SHL S57 Awards Hype
Ron Mexico and Ryan Jesster

In preperation of the upcoming awards show we wanted to take some time to highlight each awards and the beautiful players that have been nominated for each one. In this article we will look at the Ron Mexico award and the Ryan Jesster Award. The Ron Mexico is awarded to the MVP of the regular season as deemed by the awards committee. This is arguably one of, if not the most, prestigious awards in the SHL that only the truly elite are in the discussion for each season. The Ryan Jesster is award to the top rookie as deemed by the awards committee. Each season new talent pours in to the SHL and this award is presented to highlight some of the tremendous talent. There is not set schedule for these articles, but they will role out in the following groups. I'll update/create the links as we go.

Note: the number in brackets beside each name is the number of nominations they received by the committee during the nomination phase. 9 nominations means they were unanimously nominated, which means all 9 members of the committee believe that nominee deserves to be in the discussion for the award. The voting phase however will decide the ultimate winner.

Ron Mexico
This award should go to the player deemed to be the most impactful in the league in a given season. Extreme performances beyond that of other players in the league are important to consider while team success can also be a factor here. All aspects of play should be looked at here - not simply points/goals. This is an all-encompassing award. The nominees for this season are...

Jimmy Slothface [9] - The star center of the Los Angeles Panthers was an absolute work horse for a team that found itself in the middle of a tough battle for playoff seeding the western conference. His 33 goals, 54 assists and 87 points ranks him 10th, 2nd and tied for 2nd overall amongst all skaters league wide. He was a force to be reckoned with on the other side of the puck as well racking up 102 hits, 35 takeaways, 34 blocks and collecting a 52 CF%, +6.9 when compared to the team average. What particularly stands out for Slothface is his huge point total, which was 16 points clear of the next player on his team and one of just 3 players on the team to achieve a point per game clip or better. He was a huge piece for a contending LA squad.

Michael Scarn [9] - What's an MVP race without the top point producer in the league? Jokes aside Scarn was an absolute mad man this season collecting 36 goals, 57 assists and 93 points, 5th, 1st and 1st overall league wide. Much like the previously mentioned Slothface he was also a terrific defensive player finishing the season with a ridiculous +54 rating, 129 hits, 36 takeaways, 32 blocks and a sparkling corsi rating of 67.2. The knock here is he's the top producing player on a top team filled with talent, but much like Slothface he's also 16 points clear of the next Steelhawk on the points table. This becomes a battle of most valuable versus most valuable to his team in this writers opinion, unless our last nominee has something to say about it.

FR Finn Rhys [5] - The 3rd and final nominee for regular season MVP is an intriguing one because it's the first time in a long time we've seen a player like this nominated for the award. And by a player like this I mean a defenseman. Not since S51 have we seen a defenseman nominated for this award and coincidentally it was also a Blizzard defenseman, Tor Tuck. This year though it's the rising star FR Finn Rhys who shattered personal bests and was a huge reason the Edmonton Blizzard finished on the top of the pile in the west. FR finished the season with 15 goals, 46 assists and 61 points, 6th, 1st and tied for 1st among all defenders in S57. His +43 rating, 121 hits, 36 takeaways, 191 shot blocks and 64 CF% are all positively glowing. He adds a wrinkle to the battle between Scarn and Slothface as it's always interesting to see how voters value blue line contribution over forwards. It should be an exciting 3 way race!

Other players that received nominations are Julio Tokolosh [3], Strom Chamberlain [2] and Martjin Westbroek [1].

Ryan Jesster
This award goes to the league's top rookie. Extreme performances beyond that of other rookies in the league are important to consider while team success can also be a factor here. All aspects of play should be looked at here - not simply points/goals. This is an all-encompassing award. The nominees for this season are...

Rotticus Scott [9] - Leading all rookies in scoring is no easy task, but Rotticus did that and then some racking up huge totals in all offensive categories including 25 goals, 34 assists and 59 points, just short of a point per game clip. On the other side of the puck he was quite responsible as well finishing the season with a +23 rating, 101 hits, 35 blocks and a corsi rating of 65.5. While you could argue that being on a top tier team like the Steelhawks helps fluff those point totals, there is no denying this kid can play and is more than deserving on a nomination. Rotticus Scott has arrived and the league has taken notice.

Thor Odinson [8] - From the offensive zone all the way to between the pipes our next nominee is the starting goaltender for the Seattle Argonauts, Thor Odinson. Finishing the regular season with a 17-36-1 record isn't earth shattering, but that is more reflective of the young and upcoming team he's on and less so of himself. Rather his 0.916 save percentage and 74 game rating while getting shelled for 1952 shots against, the 4th highest total in the league, is indicative that this young man is ready for the hardships as a starter in the SHL and will be a key piece for the Argonauts moving forward.

Jean-Uhtred Ragnarsson-Tr [8] - The young Sydnicate center who the committee, and I imagine most of the SHL, simply call JURT was an absolute force in his rookie season for Chicago. Finishing the season with 10 goals, 33 assists and 43 points he does fall quite a bit short of the previously mentioned Mr. Scott, but what he lacks in points he makes up for in responsibility. His +33 rating, 17 takeaways and -9 takeaway to giveaway ratio are all superior to Scott and he didn't play a lick of powerplay time. Regardless of who wins all of these young men have established themselves as players to watch for in the near future.

Other players that received nominations are Name Redacted [3], Cale Amundsen [2], Kyle Sutton [1] and Axel Foley [1].
