"autistic" used to refer to someone who has Autism Spectrum Disorder would be the literal use of the term. To use it nonliterally and negatively, as an insult, like you're describing here, is a problematic type of use. you're using all the right points to come to the exact wrong conclusion lol

It's not about age, it's about this culture of systematic discrimination and failure to hold people accountable for the ways they treat other human beings that many of us are just 100% fed up with. There are plenty of actual boomers age-wise who are also fighting the bad stuff, and they don't make it about them because they know it's not about them.

Boomer isn't a slur. It's only even an insult if you're part of the mindset it's referring to when somebody uses it that way. It's not "haha that person is older than me and I don't like old people!" it's largely "oh great you're another person who thinks that everybody who ever remarks on the ills of society is just a whiney baby and who thinks they should be able to say or do anything they want without these obnoxious politically correct crybabies calling me out on my discriminatory behavior."

i feel like it should be obvious but...when we say "autistic" we're referring to literally someone just being silly. If it were really about retardation, there are a lot people that are actually mentally handicapped we could be calling out. It's not about mental handicaps, it's about this culture of people being silly and offended by every little word when it means nothing more. There are plenty of actual mentality handicapped people who are also fighting the bad stuff, and they don't make it about them because they know it's not about them. It's a sad disease but ostrosizing and coddling them because they're different doesn't do any good for anybody or make them feel normal (yes I have an autistic nephew)

It's not "haha that person is mentally handicapped and I don't like mentally handicapped people!" it's largely "oh great you're another person who is acting silly and heres a throwaway word I'll use which is obviously not literal" unless you take it as a whiney baby who thinks they should be offended by anything they want as long as these obnoxious politically correct crybabies support me and make it seem like discriminatory behavior."

Let me make it clear to you... Using a neutral word that describes a group of peoples' identities (not opinions but their identities/conditions) and assigning a negative connotation to the word is the problem. Because now you've turned a neutral term into a negative term and every time someone who is, for example, autistic hears it used that way, it reinforces the idea that someone who is autistic is of less value than people who don't have autism. And that's the issue.

And the comment "Autistic isn't a slur. It's only even an insult if you're mentally handicapped." shows just how much you don't understand this. Autistic is not a negative thing to be and should not be offensive to people who are autistic. Again, someone who has autism is not a bad person or doomed to live a shitty life just because they have autism.

I don't know all the details about the specific cases but it does feel like we could be going a bit overboard with some of these suspensions. At the end of the day these cases shouldn't be about the word itself, but about the intent with which it was sad. If someone uses "gay" or "retarded" as a throwaway term in some Discord conversation to describe something that he doesn't like then that's not cool, but it's very different from using those words to specifically target other people and go after them with personal attacks. Just inventing more and more -ism's and throwing them into peoples faces isn't particularly helpful.

With that being said, it's pretty obvious that most of these people are just coming back to troll, stir the pot and feel cool and edgy, so it's tough to feel much sympathy for them - because the intentions are obvious and go beyond accidentally using the word.

people really over here rewriting my posts to accidentally make themselves look even more like deliberately obtuse asshats who can’t stand being told they aren’t funny and they don’t even have the decency to @ me, what has this world come to.

There is a zero tolerance for these words for a reason. Let me just explain it by copy and pasting my last comment in this thread.

That also applies to gay or retard.

Which is exactly what people are doing with the word boomer.

None of them should be used.
