in 66 games. And while those numbers aren't terrible, it wasn't what he or the team was expecting from him. He has looked every bit the player he was envisioned to be when the Philadelphia Forge selected him 17th overall in the S73 draft. He'll look to carry that momentum going into the regular season.

2. Chuck Chunky - D (7GP, 1-6-7): With defensemen Dan Johnston and Kazuchika Okada moving on (they didn't die, they're playing in the SHL now), the Armada were left with a massive hole on the backend. So it came as no surprise when the Armada used their first two picks of the draft to take D-men. With the 8th overall pick they took Deth Klaw but it was the 18th pick who stood out during preseason, that being Chuck Chunky. He fits the new mould of the ever evolving defensemen. At 5'11" and 190lbs and great top-end speed, he has all the tools to be a great PP quarterback and all-around defensemen and he showed a glimpse of that during the meaningless preseason games.

3. Stun Gun / Meo Vanbiesbrouck - G: The Armada return with the same goalie tandem they rolled with last season. Statistically, they were middle of the pack in most categories last year. Not the best, and not the worst. But as we all know, strong goaltending goes a long way. How did they fare during the preseason? About the same. Bizarrely, the coaching staff opted to not start Vanbiesbrouck in any of the games, and he only played 20 minutes in relief so his sample size is far too small to analyze. Stun Gun, on the other hand, posted a .872% SP and 3.46 GAA in 7 games played. And while his record in those games was 5-2, that was largely due to the Armada offense firing on all cylinders. Hardly something that you can rely on for the duration of a full season, unless you're the 1980's Edmonton Oilers.

There will obviously be a lot more than just these four players that factor into the success that the Armada have during the S75 season, but by season's end don't be surprised if their results, good or bad, are intrinsically linked to the aforementioned players.

In conclusion, SAN DIMAS HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RULES  GO BOATS!!!  Armada Armada Armada

Lily Jin Morrow and Groaty Bronson are leading the pack in points with 4.1 and 3.7 Goals per 60. They are both looking to have a successful season as long as they keep putting their best skate forward on the ice.
Archibald Walker, Nick Larsson, and Andy Lammers are our key defenders this year so far, with 101.7, 97.6 and 97.1 PDO, respectively. They may need to work on their aggression and “go get ‘em” attitude, but I’m sure between the coaches and the GMs they will be whipped into shape and beating up other players in no time.
Joulu Kuusi is the face of the goal this season, playing 27 games with 1184 minutes on the ice and an astounding 5 wins. We just need to work on getting those losses down.

I think the 3 most important players are myself MattyJ and boomchecks player. Turtle Bob is doing good things on the defensive end I wish I was doing a bit better currently being -2 in the +- category. Matty is still developing into a solid young forward who we will need to keep the development up in order for us to get the chances we need at scoring goals. The Boomcheck agency is similar to the Cuffy agency as they have both been around the SHL for a long time giving the team a great veteran leadership in the locker room. Warwaha has much the same path as MattyJ still looking to improve his scoring capabilities as well as his puck handling and shot accuracy. All these things are what NL needs the most they need their rookies to play their role and do their job.
