Each topic is worth 1 TPE. Each answer must be 50+ words. a. An LAP team that was disappointed in a S63 finals loss is back again to face a TBB team that has been hungry for their chance in the entire FHM era. Who are you taking as a winner and why? - I'll have to pick the Los Angeles Panthers, why? Even though this might sound biased, because I am on said team, but I gotta say I believe in everyone on said team. We got a good group of guys and gals on here, everyone contributes and let me tell you, that Fuzz fellow.. Smartest GM out there, but don't quote me on that. (63 wc) b. Tampa Bay’s top forwards have been absolute power houses on this run, totalling 102 points across their top 6. If you’re LA, how do you line-match against two lines that are on an absolute tear? - We'll have to put them in a bodybag or maybe throw a couple of WWE moves at them? Tombstone a mhfker and throw pocket sand at them, that's the only reasonable solution that I can think of, that's exactly why I've got a few small cloth bags full of sand inside my goalie equiptment. Can't let those bastards be scoring just like that, who do they think they are? Our opponents? (71 wc) c. L.A.’s D pair of Kierkegaard and Kahnwald are maintaining a shocking 2 more GF/60 than GA/60, despite playing more than 21 minutes a game including PK time. If you’re Tampa Bay how do you get around these two? Hope to outlast them in endurance, or look to more depth scoring? - How do you get past two guys that are playing out of their minds and very fast paced hockey? Hack em. Hack their feet. Hack their arms. You can't just go out there and score on the opponent like that. You have to have integrity and grace towards your opponent. If you score too many times then we'll have to get physical, that's just how it goes. (67 wc) d. TBB’s roster has racked up many more shot blocks (294) than LAP has (188). Do you see this as a good thing? Is this an iron willed team that’s willing to lay down their bodies to get the job done, or do you think it paints a picture of a team that can’t maintain possession and has to find another way to keep the puck out. Maybe a bit of both? - I don't think it really tells too much. You know they might end up on the penalty kill more often or they've got guys that are more willing to put their body on the line to keep their team in the game. And you know some coaches will push you more towards that kinda thing and then you might have a goalie that wants you to get out of the way rather than block the shot, so they get a better look, who knows? (84 wc) 4. Written, 3 TPE, Do You Touch It? (150 words min.) In the NHL there’s a well known superstition that any team that touches their conference championship trophy won’t win the Stanley Cup. Are there any superstitions like that in the SHL playoffs? If so, what are they? Where do they come from? Does your team or your player believe in them? Why or why not? - You don't touch another mans yoghurt. That's chiseled in stone and you just don't do it. First of all, okey, are you following with me? First of all, you're disrespecting the man(the yoghurt man(your teammate)) if you touch their snack just like that and second of all you don't know what's in that yoghurt anyway, why the hell are you touching that yoghurt it might be laced with COCAINE!? Now, like, come on now. I know you're hungry, but you don't know what the yoghurt man has gone through during their day, maybe they're dead tired? You ever think of that? But the reason you don't touch the snacky snack is because it creates bad chemistry and you don't need that in the playoffs and that's a fact, you all gotta be on the same level and the gears gotta be turning to the same harmony. The last thing is, why are you even eating yoghurt, do you not know how sugary some of those damn things are? We can't have you having a sugar crash during the playoffs. (179 wc) 16. Written, 2 TPE, Just Like Back Home (100 words min.) Choose a dish from your IIHF federation and tell me about it! Does your player make it? A member of their family? What’s special about it to you? - Well my player is on the German team and I don't know a lick of thing about German food, so I'll tell you about finnish food. There's this food called rössypottu that has potatoes, fat, pork/ham and baked blood in it and it's actually pretty good. They used to serve it once every month at my old school and I'm pretty sure everyone ate it. I have no idea if they try to serve it to kids these days, cause I feel like most kids are very picky now with what they eat. Another speacilty over where I live at is mayo on pizza and let me tell you, that's really good with some salami and jalapeno's, trust me bro. (120 wc) 13. Graphic, 1 TPE, DALL-E? More like WINN-ING! I write this without knowing much of anything about the Tampa Bay Barracudas or how they’re run. That said, having been around Fuzz and sve7en in Carolina, I know they have the chops to get it done and think that they’re going to pull it off this season. They’ve certainly built a solid team capable of doing so. [58 words] b. I can’t recall anything about the tactics in FHM since it’s been quite a while since I’ve played it. I think the best way to neutralize an offensive minded line is to focus on puck possession. Keep the puck off their sticks by playing slow and methodical. Crank up the physicality when they do have the puck. [57 words] c. When a team has a really good scoring defenseman, there aren’t a lot of things you can do to effectively neutralize them without leaving a hole elsewhere. Factor in two good scoring defenseman and you can only hope that they get a little less lucky. The key will be clearing the area in front of the net so the goalie has a line of sight to the shooter. [68 words] d. I think this is absolutely a good thing. A willingness to sacrifice your body to block a shot is what can be the difference between winning and losing. Obviously, it would be better if the team could just win with puck possession, but when that’s not an option, having iron willed players certainly helps (especially when injuries are turned off). They were the best team in the league this season, winning 50 games and amassing 102 points. Their leading point scorer Long John Donair was a monster this year with 70 points and with eight players with 90 or more hits, they absolutely punish opposing teams. b. Similar to what I said in my previous answer, I think the Panthers will have to do what they did all season: punish teams for extended puck possession. Make sure Sean Gatez and Jonas Kahnwald pair with the TBB top line and put Aleks Blixtstrom and Elias Kierkegaard on their 2nd line. Make sure that if TBB wants their skill players to possess the puck, they're going to feel it. c. This was my biggest take away from looking at the matchups in this series. Tampa Bay is going to need depth scoring. Guys like James Ronlain and Ambacas Cuddles will be key to this series if Tampa wants to win this series. They're going to need defenseman Colin Lambert to chip in for some offense as well, something he did great this season. d. I think it shows a level of awareness for Tampa Bay to have so many guys willing to lay down and help out their goaltender and I think it will present an issue for Los Angeles in this series. However, the 2nd part is true as well. Tampa is a team that struggles to control the puck and they have to block shots in order to win. Against a good puck possession team, this could set them up to be beaten and battered by series end. Code: 6. Written, 3 TPE, New Stat (150 words min.) I think the attribute that FHM is obviously missing is hockey IQ. There are some guys in real life hockey that, thought they don't have the best physical skills, just seem to be in the right place at the right time. some might say that it is a skill that is not taught but is instead innate. But I would like to see it included as an attribute for the player. In the sim, it would make switching lines or strategies easier on the player. Kind of like a "coachability" thing. Players with high hockey IQ could also recover well from cold streaks and be more likely to go on hot streaks. The mechanic would be similar to a player spending a bunch of time watching tape to figure out what he's doing right or wrong and making the adjustments on the ice. Players with high hockey IQ might also play differently against different archetype players. Code: 7. Milestones, up to 3 TPE +3 TPE milestones RE: S65 Championship Week - AW13 - 06-23-2022 Code: 1. Each answer must be 50+ words. a) The team I am picking to win the Challenge Cup is none other than the Los Angeles Panthers! The answer and reason may be a huge surprise and shock but the reason I am selecting the Panthers is because they already won! Yes, I am from the future and can already know that they won. Really though I would have chosen LAP to win it all regardless due to the fact they were number one points getters in the league as a whole. You can see TBB had a higher goal differential but there was still a 13 point difference from 6 extra wins! Los Angeles knew how to win and would go on to show it in the end. b) Tampa Bay certainly had a lot going for them especially from their top lines of forwards and I thought it was very interesting looking into it to see how LAP could counter it and maybe even take advantage. What stuck out to me is looking at the game rating stat and specifically the differences between offensive and defensive game ratings with Tampa Bay's forwards in comparison with Los Angeles' forwards. While I did not do the exact math, on first glance, it seems like there is a huge difference and Tampa Bay's forwards are full octane offense but not doing great on defense. Los Angeles, while still higher (they're forwards, they should), have a closer and higher defensive game rating from their front men. I think if Los Angeles just attacks, they can take advantage of some defensive weakness of the Barracuda forwards and I assume they did. c) Again, while it does not tell the whole story I have to look at the game rating stat which is more of an FHM stat than a pure hockey stat to my knowledge and it is likely highly variable but over a certain amount of time, it should at least indicate a couple things right. I think Kierkegaard may be benefitting a ton from playing alongside Kahnwald or with other solid players in regard to his high GF/60 and low GA/60 because his game rating is pretty low in comparison to his linemates. On defense, he has just a 55 Defensive game rating while Kahnwald leads the team with 74. So in general, what I think Tampa should or should have done is find ways to attack Kierkegaard and make him have to step up to win it for LAP. d) So excuse me if I sound relatively raw and/or dumb in this but I am new to the advanced stats side of hockey and have been doing some short research on the Corsi statistic. I have found that it is not an end-all-be-all stat and to take caution against viewing it as one but it has been decent in order to see or predict a level of a team's puck possession in the offensive zone. With that being said, when looking at the stat, in general it says that a number of 55% or higher is considered elite for the Corsi For Percentage and in general, players want to have a positive Corsi For Relative Percentage. Now, the reason I bring it up is because it includes shots blocked unlike Fenwick and from looking at the Corsi numbers, it does seem like Tampa is not great in terms of their allowance of puck possession in their own offensive zone. So, they are blocking a lot of shots but they are allowing a lot of possession which leads to a high amount of shot numbers. If you look at individual numbers, Tampa's top 3 shot blockers Kozlov, Blouin, and Jericson all have negative CF Relative % with -2.7, -1.4, and -3.9 respectively. I think they just have a shot of shots peppered at them and props to them, they know how to block them at least! Code: 6. Written, 3 TPE, New Stat (150 words min.) So, i was not sure exactly what to put here but I know what I wanted to consider so I did some research. Now, I am a big baseball fan myself and one of the big baseball, all encompassing stats out there that you see is the WAR statistic which stands for Wins Above Replacement. It pretty much takes your contributions on offense and defense as relative to other league factors and puts it all into one stat which shows what that player means over a replacement level player in general. My goal was to see what stats like that were out there for hockey and look at that, there is technically a WAR stat for hockey and there are articles out there on it as well. There is also a GAR or Goals Above Replacement stat as well that can be split into a ton of different categories such as Offensive, Defensive, Even Strength, and some others from what I was reading. From what I have seen, there has been a lot of resistance in the hockey world to using a stat like this and yes, it is hard especially when you try to have one stat try and catch the overall level of a player and their contributions to the game. Baseball WAR is not perfect and some players get huge boosts in some areas and look like a much better player than they probably are. I want to include an article that I thought was really interesting if someone on the grading team or just in general stumbles upon this and hasn't seen it before! This is a really fun matchup, with two teams outside of the usual powerhouses in the SHL. It’s fitting that we get the best team from each conference in this season’s final, but I have to give the edge to LAP this series. The Western conference is quite simply better than the East right now, and LAP has overcome a juggernaut in CHI in the semifinal, and swept their first two opponents, including an SFP team that outperformed TBB during the regular season. I think TBB gives them a challenge, but the series ends in a win for LA in 6 games. B. TBB has some great forwards, but LAP’s strength comes from its depth. If I’m the Panthers GM right now, I simply roll the lines and force the Barracuda to adjust to me. If the top lines come out even, LAP runs away with this series, and I don’t think there’s enough depth on the other side to match them. C. Kierkegaard and Kahnwald have been outstanding, and there’s a reason LAP gives them the minutes they have, but just like the inflated GF/GA numbers from dominant teams in the J (NL, NL and NL, for example), this is simply a byproduct of an overall team effort that dominates puck possession. When your opponent doesn’t have the puck, they can’t score, and when you run up the score the way LAP can, the best +/- and GF/GA numbers will always be found at the top D pair. D. Shot blocks are a funny thing, and you’ll get as many opinions about this as you will users writing about it. Individually, blocking a shot is a great thing, and provides an important role to a team, but just like GF/GA, blocks as a whole are an indicator of which side of the ice you’re playing on most of the time. A shot blocking discrepancy this high indicates to me that TBB is spending more time out of possession than LAP, which bodes poorly for their chances at a cup. 4. Written, 3 TPE, Do You Touch It? The “curse” of touching the conference championship trophy has been disproven time and again, with plenty of recent champions touching the trophy after winning a semifinal series. That doesn’t mean that there’s nothing to it, though. Curses, good luck charms, pre-game routines and other superstitions all come from a very human desire to bend fate to our liking and ward off that which we cannot control. Hockey, more than many sports, is a mental game. If you worry too much or lack confidence, you don’t play well, and that’s been proven plenty of times in sports. I think this one comes down to the individuals and the team, and what helps them build up excitement and focus for the championship run to come. If you believe in a curse, then don’t touch the thing. If you love to challenge fate, then grab it and lift it up for the world to see. Most of all, take the opportunity to celebrate a huge win with your teammates, and build your narrative together in a way that drives you forward for the bigger games to come. 6. Player personalities are a huge part of real hockey, and while I certainly don’t want to force users to spend TPE on sportsmanship to make their player not a total asshole, I’d love it if there was a set amount of points users had to allocate to some of the hidden attributes in the game. Want to build a player who’s wildly inconsistent but thrives in the spotlight? Choose the “wildcard” preset and drop your consistency to 5 but send your “big games” attribute to the moon! Give players the opportunity to dedicate themselves to the sniper/playmaker role by choosing their pass/shot tendency level, letting them play to their strengths without bringing individual sliders back into the game at the GM level. I have no experience testing these attributes (and I won’t do it, please don’t ban me), but I think there could really be potential here. 16. The US is a country built on its diversity, and the stories of every American family are as unique as the people who made them. Our size and population alone mean that there’s a little bit of everything to be found here, and you can spend a lifetime meeting different people and only scratch the surface. Immigrants from all over the world brought with them their food, their music, and their culture, and generation by generation those cultures merged and took on a life of their own, and the best part of America is getting the chance to see them, learn from them, and challenge our preconceptions of what people are like. 22. Written, 3 TPE, Gone Viral After a disappointing finish to the S64 season, Justin Time and QCC teammate Rylie Versi (@The Roope Hintz Effect) decided to spend the offseason touring North America on a month-long road trip, starting and ending in Quebec. They met up with several teammates along the way, but one moment stood out in particular on the first leg of their journey, on the road to Manhattan to drop off their departing captain, Aksel Fiske (@mer) . At some point just south of the US-Canada border, at three in the morning, Versi’s playlist brought up Love Story by Taylor Swift for the fourth time in an hour. Whether out of genuine love for the song or pure exhaustion, the trio sang along at the top of their lungs, with Fiske secretly filming from the back of the van. The video went viral within the SHL community almost immediately, and while neither Time nor Versi will be up for any awards for their vocal performance, there were many attempts in the QCC locker room to one-up their video during the following season. 16 TPE total RE: S65 Championship Week - Pythonic - 06-23-2022 gm pass RE: S65 Championship Week - grok - 06-23-2022 Pt pass RE: S65 Championship Week - FuzzSHL - 06-24-2022 GM Pass |
