- Jenny - 09-08-2017 We all know that player - that one you find when you're looking through stats pages and think to yourself why don't they get the credit they deserve? Or maybe they don't even put up incredible numbers, but their presence on the ice and in the locker room is invaluable, no matter how underrated they are. Your Task Written option: Write 200 words about an SMJHL player you consider to be the hidden gem of the S36 regular season. You can back it up with whatever evidence you want. Graphic option: Create a graphic depicting an SMJHL player you consider to be the hidden gem of the S36 regular season. Must include: a render, team logo, & some indication of why you chose that player. You will only get TPE for doing the written OR the graphics option, not both. Pick one or the other. Your Reward 4 TPE for doing the thing Only S36 SMJHL Rookies are eligible for this PT. Deadline Sept 14th, 11:59 PM EST - Keygan - 09-08-2017 My choice for the most underrated player this season would without a bit of doubt have to be Dionýz Vyskoč. There's absolutely no reason why Dionýz Vyskoč should be underrated apart from the fact that he plays on the same team as Dani Forsberg, who seems to hog all the lime light in Prince George, but Dionýz Vyskoč has been an incredibly good player for Prince George all season. Not only has he been an incredible talented scorer (51 points, only 6 behind Dani), but he's also been one of the most disciplined players in the entire league amassing a total of only 15 penalty minutes thus far this season. Without Dionýz Vyskoč who knows if Dani Forsberg would even been as great of a scorer, so while many look at the Prince George Firebirds as a one player team, Dionýz Vyskoč says to think again. I can only hope that Dionýz Vyskoč continues his reign of scoring dominance into the playoffs as if he and Dani Forsberg both catch fire, the Prince George Firebirds are a nearly unstoppable team. You keep doing you Dionýz Vyskoč, I hope one day you can shine brighter than any other players on your team and that you can be recognised as the talented player you are. artermis - ErM - 09-08-2017 My hidden gem of the SMJHL S36 regular season would have to be Connor Tanner. I will be honest saying until a few days ago I knew nothing about Connor Tanner, but people are really hyping him up as a draftee on the internet so he must be a solid player here as well. Connor Tanner is doing very well with his TPE gain thus far and is sitting very comfortably over 200 TPE with 226, showing that this guy is willing to put in work. I guess it also helps when you are the Co general manager of a team, but I did not realize that until I had already planned to write this piece! It’s hard for a rookie to lead in any category, even in the SMJHL but Connor Tanner is among the top rookies this season at number six in rookie points with a line of 7 goals, 14 assists, for a total of 21 points on the season. To make Connor Tanner’s performance more impressive is that he’s playing on arguably the worst team in the SMJHL, the Montreal Militia he posted a poor 18 wins in season 36. Connor is sitting in third place on the Militia roster in points, despite being quite low compared to some of his other players on the experience front. It is clear that with his general manager pedigree and impressive rookie performance Connor Tanner is a player on the rise, even on the lowly Militia. - .bojo - 09-08-2017 ![]() - artermis - 09-08-2017 Quote:Originally posted by ConnorTanner@Sep 8 2017, 04:47 AMu r now my favorite tanner sorry Tanner - IAmAGoatAMA - 09-09-2017 Code: 226 words - dino_2000_22 - 09-09-2017 Has anyone other then Hoid Wit actually heard of someone named Hoid Wit? Exactly guys, he is the furthest thing from a household name to make it even worse when we polled 100 people in the Vancouver area 82 of them said Hoid who? My point precisely not even his own fans know his name. I have yet to ever see a Vancouver Whalers Hoid Wit jersey myself? My nominee for most underrated player in the SMHJL would be Mr. Hoid Wit! Lets break a few things down Shot Blocks: 60 (9th in SMJHL) Pts: 25 but not his forte Pim: 12 Average TOI: 22:45 (13th in SMJHL) To say he is a "stud" obviously would be quite the stretch. He is always in the right position and uses his stick very well. If they kept track of takeaways I can almost guarantee you he would be in the top 10 of that category as well. Going against other teams top lines, having only 20 hits and 12 pims in just unheard of on the defensive side of the puck, Those numbers are getting close to Lidstrom numbers which no one can deny! Other names on this list I know that the general public know of, but Hoid Wit nope! - Loganjj21 - 09-10-2017 [208 Words] I think that by far the most underrated SMJHL player would have to be the St. Louis rookie Johnny Yuma because without Yuma stepping up and taking over the goaltender spot I don't believe the team would've worked as well together. Early on in the season the team was struggling to find wins until Yuma stepped up and started making incredible saves to keep his team in the game, the teams first twenty games went bad winning seven games and losing thirteen. but the team started winning following behind they're young rookie goaltender finishing in third place. Yuma won twenty one games and only lost fourteen also losing in overtime five times. He finished with a 0.883 save percentage and playing 2435 minutes and only getting two minutes in penalties. I believe that our early struggles were caused because of the rookie aspect just getting used to playing at the professional level, once all the rookies got settled in epically Yuma the team started winning games and the atmosphere in the club house became a much more positive place for all players. And because of Yuma's play and the team working great together they have made a playoff spot and behind Yuma the club knows they can win. - Leafs4ever - 09-11-2017 One of the Halifax Raiders most important player this season, or hidden gem if you will, has been defenceman Cloud McCarthy. His play this season has helped Halifax claim 2nd seed in the standings and a first round bye in the SMJHL playoffs. One reason I chose to highlight McCarthy is because with two big names on our blue line, Lukas Müller and Chippy Chiclets, I don't think it's known just how much he solidifies the back end. Cloud put up a very strong regular season campaign this season. He potted 7 goals and added 27 assists for 34 points, while being a plus 17. His pairing with Ted Glass was a defensive force for the Raiders, shutting down their opponents and creating plays from breakouts. To go along with his strong offence, McCarthy was third on Halifax with 74 hits and fourth in shot blocks with 41. He possesses a strong two way game that not many players have. It was comforting to know that when Müller and Chiclets weren't on the ice, there would be no drop off of talent when McCarthy took it. He made life easier for Halifax's goalies with his shutdown play in the defensive zone and also easier for the forwards because he was so able to make that crucial first pass and start a fast break. Cloud McCarthy has been a huge piece for the Raiders this season and he will continue to be an important player for them when the playoffs start. (250 words) - Beaver - 09-14-2017 In a draft that yielded quite a few strong rookie contributors in the late rounds, one such hidden gem deserves to be singled out: Aline Marqueles. She was drafted in the third round, 21st overall, by the Montreal Militia and stayed competitive in the rookie scoring race for most of the season despite playing on the worst team in the league. Her 20 points put her 4th on the Militia, just behind fellow rookies Jack and Connor Tanner, and 7th league-wide among rookies. When one considers that she had bad luck with a 7% shooting percentage and her team as a whole only scored 110 goals in their 50 games her production becomes even more impressive. Another of Marqueles' strengths was her knack for staying out of the penalty box, only taking 26 penalty minutes in 877 minutes played. Staying out of the penalty box isn't as glamorous of a skill as racking up points - you'll never see a highlight of a player not hooking an opponent or refraining from boarding - but it is arguably even more important considering half of the league converts on over 20% of their power plays. It's very fitting that the hidden gem of the S37 draft excels in subtle skills - racking up assists instead of goals and staying out of the box instead of delivering bone crunching hits - but if she can keep up this level of success going forward she certainly won't be overlooked for long. Edit: 240ish words - PeanutButter - 09-14-2017 The player who is currently the most underrated in the SMJHL is Johnny Yuma, St. Louis rookie and goaltender who has had to take over for a team that has had some issues as of late. If he hadn't been able to do what he did, the team may not be nearly where they are right now, and with his growth the team is going to have some good years ahead of them. Just go back to the beginning of the season. The team was in a tailspin, couldn't get a win to save their lives. Then comes in Johnny Yuma, making key plays behind his teammates and stepping up in big ways to help the team get some wins, even if it may have been too late to make a real mark on the league. Eventually, he had a winning record, something the Scarecrows were not expecting, with a 21-14-5 record. Not too bad for his first go around. Though his save percentage wasn't terribly good at the end of the season (finishing with a .883), he was disciplined and only went to the box once, and had a role in the team's leadership meaning he may be selected as the team captain going into next season. Of course, the current season isn't over, and with the Crows making it into the playoffs Yuma may still show some signs of improvement and even get them into the next round. That would be something to see, eh? - Bzerkap - 09-14-2017 I don't know shit about hockey and I don't know shit about this league. What I do know, is how to fluff an article up right, and I plan on doing that right here. My underrated player is someone that I have no idea if they are talked about at all. Are they underrated, overrated, just right? I surely can't answer that, but he's on my team and I saw his stats and they weren't the top but weren't at the bottom. I guess that must be pretty good. Congratulations, Cam Oullette!! (@ I don't know who this is) You were hella efficient! You didn't lead the team in goals or assists, tied for 2nd, and 8th respectively, but boy did you make use of your time on the ice! 0.73 P/20, I'm assuming this means points per twenty minutes of ice time. That was third on the team! Great efficiency! Also, you were third in points while on the ice with 37! Since that is the sum of your goals and assists, you clearly were a huge contributor to that line! Look at that +/-, wow! 8! Tied for second best on the team! So clearly you gave up some points while out there but you probably scored a lot more, second on the team has to be good! So hats off to you potentially underrated superstar! Who is your user?? Found ya! It's Camo!! - Jaymay - 09-14-2017 ![]() |
