SMJHL S53 Team Needs and Full Mock Draft [2x Media]

(This post was last modified: 03-19-2020, 03:20 PM by Cobbenstein.)

Note: Word Count is 3099 words. All research and writing done by me. This is my first ever piece of media, I’m sorry if it’s not very good or I got some facts wrong because I misunderstood how some mechanics in the league worked. Thank you for taking the time to read this post!

Coming up tomorrow evening (7 pm EST) is the SMJHL S54 Draft. While most eyes will be focused on the main event, The SHL Entry Draft, a little earlier in the day (2 pm EST) a horde of new prospects will be waiting to see where they will begin their careers. This day is not only a big one for the players, but it's a big one for organizations as well. This is a chance to add a piece to extend a dynasty of success or maybe a chance to pick up what will be the first piece of the puzzle to rebuild a franchise. Either way, everything about it is exciting and important to the history of the SMJHL. Every year around this time, all SHL-related outlets do their version of a draft board. While all purely speculative, it gives a good chance to stop and review each team and what they may need to succeed going forward. This piece will attempt to do that and will provide a few opinions on what each team may do tomorrow.

Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws Outlaws

First up are the defending SMJHL champs, The Anaheim Outlaws. After a change of GM last offseason, they built quite a formidable squad that they rode to a championship. Now, success is not a new thing in Anaheim despite the recent change in leadership. They have 2 Four Star Cup Finals appearances in the last 5 seasons and 2 close 2nd round exits in between. Looking at their roster, they are poised to compete for the repeat. The majority of the core is still in place and the team has good depth at nearly all positions. The only place they could really look to bolster is at defenseman. The Outlaws are a story of extremes when it comes to defenseman. They have 2 very strong D-men and 2 very weak D-men. Their top 2 are returning stars Alex Petrenko and Nicholas Owens who are potentially in the conversation for the 2 best D-men in the whole SMJHL. While this is good, it also means they could potentially miss parts of the season to being called up and likely aren’t part of the long term plan of the Outlaws any longer. The flip-side of those 2 are the other 2 defensemen they have under contract. Both Yompy Stearf and Andreas Stacks seem to have flamed out at this level and stagnated in their progression. What this means is that any Defensemen that the Outlaws pick up will likely get good playing time this year early on and be poised to take over the reins in leading the defense going forward. The only thing that may hold back the Outlaws is the lack of picks they have. They had to forfeit their 1st rounder and they don't own a 3rd or 4th. This means a lot of the elite talent will not be available to them on draft day. So their scouts had better be coming prepared to find some diamond in the rough late in the draft.

Team Needs: Defensemen, Centers

Picks: 2-17, 5-47, 6-57, 7-67, 8-77, 9-87, 10-97

Potential Picks:

      2.   Gavin Wallace

      5.   Ron Jusso

      6.   Matus Rojik

Armada Anchorage Armada Armada

The Anchorage Armada are coming off of a tough 1st round exit in the Four Star Cup Playoffs this season after an impressive S51 run to a Four Star Cup Championship. Don’t mistake that early exit as a sign of a diminishing roster in  need of a rebuild though. This team has had sustained success since S48 with deep playoff runs in each year and despite some key losses this off season, their young core is still intact. Does this young core have the gumption to overcome the loss of their top scorer, top defender, and starting goaltender? I would say its very likely they will have a successful campaign in S53 if they can restock the roster with the right players. If there is one position that they need to focus on it’s Defense. The top pairing of Ulrik Bergstrom and Berry Blue is a respectable duo that can help to shut down opposing teams top lines night in and night out. Unfortunately after those 2 there are 3 D-men that have largely stagnated over the last few seasons and could be on the chopping block if the Armada pick up some young blood in the draft. On top of needing at least 1 or 2 defensemen the Armada will also need to pick up a goaltender to back Sergei Potvinov up this season at the very least. The Armada have the added benefit that they still own all their picks and have the 2nd overall pick in the draft. So they will have full access to pretty much all the talent the draft has to offer and it will give them a good chance to try and get back on track for next season.

Team Needs: Defensemen, Goaltender

Picks: 1-2, 2-12, 3-22, 4-32, 5-42, 6-52, 7-62, 8-72, 9-82, 10-92

Potential Picks:

  1. Matthew Sawful
  2. Joseph Fantobens
  3. Scroochi Stratton
  4. Vitek Vitecek
  5. Tobias Ray
  6. Johnny Boy
  7. John Walker

Kraken Carolina Kraken Kraken

The Carolina Kraken are a team of great interest going into the draft. Coming off of a very strong S52 campaign where the only roadblock they really met was running into the eventual champion Outlaws in the 3rd round. Over the past few seasons the Kraken have brought home 2 Four Star Cups and had deep playoff runs in the other seasons. The bad news for the Kraken is the loss of 6 forwards in the offseason. Losing that much talent up front can lead to 1 of 2 outcomes. Either the offense fades and the Kraken have to fall back on their strong defensive and goaltending core, or the young and talented core of forwards step up and embrace their new playing time by showing what they learned behind the old core. If the second outcome comes to fruition then we could be looking at a very dangerous and young Kraken squad going forward. This team is mainly looking for depth in the draft. Their top 2 lines of offense are filled and most of the defensive core is in place as well. This means that any player the Kraken draft will get a chance to slowly learn the game at the SMJHL level while trying to contribute to a potentially very strong future for the org. Their main need is going to be at center with a secondary need for some wingers. Now this may sound easy to do, but the one thing holding the Kraken back this year is their lack of draft picks. Their first pick doesn't come until the 39th overall pick in the 4th round. Much like the Outlaws the Kraken need to have good scouts on hand for this draft to find their stars of the future in the later rounds.

Team Needs: Centers, Wingers

Picks: 4-39, 5-49, 6-59, 7-69, 8-79, 9-89, 10-99

Potential Picks:
      4. Randen Skog
      5. Michael Willis
      6. Sean Clark

Raptors Colorado Raptors Raptors

The Colorado Raptors are coming off of a disappointing playoff exit in the first round after a strong regular season campaign. Other than a lone Four Star Cup appearance in S50 the #DinoGang have had early exits in regards to the playoffs as of late. The Raptors are another interesting team much like the Kraken. They too have a solid core going into the season and will need players to step up after losing their top 2 centers and a top D-man this off season. The team will have to lean on its strong goaltending duo from last season and hope that Henrik Lundqvist Jr. is ready to lead this team. The Raptors biggest concern going into this season is replenishing their defensive corps in the draft. They currently have 2 good defenders in Bradley Barkov, and Bryce Turner to fill out their top line, but the only other D-man on their team currently is Glen Anders who is likely to wash out of the team if there is any real competition at Defense over the next few years. So the focus going forward in the draft will likely be on building a new defensive core. The Raptors dont have a 2nd round pick this year but luckily they did retain all others. If the Raptors can have a strong draft and their young offensive core is ready then they may still be a force to be reckoned with in S53.

Team Needs: Defensemen, Centers

Picks: 1-6, 3-28, 4-38, 5-48, 6-58, 7-68, 8-78, 9-88, 10-98

Potential Picks:
  1. PJ Souppan
      3. Grigor Kalashnikov
      4. Benjamin Oliver
      5. Micael Borowiak
      6. Jordon Kettner

Falcons Detroit Falcons Falcons

The Detroit Falcons are coming off of an impressive 3rd round exit in the SMJHL playoffs. The previous 4 seasons before that they have had a mixed bag of finishes with no appearances in a cup final. They were the definition of a team in rebuilding mode. The sudden surge this season can be attributed to the young core they’ve built over the last few offseasons. The Falcons are absolutely stacked with young talent right now and will be looking to dominate the SMJHL for years to come after adding the final few pieces in this draft. This team doesn’t really have 1 glaring roster weakness that they need to shore up like most of the other teams, which means that they will be very interesting to watch in the draft. If I had to guess (which I do, cause why would I write this article otherwise?) the Falcons will want to focus on their defensive core this offseason. They have 4 good and active defenseman for this season in Guy O’Shea, Jack Kanoff, Magnus Liljestrom, and Toki Wartooth. So that makes up a solid top 2 pairings for next season. While the Falcons do have 6 total D-men, the other 2 leave a lot to be desired in terms of skill meaning that they could easily be on their way out in favor of even more youth. Overall the Falcons have a lot of good going forward and it will make them interesting to watch on draft day.

Team Needs: Defensemen, Centers

Picks: 1-8, 3-21, 4-40, 5-50, 6-60, 7-70, 8-80, 9-90, 10-100

Potential Picks:
  1. Tinke Jutila
      3. Dumpstr Chuckstr
      4. Corey Ringler
      5. David Zekimarahide
      6. Robert Von Wertz

Knights Kelowna Knights Knights

The Kelowna Knights are an odd team in terms of gauging where they are currently. This organization seems to do 1 of 2 things, either you lose in the first round of the playoffs or you lose in the Four Star Cup Finals. Either way you look at it, they lose. Commonly over the previous 5 years they have been a bottom of the barrel squad in the regular season, but have some success in the playoffs. This team is young and likely looking for pieces that can help contribute in the future as older guys like Morgan Forestier and Kalevlaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu age out of the SMJHL. This team is lead by 2 very strong winger in Andrey Barbashev II and Gylfi Eriksson as well as a top tier goaltender in Luca Del Vecchio. If the Knights want to get this core a Four Star Cup before they lose them to the SHL this is likely the year to do it. Really the Knights could pick anyone in the draft this year and it would make sense. They dont have an obvious hole in their line up and anythnig they do will just bolster what they already have. Id say their biggest weakness may be at Defenseman, but with how many teams are looking for top end defensive talent this season it would not surprise me to see Kelowna go in a different direction and pick up a center. The Knights do have 2 first round picks in this draft though so they could potentially ruin the defensive market by taking 2 early in the draft.

Team Needs: Defensemen, Centers, Goaltender

Picks: 1-4, 1-7, 2-14, 3-24, 4-34, 5-44, 6-54, 7-64, 8-74, 9-84, 10-94

Potential Picks:
  1. Elwulf Jericson
  2. Daniel LaForest
      2. Dwight Knight
      3. Kyle Sutton
      4. Matthew Hiser
      5. EJ Karlsson
      6. Hank Walton
      7. John Mulaney

Timber Maine Timber Timber

The Halifax Raiders were in a tough position at the end of last season both personnel wise and identity wise and that's why the relocation to Maine and the rebranding to the Timber makes so much sense. This is an organization that needs a revitalization almost across the board. Their roster consists mostly of career SMJHL talent outside of a few notable stars in wingers Indigo Trevino and Thicc Cheezy. They have retooled their center core in hopes that Alexander Roach is ready to lead a top line with the 2 star wingers at his sides. Other than that the Timber are very weak down the middle. Their defense could use a face lift as well. This team looks to be the very definition of a team amidst a rebuild and in the draft they could really target anyone and it would be beneficial to their roster. Whoever they end up picking will likely benefit from early and often ice time and the opportunity to make this team their own. With the 1st overall pick as well as 3 2nd round pick that will give them access to the top end talent of this draft and it will help greatly in their rebuild.

Team Needs: Center, Defenseman, Goaltender

Picks: 1-1, 2-1, 2-18, 2-19, 3-27, 4-31, 5-41, 6-51, 7-61, 8-71, 9-81, 10-91

Potential Picks:
  1. Mikkel Asmus Sondergard
  2. Patrick Shepherd
      2. Jean-Uthred Ragnarsson-Tremblay
      2. Niccolo Livius
      3. AJ Patella
      4. Rotticus Scott
      5. Franki Holtz
      6. Mike Rotchburns
      7. Ethan Barney

Berserkers Newfoundland Berserkers Berserkers

The Newfoundland Berserkers are another team that is in the middle of a rebuild and will benefit greatly from a strong draft. Looking at their roster they have plenty of holes to fill with young and active talent. The only position they have a good grasp on this offseason is at winger. They have 4 good returning players in Slatt Potts, Steve Harrington, Ryuuji Minamino, and Andrei Kostitsyn. Other than that their roster is looking rather bare in terms of active, improving players. Newfounland could go any direction in this draft and they have the picks to do it. They are walking into the S53 SMJHL Entry Draft with an astounding 13 picks including 3rd overall.

Team Needs: Centers, Defensemen, Goaltenders

Picks: 1-3, 2-13, 2-20, 3-23, 3-29, 4-33, 4-37, 5-43, 6-53, 7-63, 8-73, 9-83, 10-93

Potential Picks:
  1. Komrad Danke
  2. Ryosuke Sato
      2. Richard Majors
      3. Anders Klinkhammer
      3. Jake Deere
      3. Stein Nilsen
      4. Luffy Richard
      5. Tom Crt
      6. Travis Ross

Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows Scarecrows

The St. Louis Scarecrow have been one of the most stable franchises in the SMJHL over the last 5 seasons and it came to fruition last season when they lost in the Four Star Cup Finals to the Outlaws. The first and foremost important storyline surrounding the Scarecrows this offseason is the search for a new GM. Their previous GM had been the longest standing GM in the SMJHL and had led the Scarecrows to a lot of success. It will be interesting to see what the new GM can bring to the organization going forward. Back on the on-ice side of things the future looks good for the St. Louis. They have a strong young core to try and rally around their Four Star Cup defeat last season. The big question coming into next season if the Scarecrows goaltending situation can be salvaged in the short term. Elizabeth Doyle was called up to the SHL this off season leaving a pretty sizable hole in net. Currently the only goaltender on the roster is Jason Voorhees and while that is a very fitting name for this franchise to have he is a very unfit player for SMJHL success. I would imagine that trying to snag a goaltender in the draft will be a top priority. Their first pick is the 9th overall so it’ll be interesting to see if one of the top tier goaltending prospects falls to them. Other than their goaltending situation, St. Louis is in good shape as far as skaters go. They have 2 top tier wingers in Ruslan Zaporozhets and Sasha Dangelchek that will be centered by the strong Danny Marston going forward. After the Scarecrows find their goaltender of the future they could really go in any direction with the rest of their picks.

Team Needs: Goaltenders, Defensemen, Centers

Picks: 1-9, 2-15, 3-25, 3-26, 3-30, 4-35, 5-45, 6-55, 7-65, 8-75, 9-85, 10-95

Potential Picks:
  1. Cal Covid
  2. Aumy Jr.
  3. Sheen Beckett
      3. Simon Takshak
      3. William Lockwood
      4. Joey Gabbo
      5. Denzel Phillips
      6. Ryan Hunt
      7. Jarrod Hiddleston

Whalers Vancouver Whalers Whalers

The Vancouver Whalers are coming off of their 3rd 2nd round exit in the last 5 years after a middling finish to the season. While the jump from 10th overall in S51 to 5th in S52 is good, this is still a team that seems to be in the midst of a rebuild. This is a team teeming with inactive players and very little depth. The Whalers could really go to any position in this draft and it would be a good choice. They basically have 1 strong candidate in each position except for Goaltender. So I suppose obtaining a goaltender of the future is a priority. After that they desperately need defensemen and centers. This is a team to watch in the draft to see what their new strategy going forward will be. Do they build from the back end or front end. Can they repeat their 5th finish from last season? While this team may be in the middle of a rebuild any prospect that get picked here should be given a good chance at ice time and the ability to help form the culture going forward.

Team Needs: Goaltending, Defensemen, Centers

Picks: 1-5, 2-16, 4-36, 5-46, 6-56, 7-66, 8-76, 9-86, 10-96

Potential Picks:
  1. Cale Amundsen
  2. Slimey Snail
      4. Kyle Browning
      5. Jeremy Shepherd
      6. Xander Brooks
      7. Carter Hart

In closing, this is a very exciting draft for multiple different reasons from the individual players starting their new careers to the organization try to jockey for the pieces to put them over the top in the next Four Star Cup.
