Nevada forward Alexi Piastri Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Alexi Piastri faces uncertainty about where he will play in future IIHF tournaments. A SMJHL rookie, Piastri is not likely ready to make the jump to competing internationally for at least another season. Now that the SMJHL regular season has come to it's conclusion, IIHF teams are allowed to contact SMJHL rookies who come from a nation outside of the federations established teams. Playing for the Laurifer Trophy winning Nevada Battleborn, Piastri is coming off of a very solid rookie campaign. Piastri converted to center from the wing and was asked to play key minutes for Nevada. Alexi recorded 23 goals & 33 assists for 56 points in 66 games played. More impressively, all but 4 of his points (all assists) came at even strength. Piastri's 23 ES goals & 52 ES points were both tied for 2nd on the Battleborn. Adapting to center proved to be something that the rookie was capable of. Piastri won 53.5% of his faceoffs and finished with a +37 plus/minus rating. Alexi has made it known that he is willing to listen to any team that is interested in adding him to their roster. It's believed that a couple of teams have already reached out, but Piastri doesn't want to rush to a decision. Alexi has stated that he would be happy to join a team thatvis rebuilding or transitioning to younger players so that he may play a more important role earlier in his career. Let's take a look at teams that people believe to have a good chance to be the potential landing spot for the future SHL draft pick. Austria Austria is a well respected hockey nation that Piastri may fit in very well with. Alexi Piastri, team Austria has a nice ring to it. Austria is pretty much as close as you can get to Australia, at least as far as names go. Piastri is known to be a fan of Theo Kondos, Alexander Wachter, & Esa Parmberg, among others. Czechia Some of my favorite people in the SHL play for team Czechia so this is a natural fit & stands out among other rosters. Some players that Piastri admires include Noel Blanchet, Angus McFife, & Greyson Cooper. Piastri would have a tough time saying no to an opportunity to play with such quality players. Japan Perhaps the best fit, Piastri's mother is of Japanese heritage and met his father in Japan. Japan recently hired a new federation head, could they have interest in bringing in new talent and reshaping the future roster? There's a number of players on Japan's roster that Piastri has looked up to in pursuing his dream of being a hockey player, names include Base Pack, Jack Klompus, Akira Ren, Nike Kickz Jr., Ryuuji Kawashimi, & the Smeb Brothers. There's belief that Japan is the leader in the clubhouse the second they choose to pursue Piastri. Wildcard Latvia Latvia is known to aggressively be pursuing young talent to hopefully play key roles for their team, could that list of players include Piastri? Would Piastri be interested in going somewhere that he could potentially play a staring role for perhaps earlier than on any other team? While these are the favorites, there could definitely be a team that comes out of nowhere to secure Piastri's services. Don't expect an immediate decision from Alexi, but if the right opportunity were to present itself, Piastri may very well jump at the chance to lock in his long-term future for international play. Look for a number of other SMJHL rookies to make similar decisions in the very near future.
