S66 PT #4: Just Wanna Have Fun

PLAYER PROMPT

Jonathon Hagan is a guy that likes to have fun, and it is no secret to the league, especially those close to him, and anyone who has ever read his past in these prompts. Hagan likes to customize his gear with things that reference the fun he has outside of the rink. His recently released alcoholic beverage, a homage to pink whitney, is promoted by a sticker on the back of his helmet. He also likes to have some customization on his hockey stick. One of the common ones is statements that one might hear from someone who parties a lot in general - "One more round." Although in this case, it is also a good statement of the mentality he wants to have out on the ice. He also has slapped a little Coors Light sticker on some of his sticks, as it is one of his favorite drinks to have when he is out.

CREATIVE PROMPT

It's hard to these days to be a professional hockey player with all the pressure created by the social media. It's much easier to criticize players and vent your frustrations. In a way to try and protect players from this online abuse, Winnipeg Aurora executives have mandated that the final 20 minutes of practice are dedicated to create highlight reels for all the players so they can post the clips on social media, so people can praise their hard working players. While it might not always work, it has created some great moments that had the fans talking and it's also a good way to work on some skills that you might not necessarily work on during a normal practice, like breakaways or flashy dangles. It's also sometimes mentioned that hockey players don't have a lot of swagger compared to other pro athletes, so some try to use this opportunity to put the spotlight on them. For example, some choose to do ice dancing or skate on their hands, just to get the people talking.

After the end of long and grueling regular season, the Texas Renegades are currently gearing up for their first round playoff matchup against their longtime archrivals in the Chicago Syndicate. To keep the mood light and avoid overworking the team, the Renegades coaching staff have decide to wrap up the practice session with a classic Canadian pastime - curling. The players have split up into four teams, with two curling rinks set up lengthwise along the ice surface. Instead of throwing rocks down the ice, the Renes version has players shooting a puck from one goal line down the ice to try and get it to stop in the opposite faceoff circle. Not only is this good practice for weighting clears from the defensive to avoid icing calls, but a bunch of Renes players brought out some brooms to help sweep the ice and guide the puck to its target. This is sure to be good preparation for their upcoming sweep of the Syndicate in the playoffs.

The all time favorite of the Newfoundland Berserkers - Chicago Syndicate pipeline is the ongoing games of red rover. Despite it normally being something that's played in a park and on flat ground, and especially normally by children, it's been one that has been carried through the histories of the two teams. The locker room always finds a way to up the ante on these games, whether it's side bets or simply being in the moment, trying to get one on top of one another. The meta strategy that also develops over time in terms of picking specific players for being called is one thing, but always comes down to the players holding on for one another, and showing the strength of unity, but also recognizing the individual brilliance that could occur at any moment if there is a single weak link. The biggest part is the joy of hazing the new players on the team who clearly have no expectations of playing such a game but still get into it anyways.

The Winnipeg Aurora have an after practice fun game they play, where everyone who wants in gets a shot at winning, and to the winner goes the spoils of a gold first place ribbon hanging on their locker next to their nameplate, until the next competition. This game is of who can get the biggest bounce off the crossbar. You take a shot from the blueline, and it has to go off the crossbar and bounce as far down the ice the other way as possible. If you miss the crossbar completely, tough luck for you. Fortunately there's only light teasing, as most of the team misses the crossbar every time. While a nice bar down shot looks nice, it won't score you very many points. Posts don't count. Vertical height doesn't count. You want to hit that crossbar as square as possible to get it all the way down the ice. Kampainen has held the honours the most this season (probably), and aside from the goalies who do like to join the fun but don't win very much, O'Neil has the fewest wins on the team this season.

Throughout the season, practices can start to get contentious and can have otherwise friendly players start to get on each others nerves and begin to have quarrels amongst them. In order to blow off steam, when those tensions start to get too high, we organize a little tournament of guard your ground. In this game, we have two players face off against each other in order to push the other one out of one of the faceoff circles. Only pushing is allowed, and it is a best 2 of 3 for each round. This allows the team to let out a few frustrations, cheer on their buds, and have a pretty good time.

Nickelback has proven to be one of the worst players at this. While a fierce player on the ice, he doesn't seem to really have it in him to push teammates around. He usually tries to talk his opponent into leaving the circle willingly, a task that he has yet to be successful at through all his years on the team.

Atticus has always had little quirks when it comes to his equipment. For instance, on his stick, he will carve his last name “HALE” on it. Additionally, he always tapes both the handle and the blade of his stick in a unique design that features overlapping Xs. On his gloves, similar to his stick, Atticus will stitch his last name “HALE” on the inside cuff. This is something he started as a young kid coming up through the peewee leagues and continues to do to this day. Each set of gloves he uses as a member of the New Orleans Specters has his name stitched in a purple thread. He does a similar thing with his skates. On the inside of the tongue of each skate, the name “HALE” is stitched in a purple thread. One thing’s for sure - unless someone is aware of these little quirks, it would be hard for someone to steal his equipment and pass it off as their own. On top of that, it would make authenticating his gear easier.

Greyson Coopers reminder isn’t a really happy memory but something that he holds really close to his heart. When he was in middle school he lost one of his best friends & line mates. His team wore patches with the #16 on it & stickers on their helmets the next season but Greyson put the #16 in sharpie on the his tape on his hockey stick. He still does it to this day before every game & even for practices, every time he changes the tape he has a reminder to try his best & make every moment matter. Sure it’s not the happiest memory but it’s a big reason for why he is where he is today & how he plays with so much passion. Some people may think it’s weird but he truly believes it’s a great reminder for all the good times they had. He will have #16 on his stick until he no longer plays anymore.

Growing up in the home of a professional player as your father puts a lot of expectations both from the outside and internally. Leon has always had eyes on him and the pressure has become somewhat numb to him as he's grown up. Leon's dad always tried to remind him why he plays and never forced him into hockey, but Leon was always drawn to it. He always heard about his dad's scoring, however all Mikhail ever spoke about was winning a Challenge Cup. Starting around age 10, Leon started tracking his dad's points on his stick and with his number of cups right after. He saw the points keep going up, but never the cups. He continues to do this to this day as a reminder that goals and assists are fun and nice to look at, but at the end of the day they aren't the same as having just one cup.

At the end of every practice, you will see Bavel Pure go around a pick up a half dozen or so water bottles. He will then place said bottles in and around the net and then shot pucks in attempt to knock rack water bottle down. Kind of like an old carnival game. Think skills competition for shooting accuracy, but with water bottles instead of targets. The St. Louis Scarecrows have latched onto Bavel’s little game and as a team, have a little contest at the end of each practice. The winner of each target shooting exercise gets to choose the locker room music for the next game or practice and with the eclectic musical tastes of the St. Louis Scarecrows, each contest is highly contested. It’s more that there are people that others don’t want to win since they have a taste in music that most others wouldn’t agree with. It’s a pretty entertaining game that not many get to see and had become quite a bonding experience for the Crows.

Like explained in past TPs, DAD’s playing professional hockey to fulfill his dad’s dreams. He always wanted DAD to be a professional hockey player because DAD had so much potential when he was a kid. So when he’s preparing his equipment for game night, DAD writes « DAD » on his stick to remind him his father. Unfortunately, DAD’s father did not have the chance to see him playing professional hockey, so DAD tries to bring him for every game by writing his dad’s name on his stick. Fun fact about DAD : when he’s feeling that he would score a goal, DAD, with a sharpie, draws a part of his stick tape black. He thinks that by drawing his tape, the chances to score a goal will grow. Every hockey player is superstitious in a certain way, am I wrong? DAD’s not the most superstitious, but in a certain way, he his.

Aleksi Kettu does a number of things to help remind him to have fun both in and out of the game of hockey. When he first got drafted by the Carolina Kraken, his niece gave him a congratulations card with a hand drawn kraken on it. Kettu then took the drawing to a local jeweler, who actually managed to make a necklace based on the drawing. Kettu never takes that necklace off. On top of that, he stops by the local kids rink in Charlotte every week that the team is at home to skate around during the stick-and-pick times, often playing some pickup games or “keep away” with the local kids, who never expect Kettu to show up but always have a blast when he does. Kettu plans to continue this tradition in the Los Angeles area when he gets his call up, though he will have to get some help from current Panthers on which rinks to go to.

Creative Prompt:

When the Montreal Patriotes have had a long and tiring practice, Roddy likes to try and lift spirits by donning goalie gear, and giving Brick Wall a chance to try some dangles, while Roddy tries his best to stop pucks. Everyone generally has a good time, and it's always good for some laughs, watching Roddy flop and roll around the crease like Hasek. While Roddy has some excellent defensive skills, they do not translate well inside the blue paint. Best to leave goaltending to the pros for the time being. Brick, on the other hand, has a decent shot and some hands. But more than anything, the sight of Brick scooting around on his goalie skates, ripping shots top shelf past Roddy is always able to get a laugh out of the gang. It's important to end a tough practice on a positive note, and a laugh never goes down poorly.

so the coaches (@goldenglutes and @hotdog) really did run all of the players dry this time around and really gave them the run a round and made them run a round around the rink but with skates on so it was really skating and not running but ooh wee that really did a number on all of the players and really tired them out even though most of the players of the atlanta inferno are in fairly good shape. so after the two coaches stepped off the ice the players of the atlanta inferno started this new practice routine where everyone would try to stuff as many pucks as they could into their pants without them falling out. the winner of this competition was none other than angus @micool132 mcfife xviii because he likes to wear a size of pants that is one larger than would be properly fitted because he likes the freedom of movement for his groin. the person/duck who could fit the fewest pucks in their pants was none other than puddles of duck @Z-Whiz because of his big duck butt which took up all of the space in his pants!
