The Merica Show Returns - Merica - 03-25-2021

It’s been a long time since the Merica name has plagued the SHL, over 30 seasons to be semi-precise, much to the league’s happiness, but that’s about to change. Most people, at this point, probably do not remember Daniel Merica, the cocky American who took the league by storm and made a name for himself both on and off the ice as he found success and turmoil wherever he went, culminating with an enshrinement into the Hall of Fame and two Challenge Cups. The original “Cursekiller”, Merica broke two Challenge Cup curses, bringing home championships for the Seattle Riot and Manhattan Rage.

Now it’s son’s turn to party his way to the top and irritate the masses. Enter Daniel Merica Jr. Much like his father when he entered the league, DMJR is all offense. With a muscular 6-1, 190 lb frame he’s a dynamo offensively, blending devastating speed with the footwork of a ballerina and a shot repertoire that will put goalies into a blender.

Coming out of Boston University, DMJR isn’t expecting to be very high on anyone’s list. ”It’s been a long time since anyone associated with the Merica name, whether by blood or endorsement, has seen success in the SHL, so I’m well aware I have a lot to prove before anyone will think I’m serious about being here, but I will say that whoever does take that risk… they’ll reap the benefits in the long run.”

He isn’t wrong, the list of players who came after Daniel Merica that earned his endorsement were all utter failures and faded away almost as quickly as they came, but who better to reinvigorate the Merica brand than his own son? One thing that’s for certain is that it will be entertaining, no matter which direction his career goes. The other thing standing in his way could be the plethora of changes that have come about in the league over the past 30+ seasons- it's hardly recognizable. "It's an entirely different league than when my Dad played, which isn't necessarily a bad thing."

Let the party begin.
