S43 PT #1 - New Season, New Reasons

Following a surprise visit to the playoffs in S42, the Detroit Falcons look poised for a deep playoff run in S43. Here are SSPN's "IT FACTORS" for the S43 Falcons:

1. Veterans in Key Positions

Returning players are a big part of Detroit's projected success. With captaincies held by defenseman Tig Murphy, forward Hippo Passamus, and goaltender Cedric Robinson, and locker room presences from players like David Fantobens, Tobias Viklund, and Dank Boija, Detroit has a strong returning core to shore up top minutes.

2. Strong Drafting in S43

An aggressive S43 draft saw the Falcons ranked top overall by pundits across the SHL. Detroit acquired organizational needs (Chuck Crutchfield), best available players (Poopity Scoop), late round gems (Franz Cooper) and abject steals (Ola Wagstrom) that will all make an immediate impact on the ice.

3. New but Experienced Management

Although the team is still reeling from a change in management as Wozy left the team, prior co-gm Waters and coach JSS immediately step in as experienced management. A combination of new outlooks and old faces make the pair among the most effective new managers in the league.

Three strengths of the Toronto North Stars. Well obviously it's got to be the excellent GMs, best in the league.
Okay maybe slightly biased there.. In all seriousness one of the main strengths of the team right now would be the development of the younger players, the team has a solid core of young 39 and younger players that have developed very nicely.
A second strength would have to be the one and only Chris York, how is he so good, nobody knows. But with him leading the teams offensive efforts the team that's barely missed out on a playoff position for the past two seasons are in for a real good shot of making it this season.
The third strength for the North Stars would have to be it's center depth. With York playing center along with Manning, Clijsters, Cristiansen, and PKR this opens up a lot of options for the Stars going into S43.

The Anchorage Armada have quite a few strengths going into the new season. The first is their starting goaltender, Benjamin Bleu. Bleu is coming off a rough season, with a record of 18-17-5. He also had a save percentage of .884 and a GAA of 3.26. The year before, Bleu won the goalie of the year award, so the Armada are hoping he can steal a few games for them.

Another strength is the returning captain, Muhammad McLovin. McLovin doesn't typically jump off the stats sheet as a game changer, but it's his demeanor in the locker room that sets him apart. Hoping to bring home a championship, McLovin can work his magic on a squad that will be rostering at least 6 or 7 rookies to start the year.

The last advantage is the defensive corps, headed by Jordan von Matt and Rex Kirkby. Karl von Wittelsbach is a consistent producer as well, and has been a mainstay with the Armada for the past few seasons.

The Raptors were a bit of a question mark heading into the last offseason. After being bumped from the playoffs early by the Montreal Militia, they were without team management due to resignations and appointments in SHL. Enter the new management team of Carbine and jcfbey01. Two established GMs with a track record of winning teams and bumping locker rooms, the team seems to be in capable hands for the moment. Another big strength will be the additions of Michael O'Dowd and former Raptor Kevin Maddox from the Kelowna Knights. The team was in need of a passing center and another big defenseman and addressed it in the same trade. Speaking of needs, they were minimal this season due to most of their capped players surviving call-ups and remaining with the Raptors for one more season. Troy McClure III was the only call-up this season, which means the Raptors will continue to have one of the most potent lineups in the league. Goaltender Scottey Crawfling remaining with the team is likely the most important keep this offseason with the lack of goalie prospects in the Raptors system. There is a very good chance the team looks very different this time next season, but for now, the Raptors have one of the best chances to win the Four Star this season.

raiders

After a deeply disappointing end to the Raiders Season, Halifax is looking to bounce back. A 7 game losing streak to close out the season all but sealed the team's fate last season. A decent first half of the season saw the Raiders in the top half of the standings but once the new year came. The other teams who struggled out of the gates quickly picked up. It was clear Halifax was fighting against time and they could not keep the wins coming to half their free fall. However, this year looks different and while the J looks like it may have one of its most competitive seasons. The Raiders have 3 key strengths we are going to be looking at.

1.  Active Players:

Halifax has the luxury of active players this year. It is not often a team can boast so many active players on one roster. Almost impossible in the SHL this year the Raiders have 11 active forwards, 5 active defenders and 2 active goalies. Some may say it’s hard to please such a full roster with ice time but, any naysayers are quickly shut down. An active team like this builds closeness, relationships and bonds. Having such an active Locker room really changes the energy of a team, coming on at any time of the 1.     Active Players:

2.  Budding Stars:

3 of Halifax’s current top 6 boasts 5 of the top 15 picks from the most recent SHL draft. Most notably Leshaun King and Oliver Kovacs the respective 1st and 2nd overall picks from the draft. PLD at 12th and Max Egger taken at 13th. Of course the second half of the Kovacs duo in Kristof as he was snatched 15th overall. These 5 players all look to be budding young stars destined for greatness at the SHL level. Adding in several other notable roster players and drafting recent notable legends like Eggy will definitely mean Halifax is overflowing with future SHL stars for seasons to come.

3.  Championship Caliber Goaltending:

Not much needs to be said here. After the Raiders lost their star goalie Geezus Krysst, Manager TDZ wasted no time in replacing their starter. With Kelowna coming off of their three peat performance at the Four Star Cup the team needed to head for a rebuild with the cupboards left bare. TDZ came in and was able to acquire the 3 time Four Star Cup winning goaltender Kata Vilde from Kelowna. Surely a 3 time champion and veteran, Vilde will look to be an unstoppable force in net for Halifax. day to see different members of the team talking really helps keep the team engaged and helps push each other.

In 150 words or more, outline at least three strengths of your SHL/SMJHL team heading into the S43 season. Strengths could include anything from veteran personnel, coaches, player additions (or subtractions) or any other important aspects the will create success on the ice for your team.

Not wanting to brag to much but the addition of Bobby Watson to the Minnesota Chiefs seems to have pushed the team to a greater standing this pre-season, can’t wait to see what will happens during regular season. But, a player cannot send a team into playoff alone. The second strength of the team are their talented offensive player and their complementarity. Four of their players are in the ranking board for the most goals and you can find other players of Minnesota in the best centre/right/left wingmen ranking of pre-season. The team rooster is really balanced with strong scorers with awesome playmakers working together to succeed. Last strength I could think of would be their awesome defense and goaler. As of now, almost all players have a +/- score rating positive during preseason. Those factors combined make a fine team that should get their chances this season to win the cup. The best is yet to come.

Alrighty, so the Seattle Riot. We haven't made the playoffs for the last several seasons and we are definitely looking to make it in this go around. I would say that our first strength would be the addition of Eduard Selich. Even though he is only going to be here for this season, it will be nice to have another veteran presence on the team. The second strength that the Riot have is the coaching of Dangles. Yes, Samee and Static work very diligently to get the team ready for the season, but Dangles goes above and beyond in making sure that our lines are set up optimally, so a lot of credit has to go his way. The third strength that the Seattle Riot possess is a strong as hell top defensive pair in Clint Eastwood and Liam O'Callaghan. We are giving them a ton of minutes and it's going to be up to them to make sure things go well in the defensive zone. All-in-all, there is still a lot of work to do with the Seattle Riot, but we do have some strengths that are absolutely worth mentioning.

The Halifax Raiders have everything they could ever wish for this season and are on their way to what might be one of the best seasons in history.

-Their offensive line-up is straight up incredible. With LeShaun King and Oliver Kovacs being respectively the first and third picks of the last SMJHL draft leading a deep group of forwards, they are going to be piling up goals this year.

-Their defensive is solid. With Egger, PLD and Finley, along with the young Bork who already looks like he could step in a big role for his first season, it'll be really hard to put any pucks on the Raiders net.

-They have a new SMJHL elite goalie. Kata Vilde is now part of this team, and any shot that will get to him will have a very low chance of getting any further.

-They have the greatest locker-room attitude of all, and all there is in Halifax right now is hope and love.

There is a lot of good talent on the Chiefs roster going into S43, with the forward core doing really well for this season and the next. If anything, there is almost too much talent when it comes to wingers, as there are multiple 1000+ TPE members who are likely going to be making a big splash. The next strength for the Chiefs for S43 is Garbanzo looks poised to make a big bounce-back after the first time in almost 20 seasons he was unable to register at least 30 points on the year. With him training during the offseason it looks like he may be able to have a season that will shock people around the world. Unlikely it is a Stevens-worthy season, but still one that will help vault the Chiefs back into the playoffs. The third strength of the Chiefs is the coaching. There has been a lot of talk regarding the coaching staff not utilizing their players properly in S42, and that has been addressed in the preseason, meaning the Chiefs look like they could be a contender going forward with the right attitude.

Alonzo Garbanzo Final Tallies (Among Defensemen):
2nd in Goals (208), All-Time Assists Leader (765)*, All-Time Points Leader (973), 3rd in Hits (2587), All-Time Blocked Shots Leader (1882)*
*All-Time Leader Among All Skaters

1. Leadership: Shmurph has done a great job of taking over a lot of the burden managing the team, and a GM with fresh, new energy investing time into a team can bring a huge amount of change to the ice. On the flip side, Sarmo's coaching skills bring one of the most knowledgeable veteran minds to the ice for the team. It feels like there's a lot of focus being put on improving this season, with the energy and knowledge to back up the enthusiasm.

2. Starpower: Terrence Nova is one of the very top players in the league at the moment. Noro Wozy and Bobby Watson are both huge additions in trades over the offseason. Isak Odegard is finally reaching peak playing prowess. On the back end, goalie Sebastian Primeau is finally looking like he's ready to have a breakout season. While some players are slowing down and approaching retirement, the team core feels stronger than it has in seasons.

3. Preseason Stats: Preseason may not mean anything in the long run, but in its first showing on the ice, the team is looking far better than last season. Tied for first in the league in goals for and fourth in goals against, the Chiefs are second only to the Blizzard in goal differentials coming out of pre-season, and our powerplay is looking much improved as well.
