S76 PT #0: For Chirps and Wiggles Due: Sunday, April 7th @ 11:59 PM PST
#91

During the offseason, Billy Herrington's all about finding that sweet spot between chilling out and hitting the gym. He knows being a pro means being in the public eye, so running into fans is just part of the deal. When fans come up to him, Billy's always cool about it. He digs the love and enjoys shooting the breeze with them, maybe even snapping a few selfies. But hey, he's also big on his downtime, so he makes sure to keep it real and set some boundaries. Instead of going all Hollywood with tinted windows and a security detail, Billy keeps it down-to-earth. He'd rather chat with fans in the grocery store aisle or take a quick pic than hide away. For him, these moments are all about connecting with the people who support him and showing some love back. It's just Billy being Billy, spreading good vibes and keeping it real, on and off the ice.

While fan engagements come with the job and Jesus Murphy certainly enjoys interacting with the masses, the offseason also presents an opportunity for a mental reset on top of the training and preparation that goes into being a professional athlete. As such, it is important to strike a balance between being available and communicative with fans but also protecting his peace to some degree. One way to accomplish this is to take training vacations, where he will conduct chunks of his offseason training in various locales around the globe where it is easier to keep some anonymity. Likewise, he has the benefit of being a third-generation SHL draft pick, and his family home is outfitted with an intensive array of training equipment for him to retreat to if he finds he needs some space. Fan encounters still happen, but managing them in this way helps keep them fresh and exciting rather than a constant drain on mental energy.

Prompt 2:

Mac Turner, in Public, in the offseason! Hahahahahahah. No. way. The only "public" Mac sees during the offseason are the local wildlife (mostly just polar bears). This is because mac spends the ENTIRE, whole, offseason in the Artic Tundra. You see its all a part of the mindset. Its not that Mac is anti-social, doesnt like fans or anything like that. Mac loves his fans. Its that mac has a strict routine to get him in shape for the regular season. (This mostly includes Ice Baths and working out and daily hikes up mountains with his Pet Elk Troy, no relation to @Troy_McClure03).
Now  Mac does deal with his fair share of Fans during the regular season. usually its just sign this, take a selfie, and stuff like that, and Mac is happy to do it. But sometimes, when Mac's buying some elk piddle at the local store some fan would be like (Oh My God! Are you Stavros Kondos (A fan favorite) and Mac just says... "Yes. Yes I am."

In the offseason, once all the international stuff is done, Louise St. Martin retreats to her home in Switzerland. It's not an avoidance strategy to get away from rabid fans, far from it; if she runs into any she's very courteous and understanding. But after a full season of high-intensity hockey, plus the World Championship and the absolute pressure cooker that is, she just wants a break. And it's not just the hockey during the season that exhausts her, there's also community work and her side hustles. All of that takes a lot out of you. If someone needs to get like, groceries or something, usually she'll send her wife to go get those, and she only really goes out in public if it's together, or a special occasion, or running her hockey academy in Geneva. Burnout is very, very real. Let's not burn out even further.

Prompt #2 (truly what does #1 even mean????)

Baku welcomes his fans to interact and say hello. While he’s in Baltimore, he will have a few people come and say hello, but rarely does he get overrun by fans (fun fact: it’s Erik Bergmark who gets swarmed by his young, impressionable female fans around Baltimore). That all changes when he goes home to Nigeria. Really, anywhere in the country he is lauded and swarmed like a rock star. Truly, it’s a good thing he deleted his personal social media years ago.

When he was a young hockey fan, he idolized Emeka Valentine-Okoli and Ren-Ekelemchi Shimizu-Okoli as the only representation he had. All respect to EVO and RESO’s careers, but neither reached the heights in the SHL or IIHF that Olubori has. His star is BRIGHT, and it makes it very very hard to get anything done if he goes out in public. Generally, for autographs Olubori has taken the stance of stopping for children, but declining others. Heaven help the middle aged uncle who tries to pull a fast one or argue with Baku. His trash talk isn’t reserved for games (or silly media scrums); he will embarrass a grown man in public if he feels it’s prudent.

Philippe eko eel has an interesting public life that can change very drastically from in-season to off-season. during the season, he's spending most of this time in Atlanta and on the road - overall, a bunch of human contexts. it's pretty difficult to blend into a human context as an eel, so wherever he goes he gets recognized. no amount of blending in will work, unless he physically hides inside of one of his friend's clothing so as not to be seen at all. He likes to crawl up Binko Koivu's sleeve and make binko's arm and leg all slimy but binko is such a good friend and he didn't mind. now binko is gona :( @goldenglutes so Eel will need to find another player who will let him crawl slimily inside their sleeve. if no one consents, he will have to force a rookie to do this, perhaps kristian seppanen @MrPresident or another young player such as sim wen @Jepox or jae-ik barron @charlieconway. In the offseason, however, he can blend in much better - he goes back home to stay with his eel family and exist in a wholly eel context, where he blends in with all the other eels and no one knows that he is famous hockey player philippe eko eel - in this story, pretend that eels can't distinguish between other eels (like how humans wouldn't be able to distinguish between eels cuz we probably don't have the eelular acuity for that) although in reality i would bet that eels can tell each other apart.

McBride is not afraid to meet fans if he runs them in the market square. He lives just like a normal person and goes to places he wants to go. He is a polite player who is fine to take as many selfies as needed and write as many autographs as needed. Why? Because he has learned that habit from a famous Claude Giroux who always has time for the fans. Why? Because in the end, they pay your salary. Without fans there is no professional sports. Without fans there is only amateur sports. So, Mads likes to give his time for the fans if they want to. He enjoys chatting with them and put a smile on their faces. He just doesn't stay at home because he can rest also on the public places. He is a player who has always time for the fans like his agent and mentor has taught him to have.

CERTIFIED THREAD KILLER
MONTREAL IMPACT FOREVER

Nathan doesn't really have an offseason per say he is a player in two sports leagues so his offseason is his season starting in professional baseball. While training for the next season after a bullpen I would run to the rink and rent it out practice my skating my hits my one timers. Run back to the stadium pitch in a game run back to the rink play in a drop in and repeat. In years past this would of been a massive injury risk but because medical technology has advanced so much since 2024. I am still pushing myself to the limit I barley sleeping and I have no time for hobbies. I have friends in both teams keeping it fun but man is it taxing. My first season in the big leagues in pro baseball while preparing for my secondnd, technically third season in the SHL but I manage.

Option 2

Dusty Rhodes needs to take time off and chill in the offseason. So he stays home in New Orleans and does normal blue collar guy stuff. He grills out food and has the neighbors over for burgers and beers. He hangs out at his corner tavern and drinks with the old timers who spend their days in there reminiscing of the older better times. And Dusty loves that, he loves these types of interactions. He's earned enough respect from the locals that they treat him just lime any other guy from the block. He doesn't get hassled for autographs or anything. They just buy him a beer and he buys them back and listens to their stories. It reminds him of who he represents as a Spectre and he plays for those folks. So that's pretty much his off-season at a glance. Just trying to be a normal dude fitting in his neighborhood with everyone else, noonespecial, just Dusty or big feliz as they call him. And that works just fine for Dusty.

Option 2

Crystal isn't exactly a super star in Calgary. Sure, she gets recognized for being a pest, but mostly she can wander around with few issues. But she's always happy to sign something or take a picture, and in fact carries a black sharpie and a silver sharpie in her pocket (she only wears pants with big pockets, obviously) for that very reason.

In Kelowna, however, it is a very different story. There are billboards up still with her endorsements of the city and local businesses around the place. She can still turn on the TV and see a Knights ad featuring her punching a Vancouver player in the face. So, when she gets into the airport, it's already a zoo. People with signs saying "Wlecome Home, Crystal" or more unhinged phrases like "Gooning for a Rennaisance". At least 1 local TV camera. She signed some things, and waved and shook hands, but truthfully she was glad the second she was inside the hired car. She didn't usually like to be driven, as she got carsick quite easily, but when in Kelowna, sometimes she and Jane needed some privacy as Kelowna's famed sporting daughters. Regardless, the pair had had their wedding in Kelowna at Prospera Place and as part of the ceremony, at one point they threw open the doors and looked out over the city, and the people, and soaked in the love they were celebrating.

Option 2:

Brooklyn Physt loves to surf more than almost anything aside from Hockey. Written into her last contract is the fact that the team will not contact her, nor her agent for a month in the offseason so that she can go to Hawaii for surfing, sun, and relaxation.

Every summer she makes the trip either alone or with friends. It is important to relax and kind of turn the brain off from hockey. Now this season was a little bit longer for her both because of going to the 4 Star Cup Finals (Go Dino Gang), Celebrating with Colorado, and then playing in the SMJHL All Star Game in Hamilton just before preseason.

But sandwiched RIGHT in between winning the 4 Star and playing in her only J All Star Game was her trip to Hawaii including a cheeky photo of her on her surfboard at sunset, with the 4 Star Cup. Talk about an amazing way to have your day or so with the cup. Makes this year before going to play in the big leagues up in The 6.
