The Calgary Dragons selected three prospects that have shown promise before the draft in some capacity, but have shown even more promise after the draft. We know a lot of fans don’t know a lot about the juniors, especially later round picks, so that’s why we’re here. We will provide a quick snippet of the three draft picks the Calgary Dragons had in the Season 56 Entry Draft, and you yourself can decide how hyped you want to get about them.

---------------

Name: Sachimo Zoidberg III
Position: LD
Height: 6’0
Weight: 200 lbs
Birthplace: Calgary, Canada

Meet Sachimo Zoidberg III. A left defencemen drafted by the Calgary Dragons with their 13th overall pick. Zoidberg was a huge pick for them as the team added one of the best defenders in the entire draft class. The fact that he even dropped to 13 is an absolute steal.

For a defender, his offensive ratings are through the charts. He is one of the best passers out of his entire draft class, not just defenders. He’s able to thread the needle like nobody’s business and will add a huge offensive boost to any line. He has a great shooting range and just has great reads in general in the offensive zone. He watches the play develops and is able to react and anticipate the play, leading to great scoring chances.

On the defensive side, don’t be fooled by Zoidberg’s offensive skills. He’s not just a fourth forward out there. He is a defencemen at heart and good luck trying to get by him 1 on 1. He has the checking, the stickchecking, the positioning that any defender would want at his age and even players already in the SHL. With just a few more seasons of training, Zoidberg can be a superstar defender. His defensive reads are even better than his offensive ones. It’s just like he knows what you’re trying to do and he will get that puck back and keep it out of his net.

Onto his physical stuff, he has it all. He’s got speed, he’s got agility and he’s got stamina. He’ll accelerate quickly to beat you on the first step, then pull ahead with his top end speed. Oh? He needs to turn on a dime, no problem at all. Oh? You need him to play 25+ minutes, no problem at all. Zoidberg’s got it all, he’s a complete package and he is going to be a superstar.

---------------

Name: Thomas Rose
Position: RW
Height: 6’3
Weight: 215 lbs
Birthplace: Switzerland

With the 31st overall pick, the Calgary Dragons have selected right winger from Switzerland. This young rookie is no pushover. With a 6’3, 215 frame, he has used his size in the juniors to his advantage, and I suspect he’s going to use it in the big leagues as well. More of a offensive player than a defensive player, this guy is going to be a star if he puts in the hard work. The Calgary Dragons are high on this man and are hoping he can develop into a big time player in their soon to be new core.

The offensive stats of Rose are well above average. He still needs a bit more work to be a complete superstar, but there is still good reason as to why he was selected in the second round. He uses his size effectively in front of the net, to give the opposing netminder a hard time. Even with a big frame though, he is still able to find soft spots in the offensive zone in order to get open. He doesn’t need a lot of space because his big frame allows him to outmuscle defenders. His passing is good, not great. He will not always make a tape to tape pass, but he will still be able to get it to you. His puck handling and shooting accuracy are both well above average, but his overall hockey iq in the offensive zone is one of the best things he provides. He uses his hockey iq to anticipate where defenders are going and that allows him to get open to make a smart offensive play.

Defensively is where Rose can use some work, but as a winger, it’s not a huge issue at this point in his career. He needs to work on his positioning as sometimes he gets caught watching the play. That is something Calgary coaches will need to put an emphasis on. However, he is able to use his big frame to body check opponents effectively. Do not try to out muscle this man, he will knock you over and bring the puck the other way. However, more often than not he isn’t there in time for a check as his defensive reads are nowhere near his offensive reads. He’s getting there, as he is much better than when he first started, but this needs quite a bid of work.

Athletically, he is quite fast for his size. He won’t win any fastest skater awards, but he will still give you a hard race to the puck. His agility needs work as he is still not able to make the quickest turns due to his big size, but his stamina is what makes him great. His stamina makes up for it all. He will outlast most forwards, including those smaller than him at any given time. And if anyone is caught tired against him, he will take advantage. Rose will not show any signs of tiring and that is a scary trait.

---------------

Name: Logan Wong
Position: LW
Height: 6’1
Weight: 195 lbs
Birthplace: Toronto, Canada

Logan Wong was the biggest “shot in the dark” draft pick for the Calgary Dragons this season. With the first pick in the third round, the Calgary Dragons selected the son of legendary goaltender Hunter Wong, Logan Wong. Logan has not shown the promise as the three Wong’s before him did. Ben Wong was one of the best goal scorers of all time, Hunter Wong was one of the best goaltenders of all time, and Gabriel Wong is a Platoon legend. The Wong family have only ever been drafted to two franchises, West Kendall Platoon (now Baltimore) and Calgary Dragons. So it is only fitting that the darkhorse pick for the Calgary Dragons was a Wong. And ever since the draft, Logan Wong has shown a ton of promise, almost getting into another gear when it comes to work ethic.

The offence of Logan Wong is the best attribute he has. Maybe it’s cause he always practice against his dad or he took the knowledge of his grandfather, his offence has always been great. His puck handling and ability to get open is good, but still has room to grow. But his offensive read is great. He see’s plays before they happen and is able to get to the puck before others. But what makes his offence elite is his shot accuracy. He has always had the ability to pick any spot at the net and shoot it there. This will be the trait that keeps Logan relevant until he puts in the work. But signs so far has shown that he is.

Logan’s defence needs a lot of work. With all members of his family being forwards or a goaltender, he was never able to learn from anyone defensively. He has slowly learned defence through the years of juniors, but this is something Calgary will really need to work on. If not, he will not be able to be trusted in the last minutes of the game as he will become a liability defensively.

Logan’s athleticism for some reason just never really took off. He had to work very hard to get the athleticism he has now. It never felt as if it was natural like all the other Wong’s. He has grown considerably over the years and the trend is looking good, but he has quite a bit of work to do. However, the two bright spots is his top end speed and stamina. He is so good at keeping his endurance up and able to go into extended shifts if ever needed. And his top end speed will help him win a lot of long puck battles. He just needs to work on his acceleration and a little more on his top end speed to be one of the top end prospects.
