Any particular bench marks people consider in regards to HOF players?

There a certain number of goals/points/awards players need to hit?

In all seriousness, though, one of the things I remember hearing once is:

Were they, at some point in their career, the best player in that position/of that type?

I don't know that there are any specific cutoffs for HoF/not HoF, but it should be a significant thing. It shouldn't be handed out to every player that has one or two good seasons.
