Without a doubt in my mind my biggest miss in the draft has to be in S46 I was still in Montreal at the time I’m guessing in an advisory role or something of the sorts so I was really familiar with the players activity levels in the locker room, we had picks 50 and 54 in the draft and as we got to pick 50 I had two players without a doubt that I wanted on the team and they were both from Montreal, but @TommySalami had recently joined the management team in Edmonton and we had started grooming him for the eventual GM position and he felt really strongly about a different player. I decided to allow him to choose his guy at 50 and I’d pick one of my guys at 54. Both players I wanted have turned out to be great players in the league, and sadly Tommy boy’s pick ended up refusing to sign with us because we were the Blue Toy Dog’s or BTD’s for short. In retrospect it’s easy to say “Yeah I shouldn’t have let Tommy make the pick and I would have gotten my guy” but who knows how the whole scenario pans out if I select the initial player at 50, maybe we wouldn’t have gotten one of my favourite players in the league in @“James Truong” at 54. If everything else plays out the same and we still would have gotten James at 54, I’d call not drafting my initial target at 50 is my biggest regret as a manager so far, but life has no guarantees and ultimately I can still say I’m happy with how that draft turned out overall. What do you think about players who want to test free agency and maybe even end up leaving for free? It is honestly one of the only things players have control over is who they play for, and often times it is avoidable if you can provide whatever it is the player seems to be looking for in free agency. With that being said I wouldn’t ever compromise my teams success to please the wants of one individual, Hockey is a team game and I’ll always value team success over individual. Sure, it blows losing an important piece, especially for free but it’s the nature of the business and my players don’t owe me anything, they would still have a team without me, I wouldn’t have a team without them. 09-14-2020, 07:56 AMjRuutu Wrote: 2. Ensio Kalju was great his time with the Blizzard, I have no issues with anything that happened while a member of the Blizzard, he ended up traded and we netted an incredible piece with the returns in Finn Rhys. I’d say Independent, Gritty, Hard-Nosed, and Team Player as my five words. Had no idea what the plan was there.
