This is my first article in this league, please use x2 media grading on it.
Now that we are in the middle of the SMJHL playoffs, I want to take a look back at the regular season we finished about a week ago. It was my first year in the league, and it was a fun and interesting experience in this simulated hockey league.
In this article I want to take a look at some base statistics and rankings, and dive deeper into some stuff I find interesting and want to share. To start off, I will just rank the top performing players of the year in various different categories. I have only included defenders and forwards in this article and rankings, so if you are looking for a goalie, you can stop reading the article already.
Ranked by: TPE
First off, let‘s start with the TPE leaders in our league. Of course, we have a cap and only a part of this TPE can be applied, but it‘s still interesting to see who the highest TPE players are.
890 TPE, Steve Harrington, LW, S53, Newfoundland Berserkers
825 TPE, William Hartmann, LW, S53, Vancouver Whalers
823 TPE, Edward Williams, C, S53, Detroit Falcons
This are the top 10 players in SMJHL by TPE. I would be surprised if any of them still plays down here next season, but we‘ll see. Steve Harrington and Ryuuji Minamino are two big parts of the Berserkers offense, the best team in the regular season. In fact, the first 7 players are all from top 4 teams in the regular season. The only team missing here is Anchorage Armada, who don‘t have one of the top S53 players. It is no wonder that this list only contains S53 players, as those are the ones who had the longest time to earn so far. Although there are still some S52 players in the league, but it seems all – or at least most of them – are inactive.
Let‘s take a look at the other classes and rank them by TPE. There are 9 S52 players still in the league.
362 TPE, Ryan Cvitkovich, RW, S52, Anchorage Armada
357 TPE, Cyril Vyskoc, C, S52, Anchorage Armada
353 TPE, Theo Golury, LW, S52, Kelowna Knights
353 TPE, Trey Nets, C, S52, St. Louis Scarecrows
247 TPE, Grant Thurber, C, S52, Anaheim Outlaws
This will be the last season for this guys to be around in the league. As we can see, only two players made it to the final cap of 450 TPE. All but Grant Thurber were at the first cap of 325 TPE. In this list, we have some valid pieces, but no pillars of a team. I think those players will be easily replacable by their teams, moreover when looking at their impact on the team. One standout player here is Cyril Vyskoc for the Armada, who scored 49 points this season.
S54
682 TPE, Dwight Knight, LW, S54, Carolina Kraken
676 TPE, Ryosuke Sato, RD, S54, Vancouver Whalers
669 TPE, Daniel Laforest, C, S54, Kelowna Knights
664 TPE, Mikkel Asmus Sondergard, LD, S54, Maine Timber
652 TPE, Jack Klompus, LD, S54, Newfoundland Berserkers
652 TPE, Aumy Jr., LD, S54, Colorado Raptors
648 TPE, Bork Lazer, RD, S54, Anchorage Armada
647 TPE, Emilia Bergman, RD, S54, Anaheim Outlaws
644 TPE, Matthew Sawful, RD, S54, Anchorage Armada
632 TPE, Rotticus Scott, RW, S54, Kelowna Knights
The S54 class is lead by Dwight Knight from the Carolina Kraken with 682 TPE. Unlike the S53 still down, the S54 class is dominated by Defenders in the top 10. Other than #1 Knight, #3 Laforest and #10 Scott, all players here are Defenders. As I am new to the league this might be the case that defenders maybe get called up earlier than forwards, and in S53 those defenders where already called up. But maybe this class is just super loaded on defense.
477 TPE, Alexander Oscarsson, RW, S55, Maine Timber
The top 10 TPE players of S55 are lead by Liam Slate of the Newfoundland Berserkers. The LW is the clear leader in his class with 9 points when looking at how close the next places are together. Between #2 Lambert and Bjerg and #8Flitterwind is also only a difference of 9 points. All of the top S55 players reached the 425 cap already. In fact, 24 players in that class did so at the time of this writing. The top 10 players are quite balanced between defense and offense, which is at 4 D-men and 6 offense players.
S56
301 TPE, Alexander Kozlov, C, S56, Carolina Kraken
298 TPE, Rock Strongo, LW, S56, Colorado Raptors
298 TPE, Slava Petrov, LW, S56, Anchorage Armada
298 TPE, Jonas Kahnwald, RD, S56, Newfoundland Berserkers
298 TPE, Teylora Petrov, LD, S56, Quebec City Citadelles
297 TPE, Vladmir Petrov, C, S56, Anchorage Armada
295 TPE, Sachimo Zoidberg III, LD, S56, Nevada Battleborn
290 TPE, Sarah Burke, RD, S56, Vancouver Whalers
288 TPE, KnockedOut byOvechkin, RW, S56, Vancouver Whalers
284 TPE, Michael Withecheck, RD, S56, Anchorage Armada
The S56 class is lead by Alexander Kozlov, drafted by the Carolina Kraken. He is only 3 TPE before a four way tie of Rock Strongo, Jonas Kahnwald and two Petrov‘s, namely Slava and Teylora. Only one point behind the next Petrov in Vladmir. Of course this class is still a bit closer together than S55, as they only have played almost one season so far. At the moment, there are 22 S56 players with over 270 TPE.
One interesting observation when looking at TPE leader is, that in all classes (except S56, not counting S52) a LW leads the class.
21 goals, Grapefruit Lizard, C, S54, St. Louis Scarecrows
What a season for Mats Marner and the Newfoundland Berserkers. Marner scored 32 goals in 50 games, what puts him at clear #1 in that ranking. The second best goalgetter in the league is Sven Svenson with 27 goals. Quite a bit behind Marner, but still comfortable lead over the rest of the pack. The next players scored 23 goals, Zoltan Zopalo and Chris de Siren share the third place. The 5th place is a four-way-tie by Jaska Seppala, Ethan Price, Kwame Dakari and Linus Grimstad. Only one goal before another tie by Cyril Vyskoc, Ryuuji Minamino and Grapefruit Lizard. It‘s no surprise that the only teams with several players in the top 10 are the top 3 of the season, with Newfoundland, Colorado and Anchorage.
27 assists, Thorbjorn Gunnarson, LW, S54, Anchorage Armada
27 assists, Daniel Laforest, C, S54, Kelowna Knights
The top 10 list ranked by assists only consists of 9 players, as there are 5 players who scored 26 assists, and I didn‘t want to list them all. The leader in assists again is a player from the Berserkers, this time it is Ryuuji Minamino with 35. He is followed by the Armada forward Chris de Siren with 33. The third in the list completes the top 3 teams, as it is Carolina Kraken Center Linus Grimstad with 32. The next two players again are Berserkers, top goalgetter Marner and his teammate Steve Harrington with 30 and 29. The Armada oldie Vyskoc makes the top 10 with 28 assists, as much as Raptors forward Kristjannson racked up. Another Anchorage player in Gunnarson made the 8th place, tied with the first Knights player Daniel Laforest. Assists only happen if goals a scored, that‘s why only players from the top 5 teams made it on this list. The Berserkers dominate this list with 3 players in the top 5. The only other team that has 3 players in the top 8 is Anchorage Armada.
The top scorers are not really a surprise when you already looked at the goal and assists rankings. The #1 in points this year is – by a margin of 6 points – Mats Marner of the Newfoundland Berserkers. Following in 2nd place we have a two-way-tie between Chris de Siren and Ryuuji Minamino with both 56 points. Linus Grimstad of the Carolina Kraken is the one player left, who managed to score over 1 point per game besides the top 3 with 54 points. Cyril Vyskoc of the Anchorage Armada was close to hit this mark, but fell short of 1 point. Ethan Price is the only player in the top 10 not playing for a top 5 team this season. The Anaheim Outlaws forward recorded 48 points. Sven Svenson of the Colorado Raptors made 47 points. The third Anchorage player in the list is Thorbjorn Gunnarson with 46 points. He is followed by two Carolina Kraken players, namely Jimmy Wagner and Vitek Vitecek with 43 and 42 points. Asclepius Perseus Flitterwind from the Colorado Raptors rounds out the top 10, as he‘s tied with Vitecek at 42.
The only two teams who have three players in the top 10 are Anchorage Armada and the Carolina Kraken. A bit surprising is, that the Kelowna Knights fall short of the top 10 with their best player being at #11 in Daniel Laforest.
Ranked by: +/-
+39, Pojo Biscuit, LD, S54, Anchorage Armada

The top 10 in the +/- list sorted by negative value are dominated by expansion teams. This was expected, but the list is not just made of expansion players. The worst value out of all players has Sachimo Zoidberg III, a rookie defender for the Battleborn. He has the same value as the #1 in this category, but just as negated. Second is also a Battleborn player, Balzams, tied with rookie defenders Jasper Maximov and Max Goodman from the Quebec City Citadelles. They have a value of -30. With Vili Alfalva, another rookie defender makes the list. The first offensive players are Kev Kevens and Stan Q. Next of the Citadelles, followed by Alexis Vermette from the Battleborn again. In 9th place we have a four-way-tie at -24. James Kimanje and Julian Cunningham are two more players from expansion teams. The only two players not from expansion teams on the list are from the Detroit Falcons. Kolja Kekkonen and Zakkira Diporow made the list.

The best scorer for Anchorage were all already to be seen in the general rankings. Chris de Siren scored most goals, assists and points of all of the Armada players. In Carolina, Linus Grimstad is the unanimous leader and top scorer. He scores the most goals, but is tied here with Kwame Dakari. Grimstad leads in assists too, and therefore leads in points. Jimmy Wagner comes in 2nd close before Vitek Vitecek with 43 and 42 points. The gap to the next ones isn‘t really big, as Dakari made 40 points and another two players follow with 37 and 36 points.
The Colorado Raptors have various different players in the top scoring categories. The top scorer Sven Svenson leads the team in goals, but isn‘t even in top 3 in terms of assists. The second best scorer of the team, Flitterwind, ranks 3rd in goals and assists. And the third best scorer is Lord Raiden, who ranks second in assists. He‘s behind Kristjansson, whor recorded 28 assists, but only was able to score 7 goals.

Topalo is the leader in goals – and that by far – with 23 scored goals. The next best goalgetter is Williams with only 14 scored goals, followed by Taisto Jutila with 13. 19 goals, 18 assists, 37 points, James Hagan
Kelowna was a top 4 team in the regular season. But they lack in term of fire power, as their top scorer only made 41 points. With that, he didn‘t even make the top 10 in scoring players in the league, which you would expect a top 4 team to have. Laforest made a lot of assists, but lacks in goals. He only ranks third there for his team with 14, tied with Keahi. The top goalgetter for the Knights is Seppala with 22, followed by James Hagan with 19 in second. Those two players are also the ones who come closest to Laforest in total points. The #2 in assists are Rocco Berni and Simon Takshak, tied with 21 assists each.

13 goals, 25 assists, 38 points, Victor Ball
18 goals, 20 assists, 38 points, Lucas Hellquist
Maine Timber has some good scorers. They all are also really close together. What they are missing on top, they try to compensate with balancing out over the team. Their 5 best scorers are all within 5 points, but none of them made the top 10 league wide. The top scorer is Kyle Sutton. He scored the most goals on the Timber with 20. He lacks a bit in assists though, to be counted to the top scorers of the league. The second best scorer is Victor Ball, who is second in assists, but lacks in goals. The top 3 in assists are really close together in Maine, with Shepherd, Ball and Stromberg all being within 1 score. Hellquist is the third player in terms of total scoring. He recorded the second most goals of all Maine players, 1 ahead of Oscarsson. This is a really young set of players, better watch out what is in store for Maine in the future.

Nevada Battleborn had a tough inaugural season. They had hard times get scoring going, which can be seen in their top scorers. Gavin Wallace and Zelma Zuntnere scored a total of 25 points, a value that is close to the top score in assists for most other teams. The top goalgetter was Zuntnere with 18 goals. The only other two players to record at least 10 goals are Helminen with 13 and Wallace with 10 goals. The leader in assists is Gavin Wallace with 15, followed by Alexis Vermette and rookie defender Sachimo Zoidberg III.

The #1 team this regular season has the top scorer with Mats Marner. In fact, they also have the #2 in Minamino, although he tied with Armada player de Siren. The third best scorer is Harrington, who made most of his points with assists, recording not less than 29. This is only the third best value on his team, but league wide he ranks 5th for it. The #2 on the team is Sven Gunnar, who scored 13 goals and 14 assists. Rookie Zdenko Beranek rounds out the top 3 with 15 assists, but only 6 goals.
The Scarecrows also had some struggles get scoring going this season. Their top scorer is Grapefruit Lizard, who made a strong 21 goals and managed to get 37 points. But when looking at the goals scored for the rest of the team, it‘s a bit lackluster. #2 on the team is Kriss Darzins with 14 goals. These are the only players to score at least 10 goals. The third best goalgetter on the team is Pavel Kharlamov with only 9 goals scored. The most assists on the team has Colin Lambert with 19, closely followed by Darzins and Young Logo with 18 and 17.

7 goals, 23 assists, 30 points, Bryce McMahon
The Vancouver Whalers top scorers this season were William Hartmann and Daniil Nikiforov. They both are only separated by 2 points, at a total of 41 and 39. They are both in the top 3 categories of goals and assists. After this two players, the scoring falls off a bit, but McMahon manages with the most assists on the team to crach the 30 mark. There is no player on the team besides of the top 3, who has scored more than 8 goals. Luckily for the Whalers, the two top scorers on the team rack up that many points.
Team statistics
Now let‘s look at some team statistics. I calculated the averages of all statistics of a team to see how they rank against each other in the common categories. Let‘s first take a look at the number of players a team has on it‘s roster. Almost all teams have between 18-20 players they are using, except Anaheim with only 16 players.
20 players: Anchorage Armada, Detroit Falcons
19 players: Carolina Kraken, Kelowna Knights, Maine Timber, Nevada Battleborn, Quebec City Citadelles
18 players: Colorado Raptors, Newfoundland Berserkers, St. Louis Scarecrows, Vancouver Whalers
16 players: Anaheim Outlaws
TPE
Let‘s take a look at how the teams rank in order of average TPE their players have applied. This is maybe not 100% accurate, as I only looked at the 425 TPE cap. This means a team might be shown slightly higher at it currently is, as the cap is always set at 425 TPE. It also takes into account the players that were on the roster and recorded stats by the time I took the data.
Newfoundland Berserkers, 406 TPE
Colorado Raptors, 379 TPE
Carolina Kraken, 376 TPE
Maine Timber, 375 TPE
Kelowna Knights, 362 TPE
Anchorage Armada, 348 TPE
Vancouver Whalers, 347 TPE
Detroit Falcons, 329 TPE
St. Louis Scarecrows, 317 TPE
Anaheim Outlaws, 316 TPE
Nevada Battleborn, 266 TPE
Quebec City Citadelles, 264 TPE
This list shows. That the Berserkers have a big advantage in TPE over the rest of the league. They are 27 TPE in average ahead of the #2, the Colorado Raptors. Them, the Carolina Kraken and Maine Timber are really close together, all within 4 TPE. The teams following are Kelowna Knights at 362 TPE. Anchorage Armada has only 348 TPE on average, which is only 1 point ahead of the Vancouver Whalers. The Detroit Falcons have 329 average TPE, which sets them a bit ahead of the St. Louis Scarecrows and Anaheim Outlaws which are at 317 and 316 TPE respectively. The bottom of the pile form the expansion teams, as it could have been expected. With only 266 TPE and 264 TPE they rank bottom last of all teams.
Goals
Newfoundland Berserkers, 10.3 goals
Carolina Kraken, 9.9 goals
Anchorage Armada, 8.8 goals
Maine Timber, 8.8 goals

The next few teams are really close together, with Anchorage, Maine, Kelowna, Colorado and Anaheim having between 8.8 and 8.4 goals per player. After a gap of 2 goals per player, the next bunch of teams follows within 6.4 and 6.1 goals with Vancouver, St. Louis, Quebec City and Detroit. The last team in this list is Nevada, with only 5 goals per player.

St. Louis Scarecrows, 10.8 assists
Quebec City Citadelles, 10.6 assists
Detroit Falcons, 10.5 assists
Nevada Battleborn, 8.2 assists
The list ranked by average assists per player is almost the same as for goals, with the only difference being Maine leap-jumping Anchorage to being #3. This two teams switch positions. The Berserkers record almost 18 assists per player, whereas Nevada is stuck at only 8.2 assists.
Points
Newfoundland Berserkers, 28.2 points

Vancouver Whalers, 17.6 points
St. Louis Scarecrows, 17.1 points
Quebec City Citadelles, 16.9 points
Detroit Falcons, 16.6 points
Nevada Battleborn, 13.2 points
The list of average points per player is nothing surprising after looking at goals and assists. The list stays the same as for assists, which means the Berserkers are leading with 0.6 points on the Kraken. Third, with already a gap of about 3 points are Maine Timber, who are close together with Anchorage Armada, Kelowna Knights and the Colorado Raptors. Anaheim Outlaws also manage to have over 20 points per player. In the close to bottom tier we have the Vancouver Whalers, St. Louis Scarecrows, Quebec City Citadelles and Detroit Falcons within 1 point from 17.6 to 16.6. Dead last again is Nevada Battleborn with only 13.2 points per player in average.
Plus-Minus
Carolina Kraken +17.9
Newfoundland Berserkers +15.3
Anchorage Armada +13.3
Kelowna Knights +8.0
Colorado Raptors +6.3
Maine Timber +0.3
Vancouver Whalers -0.4
Anaheim Outlaws -2.1
St. Louis Scarecrows -11.1
Detroit Falcons -11.9
Quebec City Citadelles -17.5
Nevada Battleborn -19.5
In the +/- category, the Carolina Kraken are leading with an impressing +17.9 value. A bit surprising here is the fact, that not Anchorage comes in second, as they dominated this category in the top 10 with the Kraken. Second here are the Newfoundland Berserkers at +15.3, and in third place comes Anchorage Armada at +13.3. Those three teams set apart from the rest of the field, as the fourth placed Kelowna Knights follow with a deficit of over 5 points. Colorado is also close to the Knights with #6.3. The last team with a positive value is Maine Timber with only +0.4. The first team with a negative value are the Vancouver Whalers at -0.4 and Anaheim Outlaws at -2.1. The other teams are already at a +/- of under -10. St. Louis and Detroit at -11.1 and -11.9, and the expansion teams with only -17.5 for the Citadelles and devastating -19.5 for Nevada.
Penalties in minutes
Maine Timber, 24.9
Vancouver Whalers, 24.6
Kelowna Knights, 24.4
Colorado Raptors, 23.9
Quebec City Citadelles, 21.8
Anaheim Outlaws, 21.4
St. Louis Scarecrows, 20.8
Carolina Kraken, 20.6
Detroit Falcons, 19.6
Newfoundland Berserkers, 19.0
Nevada Battleborn, 17.1
Anchorage Armada, 9.0
Taking a look at the average penalties in minutes, we see the league is pretty close together. The first 4 teams leave a small gap to the following teams. Maine Timber leads the league in penalty minutes, followed by Vancouver, Kelowna and Colorado all within 1 minute. The leader of the next tier is Quebec City with 21.8. Anaheim, St. Louis, Carolina, Detroit and Newfoundland all follow pretty close after them. Nevada succeeds almost best in avoiding penalties in the whole league, if it wasn’t for one team. The Anchorage Armada are – by far – the team with the least penalty minutes per player in the whole league. They only averaged 9 penalty minutes per player over the whole season. This is a remarkably low value.
S56 rookie class
At last, I want to take a look at the S56 rookie class I am in myself. Let’s take a look at the topscorers in the class first.
Rock Strongo, LW, COL, 14 goals, 18 assists, 32 points
The best scorer in this rookie class in their primary season was Rock Strongo. He leads this class by a wide margin with 8 points ahead of #2 “Long” John Donair. Strongo scored the most goals, he scored the most assists and therefore has this comfortable lead. In second comes “Long” John Donair from the Anaheim Outlaws, scoring 11 goals and 13 assists. The two forwards are followed by a three-way-tie. The first of this package is defender Michael Withecheck. He scored 6 goals, and is #2 in his class in assists with 16. This brings him into top 3 in scoring. The other two players at 22 points are two Battleborn rookies, forwards Alexis Vermette and Chad Danger. Both scored short under 10 goals, and therefore assisted well over 10 goals to sum it up to 22 each. The next expansion team players follows in Zdenko Beranek, the first player from Quebec City in the list. He is only 1 point behind the other 3 mentioned ones. Similar to Withecheck he only scored 6 goals, but made up with 15 assists to that. The Kelowna rookie Kynwyl Pearce shares a place with Citadelle youngster Tres Sombreros, both at 20 points scored. The one scored 9 goals and assisted 11, the other scored the other way around and netted 11 pucks and assisted 9. The second defense player in the top 10 is another expansion rookie. Sachimo Zoidberg III managed to score 19 points for Nevada, tied with forward Grape Fruit who did the same for the Carolina Kraken.
Of course there are many statistics other than scoring, but this article already got this long and I want to finish writing already. When looking at the data I collected, some odd values pop out though I still want to mention. For example the penalties in minutes from Boris Petrov, who somehow managed to get 211 penatly minutes. The second player in this category is Bud Weiser with 51, which is still quite much. Boris Petrov also pops out when it comes to fighting. This for sure correlates with the penalty minutes statistics. Boris Petrov had 15 fights over the whole season, of which he won 9. The second player in this category is Grandmaster Funk with 5 fights. Seems like we have a really aggressive rookie here. That’s not all of the interesting statistics Boris Petrov accomplished. He is by far leading the Hits category among rookies. But not only among rookies, among the whole leage – and that by far. He recorded 326 hits, the second highest in hits of the rookie class is Vili Alfalva with 101. He is the only other player in this class to have over 100 hits. The second player league wide in hits is Juni Panda with 242, which is also far behind Boris Petrov. In fact, the third player in this metrics is already over 100 hits behind him.
Alright, this is the last paragraph of my first article. I hope you liked reading it all, if I find time and motivation I may present some more data I collected and evaluated, this is it for now. I enjoyed writing this piece of media, and hope to find some more time to let another article follow. Somehow I doubt it though. Maybe you see something again next season, when I will take another look at all the data and statistics of a regular season. Please grade this article x2, as this is my first media in this league.
