Robert Phelps
@DrunkenTeddy

One of the best players in the S40’s and S50’s. Robert Phelps is another one of the players who only played for 1 team in their career. Only playing for the Hamilton Steelhawks, Phelps got a late career boost by being on them. But make no doubt, he was one of the best players in the S40’s. One of the most consistent players over that decade. One of the rare people on this list that hasn't won any major awards. Robert Phelps is the exception to the rule of this list. Being one of the most consistent elite players for 1000 games. Drafted 1st OA in S35. Phelps was meant to be a cornerstone of the rebuilding Steelhawks. He proved it time and time again

S37 was his first season in the league. Coming out of the gate Phelps scored 18 goals, 26 assists for 44 points. Tied for 31st in the league in points. Hitting 40+ points as a forward at this time was super impressive, and a benchmark for the many seasons to come as what is an amazing rookie season. I remember in S45 when I got called up to the Pride, Phelps rookie season was the best any rookie had done in over 15 seasons. So for that, Phelps beat Ryan Jesster and got Rookie All Star.

S38 was another great season for Phelps, another 44 point season. Good for 38th in the league.  S39 had Phelps score 18 goals, 27 assists for 45 points(35th). S40 another 43 point season(31st). The level of consistency in the first 4 seasons is impressive. Already in 200 games played, Phelps scored 176 points. For STHS, getting 40+ points puts you in the 20% percentile of points in the league. Making yourself one of the best ~30 players in the league

S41 saw Phelps reach over a PPG for the first time in his career. Also hitting 20+ goals, Phelps scored 22 goals, 36 assists for 58 points. Good for 8th in the league in points for that season. S42 saw him go back down to a 42 point season(33rd). S43 saw him reach 52 points(11th). That season he earned a 2nd All Star Team.

S44, S45, and S46 saw Phelps being a top 15 forward each season. S44 with 46 points(16th), S45 with 48 points(14th), and S46 with 53 points(11th).

S47 & S48 saw the consistency stay there. Getting 44 and 45 points in the respective seasons. But as the league got better, that was only good for 27th and 19th in points for a forward at that time. With Phelps in his 15th season, getting into heavier regression, would this be the start of the end for him?

S49 would be the turn of Phelp’s 2nd wind of his career. After an impressive run in S41-S48 which saw him be almost a top 15 player for each of those seasons except for 3. Phelps got another crack at being a top 10 player in the league again. Scoring 19 goals, 32 assists for 51 points, this is Phelps 4th season being above a PPG. This would land him 9th in the league in points as a forward.

S50 saw him get even higher heights. With 20 goals, 35 assists for 55 points. Phelps would get his 2nd, 2nd All Star Team appearance. 4th in the league in points, this was his best season in terms of leaders in points.

S51 saw Phelps crack 60 points for the first and only time in STHS. Scoring 23 goals, 37 assists for 60 points. With the help of Hamilton’s game breaking strats. Phelps was 5th in points for that season, getting his 3rd 2nd All Star appearance, and winning him his 1st Challenge Cup of his career. S52 would be the last season of STHS, where Pehlps got 49 points for that season.

Entering into the FHM era, Phelps benefited greatly from this. S53 would be Phelps 2nd 60+ point season. Scoring 25 goals, 37 assists for 62 points. He also won his 2nd Challenge Cup with the Hamilton Steelhawks. As for awards, Phelps would get his 4th 2nd All Star Team appearance, and he was also 3rd in points by a forward. The highest point he would ever get in his career.

S54 saw his highest point total ever. Scoring a career high 33 goals, 32 assists for 65 points. That would be good for 8th in points by forwards, earning him a 3rd All Star Team.

Regression comes for everyone though, and Phelps is no different. Entering his 19th season, Phelps only had 43 points. Which is still good, but with scoring getting higher in the FHM era, it was good for 39th in points by a forward. His lowest point of his career. S56 was the only time Phelps never got 40 points. With 14 goals, 25 assists for 39 points. This was the lowest point total Phelps ever had. With that season coming to an end, he retired.

Ending his career with 1000 GP, 391 goals, 597 assists for 988 points, he ended his career being 4th in points of all time. His .98 point per game pace over his career could only be matched by VLAD McZehrl, Tony Pepperoni, Terrance Nova, and Jason Visser by anyone that had over 600 games played at that time. With Visser and Nova being the only ones with 1000+ GP in that span too. In the company of elite players, he just didn't have the breakout seasons that would get him higher in the list

Phelp’s consistency over this time is something that no one else has really achieved in the history of the SHL. From the day he entered the league, he was one of the best players. Up until he retired in S56, he had 18/20 seasons of being in the top 20% in points. 12 of those seasons he was in the top 10% in points. Being a top 10 forward in points for 6 of those seasons. He might have not even gotten a nomination for any of the Major awards. He was one of the best players when he was in the league. And for that he deserves to  be on the list, coming in at #65 of the top 75 SHL players.
