[2X SHL Draft Media] S72 Draft Analysis
#1

Atlanta Inferno Inferno
Pick 15: Dan Johnson - LD – ANC (18 in class TPE)
Pick 55: Lilian Flapberg- LD- CAR (54 in class TPE)
An aging defensive core and no defensive prospects in the pipeline prompted Atlanta to double down on drafting defense here. I like the thought process, but perhaps going both LD was a bit odd to me. Both players will be coming up at the same time, so when peaking one will have to play on their off side if they want to keep them on the same line. Based off TPE both players seem to have been picked around where expected, so no reaches or steals. I think Atlanta should be happy acquiring two defensive players of the future, especially ones that compliment each other well. Johnson is a good defensive player who put their body on the line to block shots and make some hits while also contributing some offense, while Flapberg is more offensively minded, having one of the best shooting percentages in the league. While only playing 14 games, their per game pace would have had them sitting 4th amongst defenseman if they’d played a full season. I think these are some great picks for Atlanta and should help stabilize their defense for years to come. Grade:B

Baltimore Platoon Platoon
Pick 26: Beau Kavanagh- G- GFG (14th in class TPE)
The Platoon elected to use their only on goalie Kavanagh. Kavanagh faced a lot of shots playing for a poor Grizzlies team, so it’s hard to judge their potential. They seem like a promising goaltender who should be making the jump to the SHL at about the time Baltimore goalie Sir Devoir is peaking, allowing for a smooth transition from one to the other. It’s a nice pick to add to Baltimore’s already strong prospect pool. Grade: B

Buffalo Stampede Stampede
Pick 20: Joseph Reed- RW- ANC (28 in class TPE)
Pick 40: Buster Knutt-RD- MET (42 in class TPE)
Pick 57: Zach Cuff Jr. – G- REG (53 in class TPE)
The defending champs add a bit of everything this draft, starting with Joseph Reed. A solid offensive winger with good physical traits, Reed should grow to be a big scoring threat for the Stampede. Knutt missed much of the SMJHL season but was an effective two way player when he did play, and will be a nice asset to have in the pipeline for the future. Finally, they add Zach Cuff Jr., a goalie who split time in Regina and was pretty effective. Cuff Jr. will likely have to split time with the rock solid Casey Fantobens for a while, but if they grow should be a solid pick up. Ultimately this is great draft for a team that’s already on top. Grade: B+

Calgary Dragons Dragons
Pick 10: Arthur Kaliyev – LW – KEL (17 in class TPE)
Pick 12: Jaden Tanner – RD -  VAN (29 in class TPE)
Pick 19: Sven Holmberg – RD – STL (5 in class TPE)
Pick 22: Scott Seitz – C – VAN (26 in class TPE)
Pick 23: Sunrise van der Schubbekutteveen – C – STL (36 in class TPE)
Pick 29: Cheeks Klapanen – LD – ANC (22 in class TPE)
Pick 51: Nelly Celly – G – MET (50 in class TPE)
Pick 52: Daquavioun Davis Jr. – RD – QCC (56 in class TPE)
With 8 picks in this draft, typing out Calgary’s draft analysis has given me carpal tunnel. In all seriousness, this has the potential to be a game changing class for Calgary. This many players all peaking at the same time will be dangerous assuming all of them develop. Kaliyev put up numbers on the 2nd line of a pedesetrian Kelowna team, and should continue to develop into a nice offensive threat for the Dragons. Scott Seitz and Sunrise van der Schubbekutteveen waere equally effective in Vancouver and St. Louis, respectively, and the trio should be able to plug and play nicely in the SHL. Defensively, Holmberg is the standout. A stalward defender who’s strong on the puck, they’ll be an anchor for years to come. Tanner also looks to be another strong defensive presence, while Klapanen brings a bit more offense. Together those three should form a solid defense core to match the offensive core discussed earlier. Late round picks Nelly Celly and Davis Jr. are a bit behind in their development, but if they pan out could be some nice late steals for the Dragons. This is a huge stockpile of young players for a team that’s rebuilding, and could be the start of something big. Grade: A+

Chicago Syndicate syndicate
Pick 14: Alexandros Mograine- RW – CAR (21 in class TPE)
Pick 34: Trey Daniels – LW – KEL (35 in class TPE)
Pick 36: Grell Fortox – RD – VAN (37 in class TPE)
An aging team that’s still competitive, adding three players to the prospect pool is good news for the future. Choosing to focus on the offense,  Chicago started there draft by adding Alexandros Mograine, a two way winger who will need to bulk up to make it in the SHL, but has the tools to be a long term contributor. Joining Mograine in the offensive pipeline is Trey Daniels. A raw winger, Daniels has some speed but will need to improve his puckhandling and defense to make it at the next level. If he does, expect him and Mograine to form a dangerous combo. Lastly, Grell Fortox joins the team in an attempt to shore up the defense. A fairly balanced player, Fortox is good if unspectacular in all factets of their game. They should be a fine addition if they can continue to improve. Solid pickups for Chicago Grade: B

Edmonton Blizzard Blizzard
No picks
The Blizzard are a team on the up and up. They are not desperate for picks, so missing out this draft will ultimately be measured on if they can get the job done with this existing squad. Grade: C

Hamilton Steelhawks Steelhawks
Pick 2: Zedward Zilliams – LD - DET (1 in class TPE)
Pick 8: Trevor Lahey – C – DET (9 in class TPE)
Pick 9: Activity Check – C – KEL
A middling team at the moment, the Steelhawks are relatively young, and also managed to stock upon some good young talent this draft. Zedward Zilliams was one of the top players in the class. A good athelete and strong defender, Zilliams won’t bag too many goals but is a good puck mover for his age and should become an elite defender for the Steelhawks at some point. Lahey is an offensively minded center who is equally adept at moving the puck as they are at scoring. They’ll need to improve defensively but will likely become a strong offensive threat in the SHL. Lahey is a strong two way center that can get it done on both end of the ice, but needs to get better at faceoffs and improve their net-front presence to make it in the bigs. All in all, this is a good haul for Hamilton, and should make them formidable when all these players are peaking. Grade: A

Los Angeles Panthers Panthers
No picks
A middling team that’s starting to show its age, not having picks in this draft hurts the Panthers and their already thin prospect pool. It’s likely going to get worse before it gets better. Grade: D

Manhattan Rage Rage
Pick 1: Jaromir Jagrbomb – RD – QCC (23 in class TPE)
Pick 7: Austin Morley – C – REG (6 in class TPE)
Pick 21: Aksel Vinsen – LW – NBB (33 in class TPE)
Pick 28: I-stir MyPudding – RD – NBB (48 in class TPE)
Pick 33: Maxwell King II – LW – MET (34 in class TPE)
Pick 46: Wayne Holloway – G – DET (10 in class TPE)
Pick 59: Arnošt Hlemýžď  - RD – GFG (32 in class TPE)
The cellar dweller this past season, Manhattan desperately needed a good draft class. They picked up a load of prospect last season, and doubled down this season. On defense, first overall pick Jagrbomb is an all around solid player who should play a key role for Manhattan going forward. MyPudding and Hlemýžď should join nicely with Jagrbomb and create a strong trio of two-way defensemen for the future. Continuing that theme, center Austin Morley is another gigted two-way player, and should be right at home centering Vinsen and/or King II, who both lean slightly more offensive than Morley and could lean on him to shoulder the defensive load while they focus on scoring. Lastly, Holloway looks to be a very solid young goaltender who could lead the Rage in net if given the time to develop. This class and last years class should come together to make the Rage a formidable opponent in a few seasons once all these players start hitting their strides. Grade: A

Minnesota Monarchs Monarchs
Pick 3: Lazer Gato – LD- CAR (3 in class TPE)
Pick 24: Jeff Hunziker – C – QCC (43 in class TPE)
Pick 32: Dee Fence – RD – STL (51 in class TPE)
Pick 43: Cameron Dallas – LW – MET (45 in class TPE)
Pick 44: Jason Bolden – C – CAR (58 in class TPE)
Pick 64: Kellen Watkins – RW – STL (59 in class TPE)
Pick 84: Oskar Samuelsson – LD – GFG (60 in class TPE)
The Monarchs are a team that need to find a spark to find success, and they hope this class will provide it. Lazer Gato was the first of the 7 selected, and should provide some solid defense for the Monarchs going forward. Their offensive game is lacking at the moment, but they have tons of potential. The aptly named Dee Fence and Oskar Samuelsson join Gato on defense. Both players are a bit more balanced than Gato, but aren’t quite as talented. Still, id they develop they will be very solid players. On offence, Jeff Hunziker was the first player selected. An offensive force Hunziker’s defense will need to improve in the SHL. With that said, they look to be the offensive force behind whatever line they’re on. Perhaps they can help unlock the potential of winger Cameron Dallas, who lacks skill but has elite speed. Kellen Watkins and Jason Bolden both lean more offensive than defense like the rest of the forwards drafted, suggesting a push by the Monarchs to a more high octane system. Grade: A-

Montreal Patriotes Patriotes
No picks
One of the top teams in the SHL over the past couple seasons, the Patriotes are starting to age and have no prospects in the pipeline. Not getting anything from this draft is going to be tough. Grade: D

New England Wolfpack Wolfpack
Pick 16: Rocky Orwell – RD – KEL (27 in class TPE)
Pick 37: Colt Fox – C – VAN (11 in class TPE)
As someone with a player on the Wolfpack, I am pleased to add some quotes from none other than our esteemed GM Luke:
Heading into the S72 draft, we were looking at a couple of options. Obviously heading into each draft we are looking to draft the best possible player we can, but we if it came down to it, we would have liked another defenseman with this draft pick.Going into next season with 2 defensemen retired, and a couple are getting even more older, we know that we need to replenish our defense core. We do have some young defensemen, Sean Davies and Pork Tenderloin and ushering in a new era of defenseman for the pack. With Sven Svenson and Borje Samuelsson are both more veterans at this point. We also can’t forget Seamus O'Slapahan that is peaking right now in terms of the height of his defensive powers. He will be a staple for the core for at least the next 7 seasons, so we need to build around that. We don’t know how much time Sven and Borje have left in the tank, so getting more defense has been a priority. Ahead of him too, that’s why we targeted Adelbert Steiner as well in the S71 draft class. Knowing that there isn't a lot of quality defenseman in the draft and in the league as a whole, trading up to acquire Adelbert has been very positive for us so far.
.. heading into this draft we had him ranked 15th on our board, so getting him at 16 was a no brainer for us in terms of fit and the conversations we had with him. We also discussed Trella, Ashes, as well as Dan Craig as well, but Rocky Orwell fit with the vision we had for the New England Wolfpack going into the future. We expect him to be in the SMJHL for the full 4 seasons, being called up in S65 probably to replace Borje or Sven, depending on what hole needs to be filled.
Looking at next season, this draft class is looking really good. We have 2 1st round picks due to trading away crazylemire to calgary, so having 2 1sts in this draft is huge in order to continue the excellence and competitiveness of New England. Early contenders of our picks would be puolivalmiste, Mayuu, Karey, charlieconway, Leppish, Fluw, and AK41 to name a few. We aren’t looking for any specific position again, except we don't really need defenseman with Durden in the rear and Olof continuing his HOF career. The goal is to draft 2 great players that will replace the older players in our roster. While not sacrificing our competitiveness. In terms of other prospects, like we mentioned earlier Adelbert steiner will be getting called up in S64, as well as Scary Jerry in either S63 or S64, depending on when he wants to get called up. As for our other draft pick in Colt Fox, we will see. A late round flier, and if he does hit will help us replacing any forward that we need to.”
So there you have it. This analysis is far longer than any of the others due to my insider intel, but that’s the way it goes. As you can see from Luke’s quote, the plan going into this draft was pretty clear: acquire the best defensemen available to replace aging and retiring defensemen on the team. While other players were being considered, Orwell fell in the right spot so we snatched him. An all-around defenseman, Orwell should be a solid addition. Fox, a late round flyer, has the potential to be a strong offensive forward who can replace an aging forward as long as they up their defense. Grade: A

New Orleans Specters Specters
Pick 11: Bernard Lodge – G – MET (2 in class TPE)
Pick 39: Arturri Lappalainen - RD- STL (40 in class TPE)
Pick 41: Konig Wolf – LW – STL (6 in class TPE)
With two picks in the top 10 for class TPE rank, this looks to be an excellent draft for the Specters despite its small size. Lodge is the best netminder in the class, and I expect they will step into the starting role for the Specters sooner rather than later with both goalies on the Specters roster on the back half of their career. Arturri Lappalainen is a solid defenseman whoase offensive game is a bit lacking, but whose defensive prowess and athleticism will give him a shot at the next level. Konig Wolf is a late round gem and should be a star for the Specters going forward. Wolf can score in bunches and will provide a nice spark for the New Orleans offense. This was a grat draft for the Specters who really maximized their three picks. Grade: A

Philadelphia Forge Forge
No picks
Similar to the Panthers, the Forge are an aging team without a ton of prospects lined up, so not having picks here hurts. Unlike LA, the forge are more competitive. If they can make some magic happen in there rapidly closing window this loss will be worth it, but that’s a big if. Grade: C

San Francisco Pride pride
Pick 38: Rowan O’Beirne – C – REG (15 in class TPE)
The Pride have acquired a fair number of prospects over the last couple seasons, so it’s only fair they cool off a little this season. They used their only pick on center Rowan O’Beirne, who looks to be developing into an offensive juggernaut. While he is limited defensively, O’Beirne has the offensive skills to make things happen out there, and the Pride should be thrilled to have picked them up when they did. Grade: B+

Seattle Argonauts Argonauts
Pick 27: Sith Happens – G – CAR (16 in class TPE)
Pick 35: Ana Parast – LW – REG (39 in class TPE)
Pick 47: Dylan Jacob-Smith – C – NL (44 in class TPE)
Having been one of the best teams in the SHL a few seasons ago, Seattle has fallen apart quickly. An aging core an no real prospects made this a key draft to get right. They started by taking a goalie, Sith Happens at pick 27. I agree that Sith Happens is a great goalie, but given the holes in the Argonauts roster, I would have opted to take a skater instead. With that said, Happens is a promising young goalie and should fill that position for the Argonauts in the long term. LW Ana Parast should help out Seattle’s offense in the future, boasting a solid all around game, although they’ll need to bulk up some if they want to make it. Dylan Jacob-Smith should slot in nicely as well with their equally proficient two way game. The Argonauts likely hope these two can slot nicely on a line together and complete 2/3 of one of their future lines. Grade: B-

Tampa Bay Barracuda Barracuda
Pick 5: The Murray – LW – DET (20 in class TPE)
Pick 17: Dan Craig - RW – NL (13 in class TPE)
Pick 18: RIP THUNDERDOME 2013-2023 – LD – GFG (24 in class TPE)
Pick 25: Chris Robertson – RW – CAR (19 in class TPE)
Pick 45: Wes Thunderbass – LD – NL (38 in class TPE)
Pick 65: Dick Trickle – RD – NL (73 in class TPE)
The Barracuda follow up a large S71 class with a large S72 class that should position them nicely for the future. Murray and Craig are both strong two way players who should pair up nicely as eventual first line players for Miami. Thunderdome is a solid defenseman as well, who leans a bit more offensive, but is proficient on both ends of the ice. They could be paired with the more defensive minded Wes Thunderbass to form a solid defenseive pairing with coverage both offensively and defensively. Chris Robertson is an intriguing offensive prospect whos quickness and agility are very tempting. He could battle with Murray and Craig for minutes in the future. Late round pick Dick Trickle has a funny name and not much else. If they pull it together they could be a solid role player in the future. Grade: A

Texas Renegades Renegades
Pick 48: Leon Rizzton – LD – MET (49 in class TPE)
Pick 50: Sean Bird – RD – NL (30 in class TPE)
Following a draft where the Renegades took two left wingers, they decided to focus on defense and draft a pair of defensemen for the future. A younger team at the moment, the Renegades picks here should be arriving in the SHL around the time the current generation is peaking, making this an ideal landing spot for these two defensemen. Rizzton is the definition of a defensive defenseman, boasting little offensive touch, but an excellent defensive make up. If they improve as a skater and add even a touch of offense to their game they’ll be a good pick. Bird is a bit more well rounded, possessing a touch more offense as well as being a better athlete. Together, the two should provide a solid jolt to the Renegades defense when they come up. Grade: B+

Toronto North Stars  Stars
Pick 4: Westley Kirkpatrick – LD – CAR (12 in class TPE)
Pick 6: Billy Hill – LD – GFG (4 in class TPE)
Pick 13: Remington Richardson III – LD – VAN (8 in class TPE)
Pick 30: Adrians Skalbergs – RW – REG (31 in class TPE)
Pick 42: Kazuchika Okada – RD – ANC (41 in class TPE)
Have yourselves a draft Toronto! After back to back large classes in S70 and S71, Toronto once again makes off with a larger than normal class of five players. Three of those five rank in the top 15 of this classes TPE. Leading of there was LD Westley Kirkpatrick, a balanced two way player who should be a very solid anchor in defense for the North Stars. This was followed by the selection of two more defensemen, Billy Hill and Remington Richardson III. Hill is a great athlete and skater with strong defensive skills who should be a force in the SHL if they continue to grow and polish their game. Richard III is more of a stay-at-home defenseman, boasting almost no puck skills or offensive game, but elite defensive instinct. These three players could become an elite defensive core for Toronto. Rounding out that core is Okada, who is a balance two-way player but lacks some of the taw talent of the aforementioned defensemen. Lastly, RW Adrians Skalbergs is a solid all around player with decent punch on offense and a serviceable defensive game. They could be a solid middle 6 winger for Toronto if they continue to improve. Grade: A+

Winnipeg Aurora   Aurora
Pick 31: Philippe Le Bel – LD – REG (25 in class TPE)
One of the top teams in the SHL at the moment, Winnipeg’s window is now and the draft a bit of an afterthought, but that didn’t stop them from acquiring Philippe Le Be, a defenseman from Regina. Le Bel is a strong two way player, who is effective on both ends of the ice. Winnipeg is a good place to land, and they should help Le Bel reach his potential in the SHL. Grade: B

I know you wrote this article for the money, but I do want to point something out:

On our roster, we have four players total in regression. One is a franchise legend in Jimmy Wagner, one is the Co-GM Yannick Svoboda (who is still quite early in regression), one is the oldest player in the league Slip McScruff (who is a filler for us while prospects develop), and the other is Aleks Blixtstrom, a player likely going into his final season, also biding time for prospects. Every other player we have on the roster are active, non-regressing players. In fact, if you look at our current prospect pool and use those players to fill in the holes of three of these players (Wagner, McScruff, Blixtstrom), we only have one question mark on our roster, and that is the spot of our 6th defenseman. Every other roster spot is taken by active, non-regressing players, and one regressing Co-GM.

Still would have liked to have a pick in this draft, and we don't deserve a good grade for not drafting, but it isn't fair to the team to say we will be getting worse before it gets better.

Good article otherwise <3

The LA one is off, they're definitely a team on the upswing and looking good!
