The Second ETGISTE Scouting Report

Hello again and welcome back one and all to the second edition of the ETGISTE Rookie Scouting report. As with the previous report, this document was put together by the highly qualified (and incredibly handsome) folks over at the European TG Institute for Scouting and Talent Evaluation™ PTY LTD © (or ETGISTE for short). We are once again bringing you the finest a GM could ask for in scouting and evaluation of young talent, guaranteeing a 100% success rate when it comes to accurately judging talent and potential. The advanced calculations used to come up with the scores we use to evaluate our targeted players are so advanced that there is simply no point in us disclosing them to the public as they are too convoluted and unconventional that not even we ourselves fully understand them. All we know is that they guarantee a 100% success rate and absolute customer satisfaction.

Before we begin our report, here is some information regarding the system and the S51 draft in-general.

--------------------

TGSSI is a combined score of PP/20, Fantasy points/20 as well as some other statistics. It aims to predict how productive a player will be, in all facets of the game, per 20 minutes of ice-time.

-Only players who have been active within the last 30 days are included in this list.
-Only players who have played in 30 games or more are included in this list.
-Only regular season games count towards the TGSSI.
-TPE is not taken into account when calculating TGSSI.

-Total of 28 active skaters.
-Total of 7 active goalies.

- The average TGSSI of the S51 draft class is 0.80.
-1 in 4 skaters in the S51 draft class reached an TGSSI score of 1 or above.

A TGSSI score of 1.20 or above is considered ELITE and predicts a player that will play a large part in the success of any team, provided that the player continues to develop.

A TGSSI score of 1.00 or above is considered a VERY GOOD player and predicts that the player can be relied upon to have a meaningful part on any team, provided the player continues to develop.

TGSSI does not take into account player likeability or LR activity.

TGSSI is a combined score of PP/20, Fantasy points/20 as well as some other statistics. It aims to predict how productive a player will be, in all facets of the game, per 20 minutes of ice-time.

It is worth noting that the TGSSI score can only be applied to actual humans so unfortunately numbers for goalies are unavailable (although our scientists are working very hard to make this happen). So ladies and gentleman, without further ado we present to you the top 16 prospects according to the TGSSI score system.

We also have a sponsor for this report, namely Dalwhinnie 15 year old single malt whisky. A big thanks to them for making this possible. If you enjoy what you see here, make sure to write them a old-timey letter to let them know that you liked it.  Coincidentally, if there are any egregious spelling mistakes, grammatical errors or any content that you find offensive within this document, they are to blame. Not me. Or the ETGISTE. Anyway, on with the report.

Ruslan Zaporozhets (LW) UKRAINE /  Scarecrows @CptSquall

It is an interesting age we are living in when, for two seasons in a row, we have players hailing from non-traditional hockey nations coming into our game and dominating. Last season it was an Estonian, this season we have a Ukrainian. Ruslan Zaporozhets was drafted at 13th overall by the St Louis Scarecrows in the S50 SMJHL entry draft and finished the season playing  on the second line with veterans Mitsuharu and Blackwood. He also spent some time on the Scarecrows powerplay. His biggest strength is his deceptive wristshot. His release is quick, sneaky and powerful and ranks amongst the best in the junior. He is the only player in this draft class to achieve a TGSSI of over 1.20 with an impressive total of 1.38. Averaging just under 15 minutes per game he managed to finish 3rd in rookie scoring with an impressive 15 goals and 12 helpers in his 50 games played. Zaporozhets is a player with a very high offensive potential, however he is no 200-foot player and this will likely hurt his final positioning in the draft. Expect him to go in the first round.

Berry Blue (D)  Uk  /  Armada @UnderSpider

After a few seasons of seeing the trend in defenseman leaning towards the offensively focused, this draft class is filled to the brim with fantastic two-way defenseman that are very responsible on both sides of the ice and Berry Blue from the United Kingdom is arguably one of the most prominent of this new breed of defenseman. The 4th overall pick from the SMJHL entry draft averaged just over eighteen and a half minutes of ice time per game and it is worth mentioning that he saw time on both the powerplay and the penalty kill during parts of the season, proving both his broad set if skills as a player and also the trust that his coaches and GMs had in his play. He finished the season with 5 goals and 22 assists for an impressive total of 27 points in his rookie season. What is even more impressive however, is when you take into account his +/- of +17 which really puts his defensive play into perspective. To say that he had elite numbers during his rookie season would almost not do his play justice. It is up to the SHL GMs and scout to decide if this young man will be able to keep up these numbers or if we will decline. The ETGISTE expect that he will continue to provide great numbers and we believe that he will be selected somewhere in the middle of the first round.

Alex Petrenko (D)    RussiaOutlaws @traphag

Going 12th overall in his SMJHL entry draft to the Anaheim Outlaws, the skilled young defenseman Alex Petrenko had a fantastic showing in his SMJHL rookie season. Physically, he isn’t the biggest guy out there but he may be one of the most relentless and persistent blueliners we’ve seen in recent times. He never gives up on a play and he is more than willing to put his body on the line to make crucial plays. He’s constantly talking to the other guys on the ice and keeps his teammates spirits up during games, providing that X-factor that can be hard to pin down. His game on the ice is very balanced in his own ned of the rink while providing offensive support in the role of the play making quarterback. He had incredibly successful this season while on the man advantage, racking up two goals and a massive 11 assists. He led the race in rookie scoring and finished the season with 33 points in his 50 games. He averaged 22:30 minutes per game, proving that he can play big minutes and deliver at both ends of the ice. Expect him to go in the top 10 of the upcoming SHL entry draft.

Mitchell van der Heijden © NETHERLANDS / Armada @bluesfan55

To this writer, the Netherlands has always been a puzzling nation when it comes to producing skaters and particularly hockey players. Ice skating stands for a huge part of the nations sporting interest and its been a big part of the culture for a long time. You can find renaissance paintings filled with skaters and they famously defeated an invading spanish army because their soldiers were able to fight on skates and up to this day they produce some great speed skaters but really not that many high calibre ice hockey players. The ETGISTE hopes that the young 11th overall pick, Mitchell van der Heijden, will be the first of many Netherlanders to take the next step in their ice hockey careers. Anyway, on to the player himself. Van der Heijden’s skating is quite good, as is expected from a Netherlander, and his shot has been very deadly, posting a massive 18.67% shooting percentage. He is an incredibly well rounded player that has lived up to his staple as a two-way forward with a nice and even 14 goals and 14 assists, placing him in second place in rookie scoring as well as finishing the season with an almost even +/- at -1. With some additional time in the league the defensive side of his play should even out with his offensive production. He played out the season on the Armadas third line as well as getting some nice minutes on the man advantage where he scored 4 goals and a total of 7 points. It is also worth noting that van der Heijden plays a very clean game with just 6 PIM in 50 games played. Mitchell van der Heijden would be an excellent addition to any SHL roster and we expect him to go in the first round.

Alexander Wachter (RW)  AustriaKraken @MP7

After winning the four star cup last season, Carolina (formerly Montreal) had come off a season that was really an ode to their head office and particularly the scouts. The players they picked up all played key roles in winning the cup for them not only in the S49 season but also in the repeat in the S50 season. The Austrian two-way forward Alexander Wachter is hoping to add to that legacy and so far, he has done a pretty damn impressive job of it. The mid second round pick was never going to play top minutes in his first year but he really excelled in a depth position on the fourth line, playing just over 9 minutes per game and potting 9 goals as well as 4 assists with minimum special teams time. Another solid, two-way forward that could contribute and help push the team to their back to back cup. His shot as well as his skating really stand out but to even out his game he will need to work on his physical strength as well as his positioning. We expect that he will go late in the first round or more likely in the second round.

Abel Skinner (D)  Ukraiders @KC15

Perhaps the most well known player of this draft, Abel Skinner, is expected by many to go in the top 3 of the upcoming draft, perhaps even as high as first overall. The young defenseman from the United Kingdom was drafted first overall by the Halifax raiders and has proven to be a home run for the team so far. Abel has played on the first defensive pairing during his rookie season, alongside the sophomore Adam Barron. He also got time on the second powerplay and penalty kill units, averaging almost 21 minutes of ice time per game. He seemed to excel on the powerplay where he was an offensive dynamo for the team, quarterbacking the second unit and potting 2 goals as well as putting up 10 helpers. His total numbers for the rookie season was 5 goals and 22 assists. As a offensive talent, he is elite prospect with the talent to become one of the the SMJHL’s most productive quarterbacks in the league and if he rounds it his game a little he may just become one of the top defenseman in the juniors, full stop. We would be remiss if we didn't mention his locker room presence, as he seems to be one of the most popular guys in the league and quite the gentleman at that. Expect Skinner to go very high in the first.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Jr (D)  Sweden  /  Whalers @soulja

This one is really interesting. No one can argue with Ibrahimovic Jrs pedigree as an athlete but we certainly were not expecting the famous Ibras son to get into hockey instead of football like his father. So far it seems to have worked without any major flaws as he put up some fantastic offensive numbers in his rookie season. Zlatan Jr was selected 6th overall by the Vancouver Whalers and instantly slotted into the first defensive pairing with the veteran blueliner Mikas Bieksa as well as seeing time on the second powerplay unit. He plays a taxing, hard-nosed and physical game and isn't at all afraid of stepping up and joining the rush. He averaged just over 21 minutes of ice time per game in his rookie season and racked up 26 points, scoring 6 goals and assisting in another 20. He really excels at his game in 5 on 5 situations where he can take advantage of his size and physical play style to force turnovers or suboptimal plays. Zlatan Jr looks to be a future star in the hockey world and we expect him to go early in the first round, most likely in the top 8.

Stracimir Petrovic © SERBIA  /  Whalers @"AtlasHunter"

In what is perhaps the most diverse draft in recent memory in terms of player nationality, the young Serbian Petrovic is another piece of proof that hockey is a growing game, not just amongst minorities in North America but also in nations that are not usually associated with hockey. Petrovic is a huge, strong center who excels within the face-offs circle, taking 766 face-offs in his rookie season and winning an impressive 55.61% of them. This, combined with his fantastic playmaking skills make him an excellent offensive threat. This late second rounder centred Vancouvers third line last season and got a small amount of powerplay time during parts of the season. His balanced playstyle combined with his face-off skill made him a fantastic asset as a depth player but he will be looking to take on a more prominent role in future seasons. He manages to score 8 goals and assisted in another 11 for a grand total of 19 points in his rookie season, not too shabby considering he played just over 15 minutes per game. We expect him to go late in the first or early in the second. Don't be surprised if he ends up moving up to a higher pick as reliable workhorse center like Petrovic are few and far between.

The Stingray That Killed Steve Irwin (LW)  Ireland  /  Whalers @Gooney

The 4th of September, 2006, I still remember it like it was yesterday… I was a senior in highschool and I was living in Australia at the time. I was in my car, driving home from school when suddenly, the music I was listening to on the radio was paused due to a special announcement. All around legend and true blue aussie Steve Irwin had passed away in a freak diving accident. I couldn't believe it. I went into a long period of mourning and I cried, and so did the entire nation for its lost son. After his funeral, the nations grief had turned into hatred and rage. Angry letters were sent to Kirribilli house and demanded that the identity of the perpetrator be released to the general public but no answer came. There would be no revenge for the enraged bloodthirsty mobs. And now, over 13 years later, that good for nothing, scaly son of a bitch has resurfaced to tear open the wounds of old. That is all you need to know about this devil in disguise. Our advice is to not draft him, he has a history of breaking hearts.

Kaarlo Kekkonen (LW)  Finland  /  Falcons @dankoa

The first thing you notice when laying eyes on this young Finnish forward is his size. He is a big guy and if he bulks up after a few seasons in the pro leagues, this is a guy who could crush bones if he wanted to. However, no need to worry as heavy physicality is not part of Kaarlo Kekkonens game, at least not so far. Kekkonen is a large, two-way forward with exception puck handling skills and a fantastic shot. He is a real student of the game and is often able to break up and nullify plays before they have a chance to unravel. The 8th overall pick of the SMJHL entry draft played his rookie season on the Falcons first line with veterans Anazibf and Fouquette, as well as seeing some time on the first power play unit. He averaged just over 18 minutes per game and managed to pot 9 goals and racked up 12 helpers for a total of 21 points. Playing with two veterans as a rookie can occasionally be quite detrimental to your overall stats as you may feel overwhelmed or even intimidated by them, almost subconsciously forcing yourself to stand in their shadows. We believe that this may be the case with Kekkonen and we believe that his sophomore and third season will increasingly help to bring out the real talent in this young man. In other words, he’s a star in the making. We believe he will go in the first round.

Nicholas Owens (D)  Japan  /  Outlaws  @Grum

Another strong showing from a two-way defenseman from the Anaheim Outlaws, the second overall pick from the SMJHL entry draft Nicholas Owens is absolute proof that Japan is quickly becoming one of the more dominant nations in our sport, producing a multitude of high quality young players over the last few seasons. Owens is a highly skilled player with good skating, endurance and strength. He is great at reading the developing play and does not shy away from physical or difficult play. His grit, determination and physical strength combined with his puck handling skills makes him great at working the corners, something that can be very difficult for rookie defenseman in this league. Aside from his great defensive play he also put up some impressive offensive numbers with 5 goals and 16 helpers for a total of 21 points in his rookie season while averaging just over 21 minutes per game. This flashy young defenseman has a great future ahead of him with many speculating that he will have a breakout season in his sophomore year. Expect him to go in the top 5 in the upcoming draft.

Indigo Trevino (RW)  Latvia  /  raiders @Carbine

Here at the ETGISTE, we love a throwback. I mean, we REALLY love a throwback and that is exactly what Indigo Trevino is. This young latvian forward was selected early in the second round of the SMJHL entry draft and plays a gritty and physical style of play and feels most at home in the tougher areas to play like the corners and in front of the net. He seems to feed from that rough style of play and while scouting him it often seemed like he was enjoying the game more than anyone else on the ice, especially when the going got tough. Indigo finished his rookie season on the first line of the Halifax raiders and he also got some time second powerplay unit. He averaged almost 17 minutes per night and managed to score 11 goals and 6 assists for a total of 17 points. In the current climate of the sport he will most likely be relegated to a bottom 6 role in the big leagues if he is unable to even out the defensive side of his game. This writer is looking forward to seeing more of this young man in action. Expect him to go in the first round, probably late.

Luciano Vessot (D)  Canada  /  Knights @NJBadApple

Anyone who paid any attention at all the the SMJHL will more than likely be familiar with this young Canadian by now. The late second rounder spent his rookie season on the top line alongside veteran SMJHLer Prince Devitt and the two defenseman had instant chemistry.  His physical endurance combined with his excellent skating and passing abilities made him a cornerstone player for the Knights almost overnight. Vessot average a whopping 22:29 minutes of ice time per game, getting time on the first unit for both the powerplay and the penalty kill. He made a difference in all situations, with 7 points on the powerplay (4 goals, 3 assists) and even managed to pot himself a shorthanded goal for good measure. His total scoring for his rookie season was 8 goals and 13 assists for a total of 21 points, finishing his season in a comfortable +11. Very impressive. On top of all that he also manages to play an incredibly clean game, only spending two minutes in the sin bin in his 50 games played. Vessot is an incredibly talented young defenseman you will without a doubt be a top pairing guy in the SHL in our humble (but highly informed) opinion. There are however rumours that his heart isn't fully in the game and that his attitude towards practice isn't the best. He may have peaked early, only time will tell. Look for him to go somewhere in the first half of the second round, possibly even later.

Al Kayhall (RW)  Usa  /  raiders @mxman991

Al Kayhall went 18th overall in the recent SMJHL entry draft and is a large, two-way forward from the United States. Without wanting to sound rude, he is perhaps the most unremarkable player on this list and, frankly, our scouts did not pay much attention to him during most of the season. He seemed like just another run of the mill two-way forward, just one of many. It is notable and worth reminding oneself that someone who plays the game with passion, dedication and without too many flashy moves can not only play and play well but also have a career in a league like the SHL and they can thrive. Kayhall is to us a perfect example of a no-nonsense player that gets the job done and frankly we feel a little ashamed for looking him over earlier in the season. Kayhall played on the third line for Halifax during his rookie season and was able to produced an impressive 8 goals and 7 assists for a total of 15 points, without seeing any special teams time. While having to work a little more on his defensive play, he will surely continue to play an important role on any team that he plays for and he is a constant reminder to us all that hard work and determination, while it may not be flashy, is ultimately just as valuable as talent when it comes to developing a young player.  We expect that he will go early in the second round.

Kenny Creller (LW)  IrelandFalcons @Mook

Defensive responsibility seems to be the trend of this years draftees and the Irish two-way forward Kenny Creller definitely fits that bill, although he may be a little disappointed with his play in his own end during his rookie season, the skills are there if you look at the underlying numbers. The 14th overall pick averaged around fourteen and a half minutes per game, playing exclusively in 5 on 5 situations. His physical style of play along with his positioning and ability to read the developing play made him a valuable member of the Falcons this season and with some improvement in his skating, he will without a doubt develop into a solid two-way forward that can live up to his potential. In his 50 games played he managed to score 5 goals and assist in another 7, totaling 12 points. While there are definitely some sexier picks on this list, Creller is a consummate professional that feels like he may slide into a leadership role in his near future. We believe he will be going in the second round of the upcoming SHL draft.

Cassidy Lhotsky (LW)  Austria  /  Falcons @Kasterborous

Finishing out our top 16 is another Austrian, namely the undrafted playmaking forward Cassidy Lhotsky. Lhotsky was picked up by Detroit as a free agent just hours after the draft and he seems to have been quite a steal for the team, really bolstering the depth of the Falcons. Although possessing a rather small frame at only 5’9’’ and weighing in at only 169lbs, Lhotsky plays is an exceptionally dogged player and plays much harder than his size would suggest. He looks to develop into the archetypical grinder, someone who would fit on the bottom 6 on almost any team, the kind of player that is especially valuable in games that really matter. He scored 4 goals and 3 assists in his rookie season while playing on the Falcons third line, without any special teams time. He averaged just over 8 minutes of ice time per game. If Lhotsky can even out his defensive game faults, we believe he will have a long and storied career as an undersized SHL grinder. This is the kind of guy that can easily become a fan favourite. We believe he will go late in the second round.

Thanks for taking the time to read our report and we hope you found it useful. The ETGISTE would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the system or the institute. We also accept monetary support in all forms.

Small print.
There is absolutely no proof whatsoever that the TGSSI system works for evaluating anything, least of all young athletes. The system also does not take into account all variables, as previously stated. No research at all has been put into the development of the TGSSI system.

Netherlander, although not as common as Dutch, is a real word. They are interchangeable.
