Game 1- Cyclones vs Eagles

Cyclones 0-0-0

Eagles 0-0-0

Final Score- Cyclones (4) - Eagles (3)

Game Review: The first period was all Eagles as the shots were 14-4 in their favor. Cuddles potted one at 7:59 with assists Schroder and Bennett. Haugen takes a penalty for Goalie Interference on Marmeladov and Cuddles scores on the PP only 20 seconds in at 9:23. The powerplay goal was assisted by Schroder and Garrett. Cuddles and Schroder both come out of that period with 2 pts and the Eagles have a 2-0 lead.

The second period is like a mirror image of the first, with the Cyclones coming alive after a rough start. Shots this period were 9-3 for the Cyclones as they pressured the Eagles and challenged their lead. Shooter McGavin puts one past Marmeladov at 8:42 with assists from McZehrl and Christiansen. Nova then takes a penalty for slashing and Driftwood blasts one from the point to tie the game. This PP marker is scored at 12:52 with assists from Kalju and Lokitonov. The game is tied going into the third and the Cyclones have a lot of momentum of the game-tying goal.

The hero of the second period, Driftwood takes a penalty 5 seconds in for hooking and the Eagles don’t take long to snipe one past Tuck. Bennett scores from Izzy and Garrett at 0:53 seconds to take the lead again. The shots are closer this period, 9-6 Eagles but Tuck helps his team out by saving 8 of 9 to keep his team in the game. At the other end of the ice Toner comes right back to tie the game with a goal at 4:15 assisted by Dekens and Clijsters. Shooter McGavin then brings the Cyclones bench to their feet with a nice goal at 6:51, just under 3 minutes later, assisted by Christiansen. They hold onto the lead for 15 minutes and take this one 4-3. The total shots are 26 for the Eagles and 19 for the Cyclones.

Player of the Game

Shooter McGavin - 2 goals, 2 shots, +2

McGavin had an incredible night scoring the opening and game winning goals. With only 2 shots all night, he found a way to put them both past Marmeladov and brought the Cyclones their first win of the tournament.

Takeaways

Eagles- They started very hot in the first, with Cuddles scoring both goals and the defense chipping in offensively as well. 2 powerplay goals is nice but they had 9 opportunities and if they capitalized on one or two more this would be a different game. Marmeladov didn’t have a great night but they have to work on keeping a lead.

Cyclones- Big comeback win and not letting a bad first keep them out of the game. One area they need to improve on is discipline, as they had 9 penalties this game. Their PK did alright and their powerplay scored 1 out of 3 so the special teams are doing their job. Tuck didn’t have the best game but he did outduel Marmeladov and stood tall to give his team the W.

Cyclones 1-0-0

Eagles 0-1-0

Game 2- Fury vs Greyhounds

Fury 0-0-0

Greyhounds 0-0-0

Final Score- Fury (2) - Greyhounds (1)

Game Review: The Fury came out of the gate swinging with 10 shots to the Greyhounds’ 5, but Carpet stopped them all to start the first period with a tremendous performance. Finley is sent to the box just over halfway through the period for high sticking and the Greyhounds set up on the powerplay. Muller snipes one past Cain at 13:22 to put the Greyhounds on the board with their first goal of the tournament. The PP goal is assisted by Tokolosh. The period ends with a 1-0 lead for the Greyhounds despite being outshot by double.

The Fury find their groove in the second and make the Greyhounds pay for their penalties. Only getting 5 shots to the Greyhounds’ 9, Cain decides it's his turn to stand on his head on not let in any of those 9 shots. Theo Morgan was ejected from the game at 15:43 in the first for Abuse of Officials and given a Major penalty/ Game misconduct. The Greyhounds were able to hold out through the first but 0:24 seconds into the second Winters finally puts one home with assists from Thomason and Murphy. This brings new life to the Fury team as they have finalled solved Carpet. Tony Ford gets 2 minutes for elbowing just 4 minutes later and the Fury powerplay strikes again, this one at 5:46 by Williams with assists coming from Murphy and Mauldin. This is Murphy’s second point of the period, both on the powerplay. The Fury totally turn this game on it's head and end the second with a 2-1 lead.

The third period is uneventful if you look at the scoresheet, with 7 shots for the Fury and 4 shots for the Greyhounds. None of them light the lamp and the goalies end this game with pretty good save percentages. This period was very eventful if you look at penalties, with a parade to the box as 8 total minor penalties were called and 2 fights occurred. Aittokallio squared up with Westbroek and won but Pepperoni lost against Roenick. These teams ignited a bitter rivalry and we will see if it carries over between games. The game ends with a 2-1 win for the Fury, 22-18 shots favoring the victors and some bruised egos all around.

Player of the Game

Tig Murphy- 2 assists, 2 PPP, 6:03 minutes on the PP

Murphy was an offense machine tonight picking up points on both Fury goals. He is the Quarterback for unit 1 and is doing his job well. If he keeps this up the Fury will not be a team you want to take a penalty against.

Takeaways

Greyhounds- Carpet had a good game which is nice to see but the team in front of him was shaky. Only 18 shots total is not what you want to see and Carpet kept this from being a much higher scoring game. The Greyhounds were shorthanded 7 times tonight including a game misconduct, and the fact that they only killed off 5 of them cost them the game. Both their penalty kill and their discipline need to be tightened up before the next game.

Fury- A good comeback win by the Fury, Cain had a good game and the team in front of him played well. You’d like to see some 5on5 goals in there but their 2 powerplay goals were enough to bring home the win. The defense chipped in on those goals which is nice to see and it looks like the PP for the Fury is lights out.

Fury 1-0-0

Greyhounds 0-1-0

Game 3- Sharks vs Covenant

Sharks 0-0-0

Covenant 0-0-0

Final Score- Covenant (3) - Sharks (2)

Game Review: This one was a shocker as the Sharks dominated but had no finish against the young team and their red hot goalie. Viewers were stunned as Bischoff scores a nice goal against Vilde from Leppanen at 12:54, putting the Covenant in the lead just over halfway through the first. MacIntyre gets it back though, tying the game at 14:33 with assists from Takshak and Schieck. The period ends with shots 14-4 for the Sharks but the score showing 1-1.

A very uneventful second, it looked to be scoreless until a buzzer beater by Veccelli with 4 seconds left in the period, with Dayudie and Barron assisting. The Covenant take the lead going into the third with Vilde stopping 7 of 8 shots and Venables stopping all ten from the Sharks.

The Sharks are not taking kindly to being schooled by a bunch of juniors players as Carter scores a quick one at 4:04 from Ulrich and Robert to knot the game back up at 2. The clock winds down and no one is able to score until just under a minute to go. At 19:09, Rykov slips one under the pad of Vilde to again put the Covenant in the lead, with Maximus assisting. They finish this one out with a huge win, making the Sharks chase the lead since the first period. Total shots are 34 for the Sharks, and 23 for the Covenant.

Player of the Game

Ian Venables- .941 sv%, 2.00 GAA, 32 saves

Venables had the near impossible task of shutting down the likes of Lagerfield and Czerkawski, and he did it with style as he held them to 2 goals on 34 shots. This includes 2 Sharks powerplays which he held them scoreless on. Venables is looking like a true starter in the SHL if he keeps this up.

Takeaways

Covenant- While having a hot goalie is great, you can’t count on it every night and they need to limit some of the shots from the opponent. Their penalty kill was perfect but their powerplay failed to score on 4 attempts so that could use some work. Still, they scored first and last as the kept the Sharks on their heels and took the W against an amazingly talented team. Props to them.

Sharks- I’m sure they are already embarrassed by getting held to two goals against a goalie that has not seen a minute of SHL ice, but they have a lot to work on. A powerplay goal would have changed this game but they failed twice, and they generated a lot of shots but didn’t finish on them. Hopefully this is a down game for both Vilde and the team and they can go into the next game with a better mindset.

Sharks 0-1-0

Covenant 1-0-0

Game 4- Astros vs Young Guns

Young Guns 0-0-0

Astros 0-0-0

Final Score- Astros (8) - Young Guns (2)

Game Recap: This one will be shorter as this game became a blowout pretty fast. The Young Guns came out swinging with 8 shots to the 7 by the Astros. They opened up the scoring at 28 seconds in with a blast by Trevino from Zhernov and Skinner, but the game would go downhill from here. Owens takes a tripping penalty and the Astros convert on the powerplay, Kandinsky tucking it home at 3:13 with assists from Forty-One and Cleary. The period ends 1-1 after the Astros tied it.

Owens takes his second tripping minor of the game 24 seconds before the end of the first and the Astros begin the second by scoring another powerplay goal, this one by Connolly with assists by Cleary and Blackwood. It was scored at just 1:09 seconds into the second. Nicholas Owens takes another tripping penalty and you can see where this is going, Blackwood scores a powerplay marker at 7:14 with assists from Connolly and Cleary. This powerplay is deadly and Cleary has his 3rd point of the night. The Young Guns don’t get the memo and take another penalty, this time Petrenko is sitting 2 for hooking. The Astros do what they’ve done all night, which is score a powerplay goal, this one from Horvat assisted by Johnson at 9:24. They then win the faceoff and rush up ice and Puhcheese puts it home at 9:38 from Odelein. This prompts a goalie change by the Young Guns as Doyle’s night is done. The period ends without anymore scoring at the Astros get 4 in the first ten minutes to go up 5-1. The shots this period are 20 to 5 in favor of the winning team.

Valentine-Okoli took a tripping minor at 19:03 of the second and the special teams do their thing and Skinner scores for the Young Guns at 16 seconds in with assists from Petrenko and Del Vecchio. The Astros don’t take too kindly to this and Blackwood gets his second of the night at 4:27 from Forty-One and Claude. Zhernov takes a tripping minor and you already knows how this ends. Horvat gets his second on the powerplay at 4:57 with assists from Johnson and Larsen. As if this isn’t embarrassing enough, Hanson takes a hooking minor and the Astros get their 6th powerplay goal of the night, Zizagooney scoring from Valentine-Okoli and Claude at 10:40. Thankfully for the Young Guns this is the end of the scoring for the night and the final score is 8-2 with 39 shots from the Astros and 18 by the Young Guns.

Player of the Game

Oliver Cleary- 3 assists, 3 PPP, 5:15 PP minutes

What a night for the young defenseman. That second unit absolutely shredded the Young Guns PK and Cleary lasered passes to Kandinsky, Connolly, and Blackwood. Panthers fans are very happy with the showing from the young defenseman.

Takeaways

Young Guns- Yikes. Everything went poorly in this game from about 2 minutes in. The 8 penalties, the 6 PP goals against, the spotty goaltending, spotty defense, lack of offense. These kids have a lot to learn and they better start learning quick.

Astros- On the opposite side, wow. Everything clicked for them tonight, 6 powerplay goals and 7 players getting 2 pts or more. These guys found great chemistry together and will look to keep this train rolling in their next game.

Young Guns 0-1-0

Astros 1-0-0

Thanks for tuning in to the first sim! Hopefully reading this will give you some hype for the next set of games. These will likely become less verbose as I run out of steam but who knows, I have a lot of hours at work over the coming days.

The index will be updated when I get home, for now this will be all the info provided about the sim.
