S50 PT #1 - Season 50 Anniversary Gala

The SHL 50th Anniversary Gala is quite a sight to behold, especially if you're camped out by the red carpet. Of course, all of the SHL's top players are showing up in their best finery. There are quite a few tuxes and little black dresses to be seen, which is about par for the course when you're on the carpet, but some of the players are using this opportunity to make a statement or show off their own personal style. Tommy Tuck, the goalie for the Edmonton Blizzard, made it well known how he felt the league was representing him, by just donning a black trash bag to the event. Of course, he was asked to change or leave by security. He came back a handful of minutes later in a tux, but he believed that his point had been made. Teddy Cuddles. long time Blizzard Alternate Captain, was wearing a teddy bear onesie, apparently taking his last name to an entirely different level. Aron Hernandivic, new St. Louis Scarecrows' Captain, showed up to the event in a giant fish costume. When asked on the red carpet how he came about this decision, he said that it was for a lost bet in the locker room, representing that the Crows' players all call him Captain Fish. (212 words)

Not being from North America, Olivier didn't have a hometown team in the SHL to cheer for, so he tended to just illegally stream the games of certain players. He was a big fan of Zach Evans, but he's had a few opportunities to meet and talk to him thanks to his son being in the same draft class and now on the same SHL team. However, he's never had a chance to meet Mikko Linna since he moved to Sweden after his retirement, and the 50th anniversary gala is the perfect opportunity to track him down. Olivier set out with Leo, Dom, and Jimmy in tow to find Mikko and his wife Mia Landvik sitting at a table with a fair few legends from West Kendall and New England alike. Olivier was a bit starstruck at first and forgot how to speak, but Landvik recognized the boys and immediately jumpstarted the conversation. Soon enough they were all chatting like colleagues rather than fans and heroes, which is just about the best result Olivier could have asked for. He even got some advice from Linna. 10/10 best night ever.

Nikolai is seated with several of his Tampa Bay Barracuda teammates. He speaks most frequently throughout the night with Olivier Cloutier and Gunnar Soderberg, the two rookie sensations for the Barracude in Season 49. Admittedly, Cloutier was in and out with many of his friends from other SHL teams, mostly young players who cut their teeth at the same time as Cloutier and Nikolai. However, Nikolai was never much of a people person, so socializing isn’t his scene.

The food is pretty good, but the lack of vodka disappoints Nikolai. Several people come and go throughout the night at the table, especially those looking to congratulate Cloutier on his Jesster Trophy. Very little makes Nikolai uncomfortable, but this ceremony does. Maybe it’s the fact that the spotlight isn’t on him. Maybe it’s knowing, three seasons into his SHL career, he hasn’t performed well enough to earn that spotlight weighing on him.

C: As the night turns into morning and the drinks have been flowing, things start to get a bit unruly. Describe what's happening by the end of the night, once the older folks have gone home and the true party animals are in charge.

After the gala dinner ended, everyone went to the afterparty. Tony Ford of course, was following the crowd, but while peering into a bar on the way spotted a familiar face. He found a mentor of his who had since disappeared from the league, Johnny Sins, and invited him to come out on the town with all of the cool people in the league (aka S47). Many a drink had already been had, but most of them were just getting started. Julio Tokolosh was.... well let's not talk about the affects of alcohol on cows (or for that matter, otters), but a lot of the rest of the folks weren't having a great time either. Jax Duggan was unconscious by 11, basically before the party got started, so obviously everyone had a lot of fun seeing what they could do to his unconcscious body (nothing malicious of course), and some of the rest were not in a great state. It was a hell of a clean up afterwards.

Kristaps Ball is gonna go and get lit at this party, to say the least. Shots, weed, shots, and more shots! He’s gonna have it all! He plans to do this all with former teammate Alex Andani (@Carbine) who is at the same table as him. Also at the table that won’t be joining in the Ball and Andani attempt to get suspended by the league for drugs are Barracuda players like Flacko Lagerfield (@JSS) and Benjamin Blue (@"BoucherFan12"). Besides the shots, the drinks are mediocre at best. There are some one offs, kinda like Andani and his career, and there are some things that are consistently great, similar to Blue and Lagerfield being consistent GOATs. Ball avoids the food though, he is here to have a night he literally won’t even remember till he reads the timeline in court as the defendant. Here’s to season 50, with a drunk Kristaps Ball!

Throughout the night, I'm going back and forth from the food to the dance floor. Whenever there's a really high energy song that I like, I break out some moves the motherland taught me to the amusement of my friends. I'm seated with some of my teammates including Rafe Ulrich and Manuel Gotze, two of New England's greatest active players. The food was pretty good even though it was mostly appetizers. The spring rolls were a hit with me, as were the offered mini hot dogs and the stuffed mushrooms, quite a good selection and there was more than enough for everyone in attendance. The alcohol was great, there was an open bar and you could order whatever drink you wanted. Everyone at the table was getting progressively more drunk as the night goes on and between the liquor and the champagne, almost everyone is completely gone before things are even close to wrapping up.

The SHL's fiftieth season gala was a spectaular event, with SHL players past and present showing up to commemorate the momentous occasion. Andreas Kvalheim was a bit starstruck from the whole encounter, and set off to find and talk to legends of the SHL. Always focused on improving his game, Kvalheim sought off former players who had played a similar style of game to him in order to gain some insight on what it takes to be a prominent power forward. First he sought out a pair of New England Wolfpack legends in Nathan Russell and Carter O'Callahan, both of who had won multiple Jeff Dar trophies and were formidable hitters and goalscorers in their day. Next he sought out Taylor McDavid and Jonathan Lundberg, the SHL's top two career hitters. Having set himself the goal of reaching #1 all time in hits, Kvalheim was curious as to what these two legends had to say about maintaining their physical play throughout 20 or more seasons in the SHL.

Throughout the night, I'm sitting there with my favorite people from the S47 draft class of Whalers, downing a few rum and cokes with them like back when we played together. Sitting to my left is Theo Morgan ( @Otrebor13 ) who is talking about how much he enjoy playing in Los Angeles and how he sits on the beach every night after playing a game with a beer. Shut the fuck up Theo. To my left is Jax Duggan ( @SecondSucks22 ) and Aaron Wilson ( @aaronwilson ). Jax, Aaron, and I are pretty caught up with each other since we play in Hamilton together, but Jax just won't stop shitting on Theo for not being able to score in the playoffs. Aaron, on the other hand, won't get his face out of his laptop as it seems he's trying to figure out this season's lines for Hamilton. We had a few visitors come to our table like current Whalers players, Jean-Paul Boivin ( @Nokazoa ), Bjorn Leppanen ( @puolivalmiste ), and Francois Breton ( @treesap ). Jean-Paul and Francois seemed to be way too drunk to know what was happening around them, which doesn't surprise anyone at all, as last time Jean-Paul was drunk, he got a news reporter pregnant and currently pays her child support.

Option B

Oh the night we had.

First off big shout out to Rex Kirkby for organising the sweet ride to the gala. Being driven there in style and then having the same ride back to the hotel at the end of the gala was great. Was also the only time I got to just chill and hangout me and him, which has been a hell of a long time. It's hard to give the time to these friendships you make early in your career when you are travelling non-stop. And even though we play six times a season there is always that awkwardness post game that one of us has just beaten the other.

But this was great we rocked up having had a great scotch selection to choose from and went straight to a table inside, ordered a few favourite bottle to hang with us at the table and basically camped there for the rest of the evening. Allowing our friends, teammates, friendly rivals to drop by drink some of our scotch (and rum) over the evening.

Highlights:
  • cc2's goat was delicious. Chef's managed a great Cury from the leftovers that really worked the taste.
  • Jax was a great foil for Rex while he was around with us
  • Winters can't hold his rum (take your pick, both put on a great display when they stopped by)
  • My mates Maxime and Leo really brought the hat game to a new level

Sitting with some of the other Chicago players, their significant others and Nyko’s emotional support Wooper. We all really took in all the extravagant event that had been put on by the SHL. The food looks amazing and the surprise performance by a hologram of the late Prince was oddly comforting. Everyone is spending time just having a good time and talking about what the league has in store of this monumental season. Things were going really well until someone found a bottle of Glayva behind the bar and started feeding it to the support peacock. The fire in the Wooper's eyes were something that sent a chill through the crowd. 4 of us managed to corner the peacock in the coat room which will hopefully allow it sleep off that horrible liquor however we have all come to terms with the fact we might not get any of our coats back in a respectable fashion.

Prince Devitt was seen being the talkative type that he is, to a lot of players from the past and present in the SHL. Guys that he didn't know a whole lot of about coming to this event as he was secluded in this wrestling bubble that he was in for most of professional sports career. He obviously knew the SHL Shield that his mentor CrossFit Jesus was apart of with with Luke "Lunatic Fringe" Fleming and The Big Dawg Max Weber who were both present as it seems Luke Fleming and CrossFit Jesus reconciled their differences. When the media asked how they reconciled it was more the time off from hockey for Luke Fleming that got him to open his perspective on life and learning that keeping grudges after hockey was over. Prince Devitt was seated with the SHL Shield, Winnipeg great Big Manius and his son Lil Manius @Bonk , West Kendall great Slappy McDoodle @Slappydoodle and Prince Devitt's fellow Dragons Bullet Club Member Otis B. Driftwood, West Kendall great Alex Light @Zoone16 and lastly Calgary Dragon great Esa Anrikkanen @Steelhead77 . As the night went on they table shared a lot of laughs talking about the history of the SHL. But as the drinks flowing and the food was getting short at the buffet table. An drunken argument between Otis B. Driftwood and Luke Fleming came about which faction was the better faction which came into blows as security quickly broke it up and they were both escorted out of the venue, and both were arranged seperate taxis take them back to the hotel. After the night the rest of the night was pretty normal with Prince Devitt taking barwomen home after the night was done to do extra curricular activities.

Task A

Kevin Robinson managed to score an invite to the SHL Gala, much to his surprise.  This gave him a unique opportunity to get to know some of the SHL's greatest and finest players, both current and retired.  His first matter of business, after getting a few drinks, was to introduce himself to Jeff Dar, for whom the Best Two Way Forward trophy is named for.  Robinson, fancying himself the next great two way center of the SHL, walked up to introduce himself and pick the legendary player's brain.  However as soon as he got close, Dar simply shook his head and said "sorry, no autographs", and walked away.  In a state of shock, Robinson realized no one knows who is as player, 5th round SMJHL draft and 2nd round SHL draft.  If he wants to fit in here he'll have to earn it.  Oh well, there's always the open bar.
