Deep Dive #1 : Historical Night at Kelowna

I think we all saw the most lopsided game ever in the SMJHL as the Kelowna Knights made history in BC, defeating the Thunder Bay Walleye 18-3. It was not just an historical night for the organization but also for the players as some of them have recorded their career best game.
I felt the game was already over after 2 minutes of the first period. At 1:03 of the first, Rawbie Gardner scored the first goal of the night and then 50 seconds later, Jordan Lafreniere scored on the powerplay as the Knights had a 2 goal lead under 2 minutes. 3 minutes later, Jordan Lafreniere scored his 2nd goal of the night, making a score of 3-0 for Kelowna. Then the magic happened as Mel Guolla, Levi Bedrock and Dirk Dienhart took over the game. What happened next was arguably the most dominating event in hockey history of the SMJHL. Mel Guolla started his scoring frenzy right after the five minute mark, scoring a hat trick in less than two minutes. He was unstoppable finding the net with ease, getting in from the rebounds, and was always set up bick Dick Dienhart. He had the whole game under control and no one could touch him. Then Mel Guolla passed the torch to Levi Bedrock. Levi would score a hat trick in the next 6 minutes, scoring the last two of his goals in 12 seconds! All of his goals were also set up by Dick Dienhart. He finished with 11 shots on goal which was the highest on the team. He didn't give any breathing room to the opposing goalie. By the end of the first period, the score was 11-0. Eleven goals in the first period. That alone could be a highlight recap video on YouTube. You could feel that the game wasn’t just out of reach, it was obliterated. The Knights didn’t just come to play. They came to bury the Walleye. Never say it’s over as in the second period, Thunder Bay tried to get back in the game with two goals from Tom O’Donnell and Leon Dusty, cutting the lead to nine. Unfortunately, Kelowna added two more goals of their own in forty second late in the second, having back their eleven goals lead. Guolla scored his fifth goal of the night and the score was 13-2 after the second period. Is it over yet? Not at all! The onslaught continued in the third period as Erik Johnson netted two goals in thirty-five seconds. Guolla scored his sixth of the game late in the third. The game ended at 18-3, and the Knights closed the night having recorded 68 shots. To me, Dirk Dienhart was the player of the game as he orchestrated a masterpiece of his own. He ended the game with nine assists, setting a new personal and possibly league record for assists in a single game. He was the main factor for the Knights's offense and Guolla had six goals, making perfect passes and perfect play for the team. 509 words ![]() SHL GM SHL GM |
