The Pre Draft Rankings Part II: Eastern Conference and Conclusion

After we noticed the rise of the Los Angeles Panthers in the first part it’s time to look at the Eastern Conference to see how they will eventually rank when we put all teams together. After the Western Conference was looked at, the standings were as followed:

Los Angeles Panthers - 36/40
Calgary Dragons - 30/40
Edmonton Blizzard 27/40
Seattle Riot - 23/40
Winnipeg Jets - 20/40
Portland Admirals - 17/40
Texas Renegades - 11/40

Now it’s time to see how the Eastern Conference teams compare to the Western ones.

Eastern Conference

Toronto North Stars

The first team we will take a look at is one of the original teams, and probably the most cursed team in the league. Under current management they had a great playoff run, only stopped by a miracle comeback from the New England Wolfpack. With the acquisition of Zalleras Szlerchek this offseason, they became even stronger and hope to have enough firepower to make this their year. Down the middle they have the following players in the line up.

Players

(S28) Kjell Eide - (TPE 484)
(S27) Jimbo Gondoo - (TPE 165)
(S27) Dane Rowe - (TPE 792)
(S26) Sven Karlsson - (TPE 1249)
(S25) Fredrik Zavstrom - (TPE 298)
(S22) Andrey Barbashev - (TPE 1222)
(S19) Zalleras Szlerchek - (TPE 1402)

As you can see it is pretty crowded in the middle with players like Szlerchek (who will likely be playing on the wing though), Barbashev and Karlsson they have three players currently above TPE, so even with regression it would take quite a while before Xander Green would be able to make an impact here. When you also compare the TPE difference of Rowe and Eide, it is still quite a way to go for Green to even pass these. That will likely be the main reason for Toronto to not being an option at this time.

Prospects

Things get worse as you look at their prospects, because just last year they have acquired another center in the draft in Fletcher Carric.

(S33) Fletcher Carric - (TPE 390)
Carric is currently about 100 TPE ahead and with only being a season younger, it will be hard for Green to actually surpass him if he remains active. With equal activity the both would battle their entire careers for the first spot to open up in the first team of the North Stars.

Logo / Teamname I was never a big fan of Toronto due to the Maple Leafs, but after spending eight seasons with the Toronto Legion in the VHL, I have learned not to hold the Leafs against the other teams and I have learned to accept it. While it will never be my favorite franchise, it is one I respect due to it's long history of failing. Cursebreaking with them would actually be fun and this is why I would rank em higher on this point.

Management Once again I can't really go into the management as it are two persons I have never really been in touch with. Another average grade just for this, but this won't be the part to hurt their rankings, seeing how there are so little GM's I actually have spoken to or recognize.

West Kendall Platoon

On to the West Kendall Platoon, or the team that wrote a lot of pony stories because my old players contract demanded so. I have always liked West Kendall since the moment I got there. Personally I wanted to play with Syckez at that time, as I found him a nice guy to have around in the league, but it wasn't long after me signing there that this Pushkin cat took over as puppetmaster (yes we all know he is the one controlling Bojo) and it was actually a great choice. I loved my time there and the only reason I quit was because my player regressed into oblivion since they just switched to a new update scale. West Kendall was great but we never won a cup in that period, it is something that one day I hope to bring them.

Players

When looking at the centers on their current roster it looks like sunshine on a cloudy day for Green. The only real center they have at the moment is Slappy McDoodle, and why Slappy is still insanely good for the Platoon, he is in his regression and will have to start fighting it sooner then later.

(S23) - Slappy McDoodle - (TPE 1644)

With Slappy being the sole center of the team you would expect that there are a lot of opportunities for Xander Green, but their prospect pool decides differently.

Prospects

(S33) Asvard Lyszczarczyk - (TPE 264)
(S33) Harper Wright - (TPE 362)
(S31) Travis Jeziak - (TPE 455)

As you can see they have just picked up two centers in last seasons draft. Asvard Lyszcarzyk might already been passed by Xander, but Harper Wright is still a different story. The agent also has a history with West Kendall and if he sets his shoulders under it, this could be a player hard to pass for Green during his career. The real bump on the road however will be Travis Jeziak, who will make the jump to the main team next season after spending a few years in juniors. Jeziaks lead on Green is so big that it will hard to pass him, and with only three years difference between them, it will also be a long time before regression gets the best of him. As good as it looked with just looking the main roster, the prospects make a difference here

Logo / Teamname I like the logo and the history, it was part of the reason I wanted to keep the Platoon in West Kendall when there were talks of moving the franchise. Why my contract clause would easily be broken if they really wanted to move it (no player is bigger than his team right), I felt like it helpt them in their fight of keeping the team. As the team never wanted to move, but it was more the rest of the league that wanted to get that part done. I still believe the Platoon is a franchise that needs to keep his identity and hopefully they can return to their former glory and actually win cups instead of having first round playoff exits.

Management What is not to like about West Kendalls management, they are people I get along with and am happy to have been able to stay in their locker room during my time of inactivity, i regularly popped up to asked if they won a cup yet and then dissapeared for a few months. I respect West Kendall very much and even though I know I'm not even their top prospect for this draft (which is logical if you know the reason behind their current target), I respect them very much and this will be one of the reasons this management team will also get the full mark on this point. It's just a shame that the prospect pool isn't in Greens favor, or this could have been a real challenger for the current leaders in the standing.

Buffalo Stampede

The next team we look at is a team that has been heavily in the news the last days. Asking people how much money they want to earn is illegal (even though it is a valid question ) so there are heavy complaints from both sides about the current punishments. While I do not want to pick sides, I do agree with the fact that tampering as a whole is stupid. In the end people will sign where they want anyway and I don't think tampering will actually change much in their decision making. So it is a shame that franchises are being put in a bad light, as I feel tampering does not change a damn thing, so might as well just make it legal.

But enough about that lets look at their current lineup at Center:

Players

(S30) Steven Stamkos Jr. - (TPE 797)
(S29) Nicholas Winter - (TPE 949)
(S28) Steve Butabi - (TPE 155)
(S27) Dickie Pecker - (TPE 703)
(S23) Nazar Nichuskin - (TPE 458)

As you can see, the main centers for this franchise are already set in stone. Stamkos Jr and Winter are both not that old yet and years away from regression. For a team that made the playoffs for the first time, it is quite surprising to see they actually look good in their top 6 for years to come. Despite Winter missing for half a season, they are set in stone for a while. During the suspension there still wouldn't be much of a use for Xander as he would play his first season after being drafted for the Firebirds. There is not much yet which he can do at the SHL level, as both Dickie Pecker and Nazar Nichuskin would still be above him on the depth chart.

Prospects

When looking at the depth chart, you find another guy that would be a constant pest for Green's career. Vorkämpfer is a season older and has about as much TPE as one can find over the course of that season. It almost looks impossible to get past that.

(S33) Viktor Vorkämpfer - (TPE 489)

It is not sure if Vorkämpfer will fill in the whole in the line up already or stay down for another year trying to win it all with St. Louis, but he will be a force to be reckoned with for the Stampede.

Logo / Teamname While it is not the same franchise, I once was the first ever draft pick from Buffalo in the SHL. Jesster picked me in the first round of the draft with the Buffalo Thunder, before he went back to the Calgary Dragons and the franchise was changed into the Hartford Hydras (damn I loved our fluor green colors). Having never played a game for Buffalo it would only feel right to suit up for this franchise. The Stampede are a whole different franchise, but due to the past I feel I have connections to the city and that would make Buffalo a great place for me to play at and one of my favorites before I went on my research for this article.

Management I also did not know the management for this team, but since my re-entry in the SHL I have been in contact with Tomen a lot and I have grown to like him. His dedication to the league is enormous and I feel that he enjoys what he does. I believe he will make a great GM one day and that he could actually do it already. Not sure about Walrus, but the Walrus and the Bucket are one of my favourite meme's. Always when I see his username I have to think off this. And even though he has not asked me yet how much money I want to earn, I have the feeling we actually could get along.

Hamilton Steelhawks

Then we end up at another old team of mine, one where I happily played together with my wife in the past. We had good memories there and it was a fun team to be a part of. But times change and even though I still like the look of the franchise (might be one of the few that can appreciate the current logo), I still feel I would not want to throw away the feeling I once had with the franchise. If you look at the players they have, I might not have to worry about this anyway.

Players

(S31) Martin Svensson - (TPE 542)
(S32) Ronnie Westbrook - (TPE 670)
(S30) Jon Ross - (TPE 805)
(S26) Niall Brannan - (TPE 227)
(S21) Patrik Satan - (TPE 725)
(S20) Franklin Rey - (TPE 510)
(S18) Miles Berger - (TPE 618)

While their centers are not the highest amount of TPE numbers, the younger ones (from Jon Ross to Ronnie Westbrook) are miles ahead of Xander Green at the moment and also years away from losing points. The Hamilton Steelhawks definitely look on the safe side here. After talking to one of their members they are looking for wingers more than centers, so it is not likely that they would be selecting me anyway.

Prospects

Also their prospect pool looks like they should have an advantage over me, but Sirius has been overtaken and Light Jr actually seems inactive. So while I would be the first one to make the jump, it still wouldn't be in a great position seeing the depth at the Steelhawks, but a couple of bonus points for atleast being the top center in their system.

(S33) Sami Sirius - (TPE 261)
(S33) Smirnov Light Jr - (TPE 309 )

Logo / Teamname The logo and teamname I really like, also because of my history there. I played there when Schultzy had already retired his first player and created the defenseman, my wife was the first defensive partner of kit in the SHL, so lots of nice memories. Also memories that I would like to keep intact instead of destroying it and that brings me to the next part.

Management

I have nothing personally against their general manager, but when looking at his posts on the forums or discord, I just cant help to see him as a less mature version of Kesler. Not sure if anyone here still remembers him, but the guy actually matured past the level of Hallsy at the moment. I have told them that I did not really saw myself playing for him. I respect him for the players he has made and his dedication, but at times I just feel like I am watching a toddler try to have his first typing lessons online. Sorry to JR95, who actually seemed really nice when we first talked, but I just can't give you any points here.

New England Wolfpack

Now we come to the moment that I have looked forward to myself, the New England Wolfpack. A franchise I once created together with Ace, but due to still being new at sim leagues, I felt I wanted to see what other franchises where there (as I been through several changes with that franchise) and I left for Edmonton Blizzard before being able to suit up for New England. Something that I don't regret, as I actually won my only SHL Cup with Edmonton before returning to the Eastern Conference again for another 11 seasons without a cup.

When we look at the New England Wolfpack we see a really stacked team, but they have a lot of wingers actually playing center which makes my analysis actually really good since I can just ignore these like they don't exist.

When we see who they currently have down the middle in their line up there are two players.

Players

(S29) Casper Jakobsson (TPE 660)
(S29) Mikael Talo (TPE 915)

Jakobsson his TPE gaining hasn't been that great for a Season 29 prospect, and while Mikael Talo will be harder to catch, there are still enough opportunities to make an impact for the Wolfpack down the road.

Prospects

And that brings us to the end of the prospect list for New England, there are exactly zero centers in their prospect pool. While I would have a few years of development to go, this is a great scenario for me to land in, as I know that down the road I will be able to make an impact for this franchise.

Logo / Teamname The story of the logo is a wonderfull one, as we actually outlived the brand that used the original logo. The logo was one of a street team of a band I was in contact with, the logo was owned by their manager at that point and after a hostile break up, the streetteam (including their logo) was disbanded. While we got permission to use the logo during brighter days, it is fun that we already are a few years older then the streetteam ever was. As I'm the reason we even have this logo (and a few edits here and there by Wasty) I really look forward to finally suit up. And even my nickname and players name would fit the Pack nicely.

Management While Eggy failed the first test and waited weeks to answer my PM when I asked him where the logo originated from:

" So I know it's a military logo of some kind but I don't remember exactly. I believe the original was red rather than green, right? With a lightning bolt? Someone posted it in a thread where people were complaining about the Admirals logo lol."

Well, since I just posted the story, you were pretty far off. It was never red, but used to be purely grey, it was not military but music, the lightning bolts were an actual part of it if i remember correctly, but thanks for giving me a great chuckle. Over the past days I've been talking to Eggy a lot and actually having fun when we are discussing the draft. I feel I would feel right at home here. Even before creating a player, Eggy used to reference me a lot (probably due to the pony signature my wife made) whenever I visited the board and posted. So it's been nice actually meeting this time around.

Points:
Players: 10/10
Prospects: 10/10
Logo / Teamname: 15/10
Management: 10/10

Manhattan Rage

Another franchise I have a history at is the Manhattan Rage, but also another franchise where I felt short of winning a cup after my one year at Edmonton. The two years I had at Manhattan were fun, and I loved my icebear signature I made, but just like the Steelhawks, I don't really want to hurt the history I have with them.

Players

(S30) Nucky Toohoots - (TPE 500)
(S29) Maximus Sarone - (TPE 615)
(S22) Kian Hamilton - (TPE 1328)

When looking at their players, they have a few with still a lead on Green, and while they would be passible as the Season 29/30 guys havent been that active, it is still a block on the short term road. Hamilton will regress eventually, so while there is a future for Green, he still isn't that convinced.

Prospects

Well, he would definitely be the top center in the system, but in order to enjoy that part, the management part must be something to enjoy, or it will be hard of actually getting through the development years.

Logo / Teamname I love their logo and teamname, always have, so I can't really dock them for that. The bear is great and it always has been one of my favourite logo's in this league

Management Who would have thought that after Hallsy his score, there was an actually lower score available. As I gave NEW bonus points for the logo / teamname, I will deduct Manhattan for their management. I believe Chris could be an actually nice person in real life, but with how he acts around the league it is a world of difference. I do not want to be constantly reminded of his balls. Enjoy the -5 points in this ranking Chris, again it's nothing personal, but keep your balls to yourself and do not bother the league with the childish behaviour.

Points:
Players: 8/10
Prospects: 8/10
Logo / Teamname: 10/10

Minnesota Chiefs

The last of the mohicans, the last team I need to cover. While I'm running out of things to say I can't finish the article without having covered them. But i'll keep it short.

Players

(S32) Samee Iqbal - (TPE 599)
(S32) Derrick Glover - (TPE 517)
(S31) Viktor Nerokov - (TPE 230)
(S30) Kari Birkeland - (TPE 175)
(S27) Eugene Feist - (TPE 470)

Playerwise it is mostly the Season 32 prospects to worry about, and both have a fair lead over Green due to the 2 seasons difference. It will be hard to get a top 6 spot here.

Prospects

Prospect wise, it's ideal there are no other centers as they had just called up their first line center in Iqbal this season. I could get a few seasons in the minors here until I am ready (hopefully) to push Glover down to the third line.

Logo / Teamname Never been a really big fan of indian based logo's (and that's including the logo of my wife's favorite soccer team hehe) so I don't really like the logo. The history they have in the SHL is actually good though, so they will still score some points for that.

Management I know their players and their fantasy value, but never really spoke to them in person, so giving them the standard 6 points to round out this analysis.

Points:
Players: 6/10
Prospects: 10/10
Logo / Teamname: 4/10
Management: 6/10
Total: 26/40

This brings us to the final standings and as you can see the Western Conference leader lost out to the Eastern Conference leader and that the Western Conference number two lost out to the Eastern Conference number two. Just a shame that my track record in the East is shit though, but time to change that around with Xander Green.

Final standings

New England Wolfpack - 45/40
Los Angeles Panthers - 36/40
West Kendall Platoon - 31/40
Calgary Dragons - 30/40
Buffalo Stampede - 28/40
Edmonton Blizzard 27/40
Minnesota Chiefs 26/40
Seattle Riot - 23/40
Toronto North Stars - 22/40
Manhattan Rage & Hamilton Steelhawks - 21/40
Winnipeg Jets - 20/40
Portland Admirals - 17/40
Texas Renegades - 11/40

As you can see, the Wolfpack comes out on top and it's part of the Unfinished Business I have been talking about. I really want to suit up for them and with this in mind I will try anything to make it happen. So I hope the franchises I spoke will keep their word, as it would be a big waste to toss such a high pick away for a guy that would walk at free agency at the first chance he has. The surprise for me was that Buffalo ranked lower then I expected, but their depth at center with players not even that old, could mean a career in the bottom six, which is not something I build my player around, but it's more for the Brett Kennedy's of our generation. Can't wait till it's actually draft time.

Disclaimer: I will not do sufficient research to make an accurate article, because it's too hard to keep track of that.

I don't really have room to talk, though; I do a similar thing with some of my stuff too. Can take a stupid amount of time and effort to get every last detail narrowed down.
