St. Louis Scarecrows Player Draft Prep for the S34 SHL Draft.

With the best time of the year rapidly approaching, the SHL Draft, I decided that I should do my players a service and inform the General Managers of the SHL of the incredible talent that’s in St. Louis. I’ve worked with all of these players firsthand, and most of them truly deserve a shot in the SHL. It’s always worth it to take a flyer on a player, as St. Louis bring to mind our own Charles Walker and Crossfit Jesus. In their rookie seasons, they started off slowly and both players eventually went inactive for a bit. Buffalo and Manhattan took a chance anyway, and they were rewarded when both players came back with a vengeance.

With that in mind, this year’s draft has over 30 eligible prospects. Because of the rebuilding and aggressive free agent signings this past season, the Scarecrows boast having TEN (10) of the eligible prospects for this year’s draft. Since we were busy once again missing the playoffs (a feat that will surely not be replicated this upcoming season), people may have forgotten about us, or overlooked our players. Here’s how our boys shape up as of right now.

Drafted Players:

Round 1, Pick 1 – Jimmy Wagner, Goaltender (<a href='index.php?showuser=803' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-65'>Mr. Deplorable</a> )

Stats: 44 GP, 16-21-6, 87.8% Save Percentage, 2.87 Goals Against Average, 2 Shutouts

TPE: 246

The Skinny: Wagner didn’t have the start to his junior career that he wanted, but rookie goaltenders rarely fare well in year one, especially on a team that is very young and growing. But looking past the numbers, Wagner is a future stud in the league. He’s been dedicated to the team, he’s active in the locker room, and he’s already made players that were Hall of Famers, so he knows what he’s doing. On top of it all, there are only 3 goaltenders available in this draft and one of them has recently told the league that they shouldn’t bother drafting him, as he’s not willing to put in the work to be an SHLer. This causes Wagner to be even more valuable.

Round 2, Pick 9 – Brett Kennedy, Center (<a href='index.php?showuser=2532' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>TheRealBK</a>)

Stats: 50 GP, 3-6-9, 111 Hits

TPE: 276

The Skinny: I know what you’re thinking. “You only got NINE points out of your 9th overall
pick?”. Yeah we did, and that’s okay. Brett Kennedy’s main focus isn’t scoring goals. It’s about being a leader on the ice and in the locker room. He’s created multiple conversations in the locker room and even ran a team bonding computer game for a while until the file corrupted, because machines. On the ice, Kennedy hits people. Hard. He amassed 111 hits in his rookie season, which was good for 6th in the league, tops for rookie forwards. What’s even more impressive is that he did it averaging only 13 minutes a game. Some players look at the P/20 stat to determine how they’re playing. Kennedy uses an H/20 stat, which shows he averages 3.5 Hits per 20 minutes played. He’s the quintessential teammate, and relishes in doing the dirty work, being tough defensively, and winning faceoffs. He’s a winning solution to any team’s Penalty Kill woes.

Round 2, Pick 13 – Alex Andreoff, Right Wing (<a href='index.php?showuser=2213' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Ultra</a>)

Stats: 50 GP, 5-7-12 PTS

TPE: 191

The Skinny: Fuck this guy. After having an awesome conversation with him on draft night where he was so committed to having a good player in the SHL, and basically convincing me to draft him over my original target, he ghosted the day after the draft and hasn’t been seen since. It was so bizarre that I really hope something terrible didn’t happen to him. Or maybe he just decided it’d be fun to blow up someone’s draft plans. Either way, he’s left me with a decent inactive to use for a few seasons.

Round 3, Pick 18 – Hermanis Villy, Defenseman (<a href='index.php?showuser=829' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Skipper</a>)

Stats: 50 GP, 2-13-15, 81 Hits, 49 Shot Blocks

TPE: 240

The Skinny: Fuck the haters. Villy was widely regarded as a “terrible” pick by a lot of draft prognosticators, and he’s done nothing but prove them wrong time and time again. An unfortunate computer issue caused a surge of inactivity before the draft, but since then he’s been active and consistently updating into a good defensive prospect. He’s not the loudest guy in the locker room, but I attribute that to the whole “being from another country” thing, and he’s never been anything but positive when he has come around. He’s an absolute solid defenseman who could easily be an integral part of any team’s future.

Round 3, Pick 22 – Niklas Zetterberg, Left Wing (<a href='index.php?showuser=2534' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Lavelios</a>)

Stats: 50 GP, 7-7-14 PTS

TPE: 164 (182 if you include his 18 Banked TPE)

The Skinny: Try as we might, we could never really get Lavelios on the right path with updating and it eventually just turned into him losing interest and going inactive. It’s a shame, since his player build was moderately successful with getting only 10 minutes a game and playing with lower TPE players. Another inactive in the STL fold I guess.

Round 4, Pick 26 – Stefan Digrio, Left Wing (<a href='index.php?showuser=2540' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>sdigreg617</a>)

Stats: 50 GP, 6-6-12, 64 Hits

TPE: 225

The Skinny: The last pick in the S33 SMJHL Entry Draft, Stefan said one thing right after he was taken: “Honored to be picked. I look forward to contributing, grinding and reminding this team of the good decision they made in picking me.” Needless to say, he’s been doing just that. Once Stefan figure out just how the SHL works (it’s hard at first, I know) he’s been a consistent contributor to the team. He worked hard and played his way all the way up to the second line last season. He’s been gaining his TPE and improving where he can. I know that his real life job can keep away from his player sometimes, but he’s still, even now, updating his guy. Everyone wrote him off from the get go, and instead he’s making a good player at a steady pace. He’s been active in the locker room, stopping by to chat every couple of days. I’ve talked to him personally about the site, and his build, and I’m excited to see what he does next season. He might take a little longer to develop into an SHL player, but he’s absolutely worth a pick.

The one good thing about rebuilding is that there’s always room for new players to join, even after the draft. I want a roster full of actives from top to bottom, so I was a bit aggressive in trying to get as many guys signed as I could. Much like the draft, it’s a crapshoot at what you’re going to get sometimes, but with free agents you only have a limited amount of time to really get to know them. That makes it more of a guessing game since it’s hard to truly determine someone’s dedication to the SHL in the first 24 hours. Sure there are some exceptions, but there always are. With that, here are the free agent SHL Draft Prospects we signed last year.

First Signing – Ryan Todd, Center
(<a href='index.php?showuser=2551' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Caniac36</a>)

Stats: 44 GP, 4-3-7, 7 Hits, 8.89% SHT PCT.

TPE: 180

The Skinny: Todd scored in his first SMJHL game for St. Louis, but things didn’t go quite as planned from there. He wasn’t quite gaining the TPE you’d have hoped for from a hot free agent signing, and he was bounced around the lineup for a bit. He started turning it up later in the season, but it didn’t quite work out the way he had wanted. He comes and goes around the locker room, but doesn’t light up conversation. I know that he’s a younger kid in school, and that takes up most of his time. When we last spoke he said he’ll be more into the SHL as his school load eases up, and in the summer obviously. Still worth a flier if you have the cap space.

Second signing – Cameron Dubois, Defenseman (<a href='index.php?showuser=2012' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Jepox</a>)

Stats: 38 GP, 3-9-12, 6.98% SHT PCT, 26 SB

TPE: 210

The Skinny: We targeted Dubois as soon as we saw he was a free agent. We had (have) a need at defense, and we were looking to sign him and Ellie Werenski (who chose evil Kelowna) to completely shore up our defense and really start the foundation of the Scarecrows Defense for the next few seasons. Dubois joined and he was a pleasure to talk to. We had some really good conversations about not just the SMJHL, but life, and Jepox is a delight to have in the locker room. We also found out that he lives close to some other Scarecrows, so common unity was found quickly. On the ice, he struggled to get going, points wise, for a little bit, but once he did, he closed the season out nicely. I believe he’s already signed to play for the United Kingdom in this year’s IIHF tournament and he’s well on his way to becoming a great defenseman. I added his 6.98% shooting percentage because I’d say he was a bit snake bitten in his 38 games, and when he gets up to a more realistic number, you can expect good things from him.

Third signing – Matthew Auston, Center (<a href='index.php?showuser=2548' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Dweaves08</a>)

Stats: 38 GP, 7-5-12, 0.69 P/20, 9 minutes per game average

TPE: 208

The Skinny: You know that guy every GM looks for in a draft that they really hope is the “diamond in the rough”? The late round, Stefan Digrio-like steal that just makes everyone else feel craptacular for passing him over? Meet Matthew Auston. We signed him the same day as Dubois, and he’s been great ever since. He consistently updates, which is fantastic, and his player produced in very limited minutes (hence the 0.69 P/20). What’s more, he comes from the Chris Crutchfield school of hockey, and he’s had personal interactions with Crutch. Having a mentor that’s an SHL stud/handsome devil is never a bad thing. And if there was any concerns over his longevity, I can tell you that not only is he currently working on a big article to get his bank account up, He’s also one of the newest SHL power couples as his girlfriend, Sophia Bennett, has recently declared her eligibility for the S34 SMJHL Entry Draft. We all know how important friends are to keeping interest in the site. Auston looks to have a much more important role on the Scarecrows this season and beyond.

Fourth signing – Riley Jako, Right Wing (<a href='index.php?showuser=2557' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Zalko</a>)

Stats: 20 GP, 2-4-6, 6.67% SHT PCT

TPE: 186

The Skinny: If Matthew Auston is the diamond in the rough, Riley Jako is the Ruby in the rocks. Is that a thing? It is now. Anyway, Jako was our last Free Agent signing, getting him in right before the deadline where he’d end up having to go into this year’s draft. And boy did we get lucky! He came right into the Locker Room and really started making friends right away. He assimilated into the St. Louis culture right away, and in my own conversations with him, I’ve found him to be nothing but a great person. He’ll never be a locker room menace for sure. In terms of his player, Jako has sought out advice on his player, and is looking to train the best he can. While he doesn’t have a TON of TPE, a lot of that can be contributed to his military obligations which had taken him away from a computer for a time. Unfortunate, but he’s back, and he’s working on an article to get himself some sweet, sweet cash now that his life is a bit more stable. At least that’s how I interpreted it. Either way, Jako got a late start to his career, and now he’s going to take the SMJHL by storm. Don’t be afraid to use a pick on him either.

And there you have it folks. There are the 10 draft eligible St. Louis Scarecrows entering the S34 SHL Draft on April 2nd. Hopefully the general managers that have started scouting read this and learn a thing or two about some pretty awesome prospects that are coming out of St. Louis. Taking a chance on any of these players would absolutely be highly recommended. Thanks for reading!

I can assure that Ryan Todd will become the next Sebastian Aho when he has more time on his hands. He's my sleeper pick in the draft.
