The Ottawa Highlanders prepared for the playoffs with a series of in-depth film room meetings evaluating their first round opponents, the Detroit Falcons. Most of these meetings were dedicated to identifying Detroit's defensive weaknesses, which was a major part of why the team was able to score as many goals as they did over the course of the series' five games. Florian Ziegler was not paying attention, however. As is usually the case in team meetings, the German defenseman was doing something else. In this case, most of his time was spent setting up a Letterboxd account where he shares his opinions on movies. He was disappointed to learn that not only were his teammates more interested in the upcoming series than they were in discussing film with him, but also that none of them were familiar with French New Wave cinema and were unable to recognize the names Jean-Luc Godard or François Truffaut. Attempts to set up a team viewing of Truffaut's The 400 Blows were quickly rebuffed.
Additionally, Ottawa made sure to prepare for competitive playoff games by increasing the level of cardio work in practice ahead of their first round series. Ziegler was unable to avoid this.
How else would Becky Fromm prepare for playoffs besides squats, spaghetti, and swings. Welcome to Beckys three S’s to SUCCESS.
FIRST - Squats. Look at her butt, it’s massive. You can hear them chanting. How else are you to get that without power squats! Those hip checks hit different from a dump truck.
SECOND - Spaghetti. Carb o loading at its finest. The finest bronze die cut only is acceptable. Made from semolina or 00 flour only. Topped with a fresh marinara. With chunks of tomatoes and drizzles of olive oil from Lebanon. None of that sugar crap.
THIRD - Swings. Everyone needs a way to decompress. And for Becky that is swings. Mostly you will find her reading a book late at night while in a swinging chair. Or taking a nap in a hammock in the shade in the winters. And every now and then, a true kids swing for the giggles.
So the Anchorage Armada had a pretty rough regular season if we are being honest with ourselves, so we had to basically scrap everything we had learned so far and start from scratch. We started rebuilding from the foundation, because it seemed like some youngsters were missing some basic skills in their game, and you just cannot build elite talent on a rotten base. One of these youngsters is unfortunately Gabriel Oliver Koivu, having joined the team midway through the season. So his coach started doing one on one practices, going over all the basics, even down to how to skate properly, and even how to shoot on the net. Gabriel of course had an understanding of how to do these things, but not necessarily the knowledge of how to do it properly. Hopefully, having covered all the basic skills, Gabriel will be able to play at least decently enough so that he is not dragging his team down come game time.
Well first thing we did in Nevada, was we had a big rest day. We had everyone show up at the rink, and we had a big old barbecue. Family, friends, loved ones we didn't care. We just took some time to appreciate all the work we put in this season, and the ones who helped us along the path. The next day was straight to business as usual. Between watching film of our opponent, and our on ice training. We worked hard to try and find the right system we felt would be able to shutdown and attack our opponent. Ultimately, we went into the playoffs with no expectations. It was honestly way easier than playing as a top seed. No one expects you to win so it just feels that much better when you do. We went in with our legs loose, and our motivation to prove everyone wrong was high.
The Thunder Bay Walleye did not prepare for the playoffs because we didn't think we made it in. It was only about two days before the first game when they learned that every team in the SMJHL actually makes the playoffs.
Everyone had already gone their separate ways for the offseason. Some folks were at the beach with their families and some were hitting the golf courses across the world. The front office had to scramble and pull everyone together, booking expensive flights in the middle of the night to get together a practice plan.
The results showed it, with the Walleye getting beat up for the first two games. But then something clicked, everyone had a reset from the regular season and played comfortable hockey back on home ice. By the time the series went back to Great Falls, the Walleye couldn't be beat and flipped the series on its head.
So if you are ever having a losing season, it seems like the best thing to do is take a day off.
