FHM-Era stat leaders
#1

Since the SMJHL records pages haven't been updated in a long time, I wanted to take a look at who leads the league in every single season stat, from season 53 until now. I'm not taking playoffs into account so I could have done this a few weeks ago, but I didn't think about it until now! Something that's interesting to note is that each team in the SMJHL is represented on this list at least once.

Player Stats

Goals
1. Mats Marner © - 32 - S55 - Berserkers
2. Edward Williams © - 30 - S53 - Falcons
T-3. Jaska Seppala (LW) - 27 - S54 - Knights
T-3. Sven Svenson (LW) - 27 - S55 - Raptors
5. Mitchell van der Heijden © - 26 - S53 - Armada

This season, Newfoundland's Mats Marner was able to break the goals record set by Detroit's Edward Williams back in season 53. Detroit's Sven Svenson was able to come close but ultimately fell short, tying Kelowna's Jaska Seppala for 3rd.

Assists
1. Matthew Forester © - 38 - S54 - Berserkers
2. Ryuuji Minamino (RW) - 35 - S55 - Berserkers
3. Edward Williams © - 34 - S53 - Falcons
4. Chris de Siren (RW) - 33 - S55 - Armada
T-5. Rocco Berni © - 32 - S54 - Knights
T-5. Linus Grimstad © - 32 - S55 - Kraken

No assists records were broken this year, although there are quite a few names on here from season 55. Newfoundland's Ryuuji Minamino came the closest to breaking his teammate Matthew Forester's record, but fell three short. Anchorage's Chris de Siren and Carolina's Linus Grimstad were also able to make the list this season, coming in at 33 and 32 assists respectively.

Points
1. Edward Williams © - 64 - S53 - Falcons
2. Mats Marner © - 62 - S55 - Berserkers
T-3. Chris de Siren © - 56 - S55 - Armada
T-3. Ryuuji Minamino (RW) - 56 - S55 - Berserkers
5. Linus Grimstad © - 54 - S55 - Kraken

Detroit's Edward Williams is the only player on both the goals and assists leaderboard, so it's no surprise that he comes in at the top of this list. Though Newfoundland's Mats Marner came extremely close, finishing only two shy of Williams. What's interesting to note here is that every player on this list came from season 55 except leader Edward Williams, maybe scoring was a bit higher because of the two new expansion teams.

+/-
1. Guy O'Shea (RD) - +44 - S53 - Falcons
2. Pojo Biscuit (LD) - +39 - S55 - Armada
3. Toki Wartooth (LD) - +37 - S53 - Falcons
4. Bork Lazer (RD) - +36 - S55 - Armada
5. Linus Grimstad © - +35 - S55 - Kraken

+/- has always been more of a team stat, so it's no surprise that players from some of the best teams are represented here. It's also not a huge surprise that most of the players here are defensemen since they play the most, but what is surprising and impressive is that Carolina centreman Linus Grimstad was able to make this list this season. This is another stat set in season 53 that nobody has yet to top, but Anchorage's Pojo Biscuit came the closest this season with his +39.

Powerplay Points
1. Mats Marner © - 27 - S55 - Berserkers
T-2. Mitchell van der Heijden © - 25 - S53 - Armada
T-2. Ryuuji Minamino (RW) - 25 - S55 - Berserkers
4. Ryuuji Minamino (RW) - 22 - S54 - Berserkers
T-5. Jimmy Wagner (RW) - 20 - S54 - Kraken
T-5. Santtu Rasanen © - 20 - S54 - Armada

What surprises me the most about this stat is the fact that Detroit's season 53 star Edward Williams is nowhere to be found. This just makes his 64 points all the more impressive, but that's not to take away from Newfoundland's Mats Marner's impressive season where he broke the record for most powerplay points. His linemate, Ryuuji Minamino, was also able to tie the season 54 record after falling short that season. It's also impressive that he was able to make this list twice, showing great consistency.

Penalty Minutes
1. Boris Petrov (RD) - 211 - S55 - Citadelles
2. Valentin Kalashnikov (RD) - 135 - S55 - Timber
3. Juni Panda (RW) - 106 - S55 - Raptors
4. Edward Williams © - 95 - S53 - Falcons
5. Adam Friedland (LD) - 94 - S53 - Kraken

I don't know what was in the water this season, but three players absolutely blew the previous penalty minutes record out of the water. Quebec City's Boris Petrov spent the most time in the box out of anyone, with his 211 penalty minutes - more than four penalty minutes per game. It's also funny to see Detroit's Edward Williams' name here, since at one point he was both the points leader and the penalty minutes leader. A real Gordie Howe.

Hits
1. Boris Petrov (RD) - 326 - S55 - Citadelles
2. Juni Panda (RW) - 242 - S55 - Raptors
3. Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette (LD) - 216 - S53 - Scarecrows
4. Valentin Kalashnikov (RD) - 212 - S55 - Timber
5. Edward Williams © - 194 - S53 - Falcons

Here is another physical stat with a lot of season 55 representation, once again with Quebec City's Boris Petrov sitting pretty on top with a massive 326 hits. This is an average of 6.52 hits per game! The usual suspects fall below him (no pun intended), and it's looking like Boris Petrov is the Wayne Gretzky of enforcers.

Fights
1. Boris Petrov (RD) - 15 (9 won) - S55 - Citadelles
2. Valentin Kalashnikov (RD) - 15 (8 won) - S55 - Timber
3. Adam Friedland (LD) - 14 (7 won) - S54 - Kraken
4. Adam Friedland (LD) 12 (9 won) - S53 - Kraken
5. Adam Friedland (LD) 10 (7 won) - S55 - Kraken

It's pretty clear to see at this point why Quebec City's Boris Petrov spent so much time in the box, and I'm used to seeing his name on top of the physical stats at this point. What's more interesting to me at this point is that Carolina's Adam Friedland is on this list three times, for all three seasons in the FHM Era. He has dropped his gloves 36 times in the past three seasons, and that's not even including playoffs. He's also led the league in fights in two out of three seasons. Adam Friedland is an absolute unit.

Blocked Shots
1. Will Windsor (LD) - 185 - S54 - Timber
2. Will Windsor (LD) - 160 - S55 - Timber
3. Emilia Bergman (RD) - 138 - S55 - Outlaws
4. Will Windsor (LD) - 132 - S53 - Timber
5. Tinke Jutila (LD) - 130 - S53 - Berserkers

Now we've gotten to the sorest players, the goalies' best friends, the players with the most blocked shots. And it looks like nobody can block a shot like Maine's Will Windsor. He has led the league in blocked shots in all three seasons of the FHM Era SMJHL. Might as well throw some goalie pads on this guy and see what happens. And that's also a great transition to our next few stats.

Goalie Stats

Save Percentage (minimum 13 games played)
1. Scoochie Stratton - 0.933 - S55 - Armada
2. Thor Odinson - 0.927 - S53 - Falcons
3. Separa Borro - 0.923 - S55 - Outlaws
4. Blunt Man - 0.920 - S55 - Kraken
5. Frans Eller - 0.920 - S53 - Kraken

By far the most important stat for arguably the most important position in hockey, the save percentage. This season, Anchorage's Scoochie Stratton was able to blow away the 1st place stat with an insane .933 save percentage in 41 games played. Also important to note that Detroit's Thor Odinson was a backup in season 53, but he did still play over a quarter of his team's games so he qualifies for this list. Anaheim's Separa Borro and Carolina's Blunt Man were also able to crack the leaderboard this season, with a .923 and .920 save percentage respectively. Blunt Man was just barely able to edge out the man he used to back up, with a .0002 higher save percentage.

Goals Against Average (minimum 13 games played)
1. Thor Odinson - 1.47 - S53 - Falcons
2. Scoochie Stratton - 1.62 - S55 - Armada
3. A Jobin - 1.92 - S53 - Falcons
4. Ragnar-Alexandre Ragnarss - 1.99 - S55 - Kraken
5. Blunt Man - 1.99 - S55 - Kraken

Another stat with Detroit's season 53 backup Thor Odinson on top, but that's not to take away from his amazing performance that season. In more games than not, he was able to allow 1 or fewer goals that season, which is insane. The man he was backing up at the time, A Jobin, was also able to make this list with a 1.92 goals against average, showing just how impressive that Detroit team was. Scoochie Stratton was able to top this though, with his amazing 1.62 goals against average. The final two spots on this list are taken up by Carolina's backup and starter from season 55, and backup Ragnar-Alexandre Ragnarss was able to just barely edge out starter Blunt Man.

Wins
1. Scoochie Stratton - 30 - S55 - Armada
2. Cale Amundsen - 28 - S54 - Berserkers
3. Peter Ramsey - 28 - S55 - Knights
4. Frans Eller - 28 - S54 - Kraken
5. Cillian Kavanagh - 27 - S53 - Knights

Another record broken this season, by none other than Anchorage's own Scoochie Stratton. He was able to beat Newfoundland's Cale Amundsen and Carolina's Frans Eller's previous records by two wins, while Kelowna's Peter Ramsey tied them. Also note here that 2, 3, and 4 are not all listed as T-2 because Amundsen was able to get 28 wins in fewer games than Ramsey, and Ramsey was able to get 28 wins in fewer games than Eller.

Shutouts
1. Scoochie Stratton - 9 - S55 - Armada
2. Peter Ramsey - 8 - S55 - Knights
3. Blunt Man - 6 - S55 - Kraken
4. Cillian Kavanagh - 6 - S54 - Knights
5. Cale Amundsen - 6 - S55 - Berserkers

I hope you're used to seeing Anchorage's Scoochie Stratton on top of these lists by now, because he's there to stay. 9 shutouts is unbelievable, and shatters Kelowna's Cillian Kavanagh's previous record of 6 in a season. His teammate Peter Ramsey was also able to top this record, with a very impressive 8 shutouts. Carolina's Blunt Man and Newfoundland's Cale Amundsen were also able to tie this record, and it's in the same 3, 4, 5 format as the previous list because Man got 6 shutouts in fewer games played than Kavanagh, and Kavanagh got 6 shutouts in fewer games played than Amundsen. This is another list that's dominated by players in season 55, and could also be because of the two new expansion teams.

Games Played
1. Nicolae Antonescu - 45 (2626 minutes) - S55 - Scarecrows
2. Name Redacted - 45 (2385 minutes) - S54 - Whalers
3. Name Redacted - 44 (2638 minutes) - S53 - Whalers
4. Frans Eller - 44 (2592 minutes) - S54 - Kraken
5. Cillian Kavanagh - 44 (2568 minutes) - S53 - Knights

Now we've gotten to the most resilient goalies, with St. Louis' Nicolae Antonescue coming in on top for his 45 games played and 2626 minutes played this season. This was enough to come up on top of the list, as it's more minutes than Vancouver's Name Redacted in his 45 games played in season 54, but strangely was not the most minutes played in a season. That record goes to Redacted in season 53, as he played 2638 minutes in 44 games played, 12 more minutes than Antonescu.

Game Rating (all positions) (minimum 13 games played)
1. Mitchell van der Heijden © - 79 - S53 - Armada
2. Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette (LD) - 76 - S53 - Scarecrows
3. Scoochie Stratton (G) - 75 - S55 - Armada
T-4. Cale Amundsen (G) - 74 - S53 - Berserkers
T-4. Frans Eller (G) - 74 - S53 - Kraken
T-4. Leo Bloomfield (G) - 74 - S54 - Timber
T-4. Alexander Roach © - 74 - S55 - Citadelles
T-4. Name Redacted (G) - 74 - S55 - Whalers
T-4. Separa Borro (G) - 74 - S55 - Outlaws
T-4. C.K. Supernaw (G) - 74 - S55 - Battleborn

I'm not sure how much importance game rating has to people on here, but I figured it was the easiest way to compare forwards, defensemen, and goalies. Coming in at the top of this list is Anchorage's Mitchell van der Heijden, who was 2nd in season 53 in goals and 5th in the FHM era. He must have had great defensive stats to put him a full 3 game rating ahead of everyone else. Next is St. Louis' Luc-Pierre Lespineau-Lebrunette, who led season 53 in hits and is 3rd in the FHM era. After him is Anchorage's Scoochie Stratton for his amazing season 55 performance, who we've seen a lot on this list and makes the most sense out of everyone so far. After Stratton there are many familiar names on this list, including Newfoundland's Cale Amundsen (though not for the season that he got 6 shutouts), Carolina's Frans Eller, for the season he got a .920 save percentage (but not for the season he got 28 wins in 44 games played), Vancouver's Name Redacted (though not for the seasons he led in games played), and Anaheim's Separa Borro, for his .923 save percentage this season. There are also quite a few names that have not appeared anywhere else on this list, including Maine's Leo Bloomfield, for his performance as starting goalie, Quebec City's Alexander Roach, for his amazing two-way play, and Nevada's C.K. Supernaw, for his solid performance as backup goalie.

I also wanted to take a look at how many times each team appears on here, out of curiosity: Kraken - 16 times, Armada - 13 times, Berserkers - 12 times, Falcons - 10 times, Knights - 7 times, Timber - 7 times, Citadelles - 4 times, Raptors - 3 times, Scarecrows - 3 times, Outlaws - 3 times, Whalers - 3 times, Battleborn - 1 time. This is interesting to me because the three teams I bolded, Carolina, Newfoundland, and Detroit, are the three teams that have won the Four-Star Cup since the start of the FHM Era. Makes sense that the three of the four teams with the most star power have won the cup. Also makes sense that Detroit has the least amount of star players out of the three teams since they won the cup in season 53 and haven't been as competitive ever since. Also wanted to say congratulations to Newfoundland, you waited a long time for that Cup and were very deserving. Perhaps Anchorage is the most overdue team now?
