[2x First Media] Calgary Dragons Pre-Season Primer
#1

Authors Note: All my other media has been 2x draft media, so I am claiming my 2x first media on this one.

HOCKEY IS BACK! The Calgary Dragons are once again set to challenge for the aptly named, Challenge Cup. Riding high off a strong playoff run last year in which they swept rivals Edmonton to reach the third round, Calgary looks to hit the ice skating once again.

The offseason was a strong one for Calgary, picking up top prospect Alexis Saint-Michel through a draft week deal and hitting on four strong prospects through the draft in Grogu Mandosson, Darwin Koff, Duncan Mackenzie, and Sam Stone.

Several young players have taken large steps this off-season, taking the mantle from the key veterans who are still on the roster. There are still some holes to fill before the first game of the season, but as things stand right now, the depth chart looks strong.

Center
[S47] Esa Parmborg – 1781 TPE
[S46] Barry Batsbak – 1558 TPE
[S57] Luukas Lilja – 1141 TPE
[S43] Steven Moyer – 1103 TPE

The spine of the team is looking very good as the season approaches. Veteran Center and lover of Chicken Parm Esa Parmborg looks to take top line duties once again. Dual role man Barry Batsbak could fill in the second line centre role or once again slide into the Left Wing slot and take up some special teams time. Luukas Lilja is an up and comer who will provide amazing depth and he continues to develop and improve on a 46 point season. Reliable vet Steven Moyer will round out the center group on the team and provide solid two way play, an important voice on the bench, and provide vital leadership in the locker room.

Right Wing
[S45] Nat Emerson – 1402 TPE
[S56] Zdenko Beranek – 1081 TPE
[S45] Maxime Bouchard – 948 TPE

Down the wing, newly acquired Free Agent Nat Emerson looks to lead the way, while Zdenko Beranek continues his development into an elite scoring threat as he looks to improve on his 36 point campaign from last season. Longtime Dragon and heart and soul player Maxime Bouchard is coming to the twilight of his career, but still provides exceptional play to a Dragon’s team that is thin on the wings. He will be honoured by the Dragons with the Tarantula Jersey to be worn at a game this season.

Left Wing
[S50] Joseph Weston – 1696 TPE
[S44] Mikael Choybuk – 942 TPE

Joseph Weston leads the left wingers as he continues in his prime years. His 59 points last season were good for third overall in points on the team, although he struggled to score in the playoffs. Mikael Choybuk is approaching his final games in the league, but is still a quality player as shown by his 14 points in last year’s playoff run. He will once again attempt to match his 40 point regular season campaign from last year. With only two natural left wingers on the team, expect to see either Barry Batsbak or Luukas Lilja slide into this group to round out the squad. Gerry Atrick also has a chance at a call up if things go sideways for this crew.

Defence
[S46] Brennan Kennedy Jr – 1511 TPE
[S55] Chris Goodname – 1302 TPE
[S56] Sachimo Zoidberg III – 1166 TPE
[S58] #A-Rye Izzy – 991 TPE
[S58] Richard LaFleur – 923 TPE
[S59] Eero Makela – 704 TPE

This is a young group and the core of Calgary’s future. Led by veteran Brennan Kennedy Jr, the rest were drafted between S55 and S59. Legacy player #A-Rye Izzy is rapidly approaching 1000TPE and players like Richard LaFleur and Eero Makela will be vital parts of this group for years to come. Chris Goodname looks to seize the role of #2 defenceman on the team and add to his 31 points from last season, while Sachimo Zoidberg III looks ready to take his game to another level.

Goaltender
Cale Amundsen – 1211 TPE
Kata Vilde – 955 TPE

The torch will be passed this season as legendary and ageless Calgary Dragon’s Goaltender Kata Vilde fights off the ravages of father time for one last lap in net. Cale Amundsen looks primed to pick up where Kata left off, as the duo should platoon the majority of the starts. Expect Vilde’s last home game start to be standing room only and the entire City of Calgary will try to be in attendance to honour the keeper’s illustrious career. Look for his name on a HOF ballot coming at the end of the season.

Prospects
[S61] LW Darwin Koff – 409 TPE
[S61] RW Sam Stone – 288 TPE
[S61] RW Duncan Mackenzie – 398 TPE
[S61] C Grogu Mandosson – 407 TPE
[S60] G Zhen Roza – 582 TPE
[S59] LW Janis Lux – 576 TPE
[S59] RW Alexis Saint-Michel – 734 TPE
[S58] LW Gerry Atrick – 710 TPE

Down in Juniors the prospects keep on getting better. Vancouver winger and goal scoring leader Alexis Saint-Michel will have one more kick at the can to take home the Four-Star Cup. He is a certainty to join the Dragons next year. With expansion occurring this year, no less than three of Calgary’s prospects will play in Great Falls, with wingers Janis Lux, Gerry Atrick and Grogu Mandosson selected in the expansion draft. Other 1st round picks Darwin Koff and Duncan Mackenzie continue to earn well and push forward their teams this year. Both are capped out and earning strongly. Goaltender Zhen Roza will keep pucks out of the Raptors net for another season as they build towards backing up Cale Amundsen next year, while Scarecrow Sam Stone continues to improve as well. The cupboards are well stocked at forward for years to come, while the defensive prospects all ply their trade in the SHL.  The future is bright for this group.
