Dragons Players Make History as Team Struggles

Times are tough in Calgary. The team, languishing in the basement of the league, is struggling to put together any sort of form through the first 26 games of the season. Sitting on a record of 7 – 17 – 2, they are more likely to be planning a draft party than a playoff party come the end of the season.

Despite having lost 8 of their last 10 games, there have been some positive things to occur. New acquisition Jon Forty-One has put together an excellent campaign, putting up 5 goals and 12 assists to sit fourth in points for the team. His latest points have pushed him over the 700 point mark for his career, a huge accomplishment that was noted in the pre-game ceremony prior to the 3 – 1 loss to Calgary last night.

Also honoured in a ceremony was longtime Dragon Barry Batsbak. Batsbak has had another fine season for Calgary thus far, putting up 12 points and moving past Calgary Dragon legend Mike Izzy into 3rd all time for points scored as a Dragon. Currently, Batsbak has 809 points, and there are certainly more to come as the season rolls on.

While you wont see any Dragons on the leader lists for offense, you can’t say that there isn’t any snarl in their game. Normally reserved forward Taylor Johansson has been a regular guest in the sin bin this year, sitting only 3 minutes behind leader Marcel Beck from Winnipeg in penalty minutes this season.  Esa Parmborg sits seventh overall in PIMs.

The first two lines of the Dragons is doing most of the heavy lifting so far. Taylor Johnasson, Esa Parmborg, Jon Forty-One and Luukas Lilja are putting up solid points, while Barry Batsbak and Artemius Nystrom are contributing nicely. It is the third line that has been caved in offensively thus far.

Despite high hopes for the rookies, things have come along slowly for the pair of S61 draft picks. Grogu Mandosson has put up 3 goals and 4 assists, but has yet to display that killer instinct that was so prominent in his last season in Great Falls.  There is no pressure on the youngster, as the team has time to watch him develop into the superstar they expect him to become.

Duncan Mackenzie is in a similar position. Putting up 3 goals and 3 assists, he has been part of a line getting caved in nightly. Alexis Saint-Michel is doing what he can to pull the other two along, but it will be a few more seasons before the trio is really putting up effective shifts on the regular. Mackenzie is putting together a physical campaign, racking up 45 hits through 26 games.

On the back end, Aumy Jr is putting up a fantastic campaign, leading the D with 15 points and 47 hits.  Chris Goodame and Richard Lafleur are also having great seasons for the Dragons, despite the overall result. Eero Makela and Izzy Jr, however, are struggling, often stuck out on the ice with the rookie line and feeling the effects of covering the expected mistakes.

In net, Zhen Roza has put in a blue collar effort, maintaining a .910 sv% and a shutout as he is peppered with pucks. There is still room for Roza to develop and the experiences from this season should help him come along in that regard.

Backup Phillip Weaver is struggling, but has put a win up on the board for the Dragons.  Look to see him continue to get starts as the season continues.

The struggles are real in Calgary, but the future does look good for this team. We should expect to see some improvements as this team transitions to its future.
