April is seen by the media as “Autism Awareness Month”, with catchy slogans like #LightItUpBlue. This is all wrong - using the term “awareness” frames it as something that others us, something that makes us lesser. Instead, we should strive for Autism Acceptance - acknowledging that the human brain is a diverse and beautiful thing and those differences make our lives unique, and we should strive to amplify this message and make April about acceptance, not awareness. Follow the #RedInstead movement, use symbols that include the infinity sign and NOT the puzzle piece, and seek out neurodiverse content creators, among other things. To all the ND people on the site, I see you and I love you.
