ST. LOUIS SCARECROWS S42 DRAFT RECAP
Hello fans of the St. Louis Scarecrows! THe most recent draft for the SMJHL was just this past Sunday, and followers of the beloved 'Crows were tuned to their video-streaming devices with eager anticipation. One of the larger draft classes in recent memory, this crop of rookies were giving indications that later picks would be huge, and this was good news for a team only returning a handful of send-downs. St. Louis had only one early-round pick, that being 5th Overall, but then were without any second- or third-round picks. So it would be the multiple picks held in the fourth through sixth rounds that would determine the next few seasons of the organization. Spolier Alert: St. Louis absolutely nailed this draft! Let's have a look at how the Draft unfolded for our beloved 'Crows! First Round - 5th Overall C - Goku Muerto (PLY) - Reykjavik, Iceland 6'1" 198 lbs Strenghts: Passing, Skating, Puck Handling #71 In a draft this deep, with multiple players showing great promise, St. Louis went with the conventional wisdom and selected playmaking Center Goku Muerto. The Muerto brand is a solid commodity in the SHL, and Goku will assuredly consistently improve over the course of the season. Considered the fastes skater of all the rookies with a rating of 77, speed and puck possession are his weapons. Lacks physicality and is not great at faceoffs, but will be expected to contribute offensively. Fourth Round, 25th Overall RW - Lil Manius (TWF) @Bonk - Onchiota, NY, USA 5'6" 182 lbs Strengths: Scoring. Defense, Puck Handling #77 In what was to be the first major heist by the 'Crows, as he stepped to the podium, 'Crows GM @TML99 could barely contain his excitement as he prepared to announce that he was selecting pocket-rocket Lil' Manius. Universal shock rippled throughout the staium as people realized that this pint-sized dynamo had fallen all the way down, overlooked by every other team, despite his relationship to surefire Hall of Famer Big Manius. Yes he is undersized but he plays with a fiery energy and has no glaring weaknesses in his game. Strong in his own end as well, he looks to be relied on more for his defensive awareness and should see time on the PK. Fourth Round, 31st Overall LW - Nicky Pedersen Jr. (TWF) @mstuk41 - Ridgebury, CT, USA 6'4" 230 lbs Scoring, Defense, Skating #9 Like a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde, St. Louis GMs stepped up to the podium 5 picks later, like a couple of crooks returning to the bank they just robbed. This time they shouted out giddily that they selected son of recently retiring, top 10 of all time scoring Nicholas Pedersen. His mini-me is another well-rounded player, equally comfortable scoring or preventing goals. He has all the tools in his kit, and it is a shock that his pedigree did not warrant him a higher look, but, once again, St. Louis fans cheered as they realized they had just committed 2 major heists in the same round! Fifth Round, 37th Overall C - Dale Shootman (SNP) @amdschaefer - Canada 6'2" 215 lbs Scoring, Skating, Puck Handling #67 The Scarecrows made their first foray into the first-gen swamp with this pick, and went for shoot-first centerman Dale Shootman. You might be surprised to hear that his strength is his Shooting. He has a good shot. Time will tell if he has the incentive to grow, but he has appeared in the locker room and may still turn into a steal! Fifth Round, 39th Overall C - Nikolaj Boyle (TWF) @NateAndStuff - Latvia 6'5" 225 lbs Passing, Defense, Faceoffs #88 The Crows looked to fill another Center spot here as it is a prime positional need. Nikolaj Boyle is a great pick here as he has demonstrated already to be active and intent on developing into a bonafide player. His on-ice strengths are his faceoffs and defensive play, so he will be relied on heavily to shoulder the burden of own-zone faceoffs. A big, strong young man, he has the size to intimidate opposing players, and as he improves his Checking he will become even more imposing! Sixth Round, 41st Overall LW - Nicholas Williams (TWF) @Nictox - USA 6'2" 207 lbs Scoring, Defense, Skating #73 The 'Crows continue to fill out their forward roster, and stick with the theme of two-way players, selecting American forward Nicholas Williams, who declared his eligibility just days before the draft. He projects to be yet another steal as he has been active and working hard on his training. Has pro-ready stats in Skating, Scoring, and Defense, so the team is confident he can make good use of his playing time. He will definitely be selected higher in the SHL draft if he continues to build on his impressive start. Sixth Round, 45th Overall D - Kiko Rytmeyr (OFD) @ThatIrishFellow - Ireland 6'1" 210 lbs Scoring, Skating, Puck Handling #44 With this pick, the team recognizes that, while they do have some solid defenders returning to the team, there is still a glaring hole in the roster when it comes to the D-Squad. Waiting until this late to start stocking the cupboards could be a challenge for any other GM duo, But TML99 and @JKortesi81 had done their research, and, like a hobbit in a dragon's lair, they pilfered another gem from the dimishing horde of rookies as they select Irish boy Kiko Rytmeyr. He is an all-out offensive defenseman, with a strong stride and deft hands with the puck. He can grow into a powerplay quarterback with continued effort, but is already showing to be another steal as he is making his presence felt in the locker room, and had a strong showing in Training camp. He is even getting recognition from the press back in his home country of Ireland! Ready to take on the responsibilities of a regular shift in the top 6, he projects to be another riser in the SHL Draft at the end of the season, Sixth Round, 47th Overall RW - Adam Taylor (PLY) @DannyMethane - USA 5'10" 185 lbs Passing, Skating, Puck Handling #13 You'd think at this point the 'Crows might start having a conscience for all the daylight robberies they've been committing, but here they come again as they call out Adam Taylor's name. Here is a player who knows the league and how to succeed, and once again the 'Crows are there to snag him up. A playmaker with great conditioning, he is well-rounded player with a focus on puck possession, so should fit in very nicely with the team's plans. Already over 200 TPE, he is poised to have a big role. Seventh Round, 55th Overall D - Milo Momoka (OFD) @milomomaka - Thunder Bay, ON, Canada 6'1" 190 lbs Scoring, Puck Handling, Skating #9 Now deep into the 7th round, and St Louis still not done with their pillaging, this time they snag up another defenseman, one Milo Momaka. Alongside having the coolest name of anyone in the draft, he also arrived at Training camp raring to go, and has been active around the locker room. He has strong offensive instincts, but has not neglected his defensive training. Showing great early potential, chalk up another steal for our beloved Crows! Eleventh Round - 87th Overall G - Aliester Cain (HYB) @SlashACM - USA 5'9" 160 lbs Reaction Time, Hand Speed, Agility #28 When you talk about steals, you can't ignore Mr. Irrelevant, the last man picked in the Draft. Yet once again St. Louis pulls one last rabbit out of the hat, selecting goaltender Aleister Cain, who has shocked and surprised everyone with his activity and presence. Despite half the teams already gone home and the janitors starting to sweep up the vacated seats, St. Louis was still working it and made one final caper, getting a player they hope can step into a backup role as early as this season. --------------------- So, all in all, if you see posters in the Post Office with TML and JK's pictures on them, chances are they are wanted for Grand Larceny, as they absolutely pulled off a level 10 PayDay mission, and walked away with gold standard picks at almost every selection! We now look forward to the season to begin and get our hockey addiction filled! Go Crows! S76 SMJHL DRAFT 3RD OVERALL PICK IIHF TEAM NORWAY
