(GRADED)Deep Dive #1 - A Look Into The Top Pick's Debut

Alright since this user encouraged me to do a Deep Dive, I figure I should do a supremely too deep of a dive into their first 4 games, in about 500 words.

Demir Bellona, the 1st overall pick in the S74 SMJHL Draft, has played 4 games so far this season. Sitting at 5 ft 11 and a whopping 185lbs, this Right Defender has the opportunity to be a top player at either end of the ice.

To start their campaign, they gathered 3 assists. All 3 at even strength, although they have had nearly 2 minutes of powerplay opportunity per game thus far. They also help out on the penalty kill, although only for about half a minute per game.

They have racked up a +5 rating so far this season, which indicates that they have been driving play, at even strength at least, and having their unit score more goals than their opponent.

They have not yet potted a goal on 5 shots. This is to be expected from a young player getting used to established goaltenders, but expect them to hit the scoreboard eventually, especially as a threat on the powerplay.

They have not registered a giveaway yet, and have taken the puck directly away from an opponent 3 times so far. Driving turnovers like this while maintaining responsibility themselves will help drive a good performance at both ends of the ice.

They have won both of their 2 faceoff opportunities so far, which is strange to say for a defender, but Quebec can be confident in their ability to have no eligible forwards on the ice, should the need arise.

They have blocked 3 shots so far, indicating they are not afraid to sacrifice the body for the team, and are eager to earn the respect of their coach and their teammates.

They have earned a 66 overall rating, caused by a 64 offensive rating and a solid 70 defensive rating. This is a good number for a young player, and we should expect them to grow throughout the season, and stabilize out to a good player with some more experience under their belt.

For the advanced stats, their unit has shot the puck more often than their opponents, and accounting for blocks and missed shots, are coming out even compared to their opponents. Although we can see that this can be accounted for by taking shots that are easily blocked, as they have not been able to outchance their opponents ignoring blocks, although this early in a career, being this close is impressive.

So far Bellona has gotten to showcase their offensive talents at even strength, but look for them to take their game to the next level and begin to top the scales away from being even, and towards taking over the play and driving the puck towards the opponents net. Certainly a good start for Quebec, and for their top pick. Look for both entities to grow significantly over the course of the season, and watch the patterns emerge over a larger sample size!
