Ireland Player Performance so Far (IIHL Double Media)
#1

Ireland is eight games into the tournament and it is a good time to take a look at how each player is performing on an individual level.

Centers
Yoshimitsu McCloud - it has been a slow start to the tournament for the first line center, but in the last three games, he seems to have broken out.  On an average of 20 minutes of ice time, he was sitting at an assist and a minus 1 rating after five games, he went on a tear over the last three.  A goal and three assists added to his total and he now has five points on the tourney.  He has spent a good amount of time in the box in bringing a physical presence.  They will be hoping that Yoshimitsu continues to take a few more shots each game and gets more aggressive in the offensive zone.

Keith Lee - Playing second line minutes at just under 10/game, he also is only sitting at a single assist.  With a minus five rating, they need to see some better defensive play out of him and his line going forward.  Like McCloud, they need him to be taking more than five shots in eight games.

Alexander Roach - The only center with a goal in this tournament, he's been playing less than eight minutes a game on the third line.  Sitting at a minus 2 he's not in terrible shape but some goal scoring would help those numbers.

Right Wingers

Austin Roenick - Tied for the team lead in points and leading the team in goals with seven, he has been a major source for offense for Ireland.  Not shy with taking his shots, he has rung up 25 in eight games and is sitting at a plus three.  This is encouraging as he is one of their top players seeing the most minutes so they want him with the puck on his stick often.  A great start to this year's tourney so far.

Richard Metcalf Jr - He has been very productive as well with three goals and an assist through his eight games so far.  He is also a plus three which is very solid.  One area where he could improve is the number of turnovers he has given up.  If he can take better care of the puck, I would expect his numbers to go up even further.

Bobby Watson - he has been blanked on the score sheet which is concerning.  He needs to step up and produce if Ireland is going to have a shot at advancing.

Denver Wolfe - Playing just six minutes a game, he has pitched in with an assist so far in his eight games.  He has gone minus three in that short amount of playing time though so they need him to tighten up if he wants to see more ice time.

Left Wingers

Mika Mayfield - Solid production out of the winger on the first line.  He has put up four goals and two assists for a total of six points through his eight games.  He has led the team in shots so he is getting plenty of chances.  The hope is a few more will go in as long as he keeps putting them on net.  He is also a key contributor on the power play.

Kenny Creller - The second line winger has been a nice facilitator this year with four assists while also playing at a plus four.  This is the kind of thing they count on him for.  He brings stability to the middle of the line up.

Rainbow Dash - Just one goal for the third line winger in eight games.  That needs to improve so he will be hoping to find gold at the end of the rainbow over the final games in the round robin.

Hercules Rockefeller - He is another guy who brings some physical presence to his game, leading the team with 31 hits.  The other teams are afraid when he is on the ice.  Not only that but he has also managed to score a goal and add two assists.  He has also laid the body down and blocked 15 shots so we know Elizabeth Doyle appreciates having him out there as well.

Patric Twist - Playing fourth line minutes, he has overachieved at this point with a goal and an assist.  Not too bad considering he has only been on the ice for about six minutes a game.

Right Defense
Corey Kennedy - part of the top line defense pairing, Corey has put up some serious numbers this tourney.  Averaging over a point per game, he sits with a goal and eight assists at this point with a minus 2 rating.  Considering two of his assists came on the power play, he's been basically even in the tourney.  Very nice production and they are hoping it keeps up.

Jack Tanner - Jack mans the second d pair and has only put up one assist thus far.  His minus one rating is not terrible.  Just solid play from him so far.  Hopefully he can be on the ice for a few more goals and get that plus minus in to the positive.

Guy O'Shea - the third line defenseman who is playing in just his second IIHF tourney has produced three assists so far in about ten and a half minutes of ice time a game.  An even rating is also a positive for the young defenseman.  He will be searching for his first goal in international play in the next couple games.

Left Defense
Tig Murphy - the top line defenseman is one of the top players on the team.  Five points on a goal and four assists means he is producing on the offensive side of the sheet.  He is also physical on the ice, 18 hits to go along with 21 shots blocked.  A true Irishman who is known to down a pint or two before stepping on the ice.

Jon Toner - the second pair defenseman has been kept off of the score sheet so far but has played a physical game to date.  The team is hoping for more production out of the entire second line going forward.

Liam O'Callaghan - certainly one of the most Irish sounding names on the entire team, Liam has played limited minutes next to Guy O'Shea.  He has an assist to his name and has been a shot blocking machine with 16 so far.  He should have a bright future with the squad in the years to come.

Goalie

Elizabeth Doyle - the young netminder has been an anchor for this team.  After crushing the SHL season with Buffalo, she has put up respectable numbers so far with a .911 save percentage and a 2.98 goals against average.  With some easier games coming up, the hope is all of those numbers look better.  Unfortunately Ireland has given up a ton of shots against which has kept her busy in every game.  That is another area that they will want to clean up.

Overall the team is doing better than last year and is hoping to sneak through to the next round and see if they can knock off one of the power houses.  It will take some strong performances for each of their top players as well as some of the guys who have been a little quiet to this point.  Let's go Ireland!!
