- fgh - 03-31-2017 So instead of most overpaid player, as seen in other articles of the past, why not focus on those that are producing the most points? Which stars are the best value in a moneyball system? My original list was literally just the value of every point from the top producer of every team, not that great an article piece. So why not do the whole league and see where the anomalies are? I give you my cost-benefit analysis of the SHL. These use S33 contract numbers, so I know, they're not the same as the re-signings and whatnot right now. You'll be ok. Link to the sheet CBA probably isn't the right term for this, because I'm just showing what each team values, or thinks they value. For instance, Portland paid twice as much per game for Reed Laing's 29 points compared to Chernika Banananov's 59 points, while Eduard Selich's 46 points were a little less than 50% as valued as Milekis Grudmanis's 11 points. Meanwhile, Hamilton paid the most per point and New England the least per point. There's a ton of information here, and a few outliers, so, to start, here are the team rankings in terms of who spends their money best per point: 1. ![]() 2. ![]() 3. ![]() 4. ![]() 5. ![]() 6. ![]() 7. ![]() 8. ![]() 9. ![]() 10. ![]() 11. ![]() 12. ![]() 13. :admirals: Portland Admirals - $268,240.95 per point 14. ![]() This kind of makes sense, with the reigning champions in New England playing the best managerial role. Spending less per point means that the Wolfpack have been allocating their money to get either high point producers or secure great goaltending, and either would be fine. On the other end, the Admirals and Steelhawks missed the playoffs, and part of it might be spending insane money on some people. Ieuan Llewellyn actually fits in the explanation: a $3M player that produced a grand total 1 point. That's a $3M point. Unless it's to win the CUp in Game 7, I'm not paying $3M. I get that a lot of salary arbitration also involves LR compatibility and inactive/semi-active stuff, but there was a group of folks that are too highly paid as semi/inactives. Some of those include the 6 players being paid $1M+ per point produced. 2 of those are on Calgary, which places them at the bottom of the team list. It makes sense that, amongst the wide range of contracts to play in the SHL, there are some that are bad. I decided to exclude players that had less than 100 minutes played during the season to keep the outliers to a minimum, so know there are more folks out there that got paid to score zero points or really just benchwarm. Now, the title says Most Overpaid Superstars. This means we have to define a few things. What would qualify as overpaying for someone? My definition is the player that scored the farthest away from the mean $/point value ($167,883.05 per point removing some outliers) that played over 1000 minutes in a season and scored within the top 60 in the league in points. So, keeping those definitions in mind, here are the 6 most overpaid superstars in the SHL (the 6 only players to meet this description): 6. ![]() Kristoffer Ruud is a better option per minute if you want to look at the Renegades defensive core. Vader has a solid production rate and is a good defensive player, but Ruud is being paid 1/6th the rate per game to hit only 1/3rd the points. That's a solid deal, and maybe means they need to restructure or something. 5. ![]() This is an odd one. Usually the second scorer in the entire SHL isn't overvalued, but let's take a look at his teammate Theo Kane, the top scorer in the league. For 1/5th the price, Kane scores 3 more points. Ivan Koroviev is a way better option money-wise if you want high-end production from a forward, and Edmonton, thank god, doesn't have to deal with this contract anymore. 4. ![]() For a team that manages their money so well, Bure is an anomaly. The forward is a solid offensive presence, but even in Boston, you have forwards of a better value like Dieter Dominique and Mainio Makinen that are scoring more points for far less per point or per game. New England seems to be overpaying to add the 43 points to their roster, but if they moved Bure's contract, that $10M could buy a grouping of players that, together, would hold more value than the one outstanding Bure does currently. 3. ![]() The Stampede are a relatively young team that needs an anchor on the front lines, and Wachter fits that build. However, with nice contracts like Eduard Selich's about to expire sometime soon, Max's $10M contract could be allocated more usefully. Taking on someone like a Taro Eichelele and someone older like a Schnitinfritz Jagr would produce more points for around half the value, and allow that cap to be used for extensions and players exiting their ELCs. 2. :admirals: Jonathan Lundberg - $250,000.00 per point, 44 points Journeymen like Lundberg are most suspect to taking huge deals wherever they can, and this is no different. Even though it's trades that usually moved Lundberg from WIN to NEW and other places, the Admirals signing Lundberg to at least keep the young team competitive might have been too risky. Combined with another ugly contract from non-superstar Reed Laing, Portland has put themselves in a hole. With Laing being bought out, however, maybe the Admirals GMs are rethinking the buy your way to the top philosophy. Part of that could start with restructuring or removing this $11M deal from the budget. 1. ![]() You know it's a bad deal when, on the list of most overpaid superstars, you find someone that could have been a better free agency acquisition than the Big Z. Tying Laing and Sarantez for biggest contract in S33, Szlerchek did not produce like Sarantez, but had more minutes than Laing. That's not pretty for a team that has a few solid pieces, but young goaltending and is a bubble team recently. Rage management could have done more with this money, like pay for a placeholder to let Jason Aittokallio develop more as a goalie. Speaking of goaltenders, here's a quick look at the 3 most overpaid starting goaltenders: 3. ![]() This section is a bit harder to define as who is truly overpaid, but Berger fits in the mold as overpaid thanks to his below-average save percentage. Goalies, apparently, can only be truly judged on their own save percentages, and so, with that, Berger's being low and having a decent contract is not fair to the Jets, who need consistency in net. If the $4M was spent on a pair like Erik Lundquist and Colin Schmidt to hold the gap until a new goalie could be shepherded and brought in at a decent salary, that would be a better use of money. 2. ![]() Bjornsson is the one on this list that could be easily dropped tomorrow for several on-ice reasons. His $7M contract means he should be performing exceptionally compared to his peers, but he is not. At just 0.1% above the average, Chris is average, and with young Georgette Pel able to take the reins, Bjornsson could find a team in need of a goalie for a smaller contract, until he got back to whatever play warranted such a heavy contract number. 1. ![]() This one is hard to justify, but I'll try. There's an argument to be made that the best goaltender in the game should be paid the highest, and in that regard, Andersson fits the bill. Best save % = $9M contract, though, seems a bit far to lock up an elite goalie. For a third of the cost, the Chiefs could have Matt Lewis-Flood at 91.5 SV% and $6M in cap space to finally add depth to team consistently criticized for overplaying stars in the past. The rookie flow is good, but $6M could bring in a free agent like Robb Wind and still have $3M for the rookies once they exit their ELCs.
